Book excerpt: In this 11th installment of the bestselling Shadows in the Water series, Louie Thorne proves she is still the “indelible protagonist” (Kirkus Reviews) readers know and love. The success of Konstantine’s underworld empire is secured by the loyalty of his brother-in-arms, Stefano. But when Stefano’s sister is murdered, and Stefano himself goes missing, Konstantine suspects that a new up-and-coming rival is to blame. And there is no shortage of gangsters vying for Konstantine’s crown. The easiest solution to this threat is to send La Strega. Louie Thorne is the nightmare they fear most and it would be nothing for her to kill anyone who stands in Konstantine’s way. Or it would be nothing, if Louie were not seven months pregnant with their child. To send Louie after Stefano now, in her condition, would be to put both their lives at risk. Will Konstantine abandon his friend in order to keep Louie and the baby safe? Or will he break his promise to Louie—and go after Stefano alone… Praise for Shadows in the Water ★★★★★ “An amazing book with a unique premise!” ★★★★★ “Dark and suspenseful, Shadows in the Water sends tingles down your spine!” ★★★★★ “The main character is a serial killer, but it's cool. Book Andreas Papandreou

Download or read book Andreas Papandreou written by Stan Draenos and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-12 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greece in the 1960s produced one of Europe's arguably most controversial politicians of the post-war era. The contrarian politics of Andreas Papandreou grew out of his conflict laden re-engagement with Greece in the 1960s. Returning to Athens after 20 years in the US where he had been a rising member of the American liberal establishment, Papandreou forged a social reform-oriented, nationalist politics in Greece that ultimately put him at odds with the US foreign policy establishment and made him the primary target of a pro-American military coup in 1967. Venerated by his admirers and despised by his detractors with equal passion, the Harvard-educated Papandreou left in his wake no clear-cut answer to the question of who he was and what he stood for. Andreas Papandreou chronicles the events, struggles and ideas that defined the man's dramatic, intrigue-filled transformation from Kennedy-era modernizer to Cold War maverick. In the process the book examines the explosive interplay of character and circumstance that generated Papandreou's contentious, but powerfully consequential politics.

Book History of the Caucasus

Download or read book History of the Caucasus written by Christoph Baumer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Shadow of Great Powers is the second volume of Christoph Baumer's History of the Caucasus. It covers the period from the Seljuk domination of the Southern Caucasus around 1050 CE to the present day. After the Kingdom of Georgia's golden age of independent power and cultural blossoming in the 12th and early 13th centuries, the Caucasus was overrun by the Mongols and soon disintegrated into innumerable smaller kingdoms, principalities and khanates. At the same time, an Armenian kingdom in exile maintained a precarious independence in Cilicia, today's southern Turkey, by applying a three-way diplomatic policy balanced between the Mongol Il-Khanate, the Crusader states and, to a lesser degree, the Mameluke Empire. Then followed four centuries during which the highly fragmented polities of the North and South Caucasus became political pawns of the regional great powers, above all the Ottomans, Iran and Russia. In the wake of World War I the South Caucasus enjoyed a short-lived independence whereas its northern neighbours were engulfed by the Russian civil wars. But by 1921 the Soviet Union had re-established Russian dominance over the whole region and, from a Western perspective, the region 'disappeared' behind the Iron Curtain. Nevertheless, the Caucasian nations kept their pronounced identities even under Soviet rule, giving rise at the dissolution of the Soviet Union to a number of internecine conflicts. Whereas the Russian Federation managed to maintain its supremacy over the North Caucasus – albeit at the cost of bloody wars and insurrections – Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia succeeded in more or less gaining control over their destiny. Of these three republics, only Azerbaijan secured a wide-ranging independence thanks to its fossil fuel resources. Following Russian interference, Georgia lost control over two of its provinces while Armenia remains dependent on Russian support in the face of its notoriously antagonistic relations with neighbouring Azerbaijan and Turkey over the unresolved issue of Karabakh. In the Shadow of Great Powers includes some 200 full-colour images and maps which further bring the turbulent history of this region to light.

Book Be Grateful Brighton College s Fallen 1939 45

Download or read book Be Grateful Brighton College s Fallen 1939 45 written by David Turner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A roll-call and history of the ex-students of Brighton College who fell in the Second World War. Eighty years on from the beginning of the Second World War it is easy to forget that, for a time, democracy, the rule of law and even everyday values of tolerance and kindness were in danger of being snuffed out in Europe. Given the sacrifices made, we must not forget the people who fought to protect these virtues – particularly those who laid down their lives for this cause. To this end, all Fourth Form pupils at Brighton College have researched an individual Old Brightonian who died in, or as a result of, the war. The list includes former masters, pupils and one German old boy who was doubtless a good man, but fighting for a bad cause. What emerges in this book, a companion to a volume on the fallen of the Great War already published, is a collection of extremely varied personal histories. Where possible, this book recalls the family lives of each man in addition to his war service. The quality of research has been high, and pupils have also excelled at storytelling: finding the excitement and humour in each life, as well as the poignancy. The 170 fallen Old Brightonians of the Second World War, nurtured by the College but cut off in their prime, have been honoured by the current crop of Brightonians, several generations below them.
