Book excerpt: Within the framework of so-called second generation expert systems [62] knowledge modeling is one of the most important aspects. On the one hand, knowledge acquisition is no longer seen as a knowledge transfer process, rather it is now considered as model construction process which is typically a cyclic and error prone process. On the other hand, the distinction between knowledge and symbol level descriptions [166] resulted in various proposals for conceptual knowledge models describing knowledge in an implementation independent way. One of the most prominent examples of such a conceptual model is the KADS model of expertise which is characterized by its clear distinction of different know ledge types and by the usage of specific modeling primitives to describe these different knowledge types [185]. The semi formal KADS expertise model entails all the advantages and disadvantages which have been identified for semi-formal system models e.g. in the software engineering community.

However, several main themes run through the papers. First, the issues of integrating knowledge from different sources and K.A. tools is a salient topic in many papers. A second major topic in the papers is that of knowledge modelling. Research in knowledge-based systems emphasises the use of generic models of reasoning and its underlying knowledge. An important trend in the area of knowledge modelling aims at the formalisation of knowledge models. Where the field of knowledge acquisition was without tools and techniques years ago, now there is a rapidly growing body of techniques and tools. Apart from the integrated workbenches already mentioned above, several papers in this book present new tools. Although knowledge acquisition and machine learning have been considered as separate subfields of AI, there is a tendency for the two fields to come together. This publication combines machine learning techniques with more conventional knowledge elicitation techniques. A framework is presented in which reasoning, problem solving and learning together form a knowledge intensive system that can acquire knowledge from its own experience.

Issues concemed with the eval- tion of judgment in the psychological laboratory are assessed and contrasted with studies of expert judgment in ecologically valid contexts. In addition, issues concerned with eliciting and validating expert knowledge are discussed. Dem- strations of good judgmental performance are linked to situational factors such as feedback cycles, and measurement of coherence and reliability in expert ju- ment is introduced as a baseline determinant of good judgmental performance. Issues concerned with the representation of elicited expert knowledge in kno- edge-based systems are evaluated and methods are described that have been shown to produce improvements in judgmental performance. Behavioral and mathematical ways of combining judgments from multiple experts are compared and contrasted. Finally, the issues developed in the preceding contributions are focused on current controversies in decision support. Expert judgment is utilized as a major input into decision analysis, forecasting with statistical models, and expert s- tems.
