Book Learning Discourses and the Discourses of Learning

Download or read book Learning Discourses and the Discourses of Learning written by Helen Marriott and published by Monash University ePress. This book was released on 2007 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: "Learning Discourses and the Discourses of Learning is an edited collection of papers exploring issues of teaching and learning in academic settings. The key theme of the volume is 'discourses' - especially as these relate to institutional policies, disciplinary practices and students' processes of learning in the academy. Particular attention is paid to the experiences of second-language students studying at Australian universities as well as those learning foreign languages in Australia. Employing a variety of methodologies and theoretical perspectives, the papers in Learning Discourses are unified by a focus on rich and socially situated empirical data. The book addresses issues highly pertinent to the dynamic character of contemporary higher education in Australia, one dominated by trends towards the internationalisation and professionalisation of university programs, and the growing intercultural nature of social and academic interactions. Part one covers issues of discourse and change, exploring processes of discourse acquisition and production in a range of disciplinary contexts, along with the nexus between academic and professional discourses. Part two deals with broader issues of the participation and socialisation of students in second-language-use situations, ranging from macro (social planning and policy) issues to the micro (interpersonal) level. Part three looks at the social mediation of foreign language learning covering a range of tertiary and secondary settings in Australia and has a particular focus on Japanese as a foreign language."--Publisher description.

Book Gender Language and Ideology

Download or read book Gender Language and Ideology written by Momoko Nakamura and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines women’s language as an ideological construct historically created by discourse. The aim is to demonstrate, by delineating a genealogy of Japanese women’s language, that, to deconstruct and denaturalize the relationships between gender and any language, and to account for why and how they are related as they are, we must consider history, discourse and ideology. The book analyzes multiple discourse examples spanning the premodern period of the thirteenth century to the immediate post-WWII years, mostly translated into English for the first time, locating them in political, social and academic developments and describing each historical period in a manner easily accessible for those readers not familiar with Japanese history. This is the first book that describes a comprehensive development of Japanese women’s language and will greatly interest students of Japanese language, gender and language studies, linguistics, anthropology, sociology, and history, as well as women’s studies and sexuality studies.

Book excerpt: KANJI PRACTICE WORKBOOK The Japanese art of writing kanji ((漢字), hiragana, or katakana characters is beautiful and precise. This notebook contains 120 sheets of genkō yōshi paper, also called genkouyoushi or genkoyoshi paper (原稿用紙, manuscript paper). Each sheet has 10 columns of 20 squares to practice Japanese lettering, the most common size. Each large square can hold one Japanese character and is divided into four quadrants to guide the correct positioning of the elements of the character. Between consecutive columns of squares is a blank space used for writing furigana (ruby characters), bōten (a type of punctuation mark used for giving emphasis) or other marks. This paper is useful for children or adults who are learning the Japanese language. It is traditional to write top to bottom, right to left, but some people prefer writing horizontally. Genko yōoshi is widely used. Primary and secondary students in particular are required to hand in assignments written on genkō yōshi, and essays for school entrance examinations are also written on the paper, making knowledge of the correct way to use genkō yōshi essential. The paper helps students to learn correct spacing when writing vertically. It is also the main form of rule used by Taiwanese students when writing Taiwanese Mandarin, where it is called 原稿紙 (pinyin: yungǎo zhǐ). In Taiwan, students use the thin vertical column to transcribe Bopomofo pronunciation. This 8" x 10" book is perfect for anyone who wants to perfect writing. Makes a great birthday or Christmas gift. DETAILS: Dimensions: 8" x 10" 120 cream colored pages Cover design is repeated pattern of Koi Fish Click brand for more Japanese books and gifts.
