Abstract: Human papillomavirus (HPV), a family of viruses with more than 40 genotypes is known to infect genital tract of males and females. High-risk HPV including genotypes 16, 18 can cause cervical cancer while low-risk HPV including genotypes 6, 11 can cause benign or low grade cervical lesions and genital warts. Considering HPV infection is the most common sexually transmitted infection worldwide, as well as in Macao, with prevalence up to 8.1%, and given that cervical cancer is the top ten most frequent female cancer which causes high burden in our health care system, it is important to have a comprehensive intervention for control HPV and cervical cancer. Since the HPV vaccine for preventing cervical cancer has been available in Macao, it is worth to know the willingness to be vaccinated among target population. Base on findings from previous studies, the parental attitudes and acceptance is the key factor of vaccination for young girls. Other potential factors, such as the HPV knowledge, vaccine safety and efficacy, cost, the age of daughter and the physician's attitudes, may also affect parental acceptance. Given that no previous study on this topic has been conducted, this study is aimed to understand the knowledge, attitudes and acceptability of HPV vaccination, and to explore and identify the affecting factors for acceptance among school girls and their parents. A school-based simple cluster random sampling method was used. Data was collected by anonymous self-administrated questionnaires among 574 school girls aged at 12-22 and 702 parents aged at 30-65. About 47% of the school girls had heard of HPV and 88.3% had heard of HPV vaccine, while 57.1% of parents had heard of HPV and 83.2% had heard of HPV vaccine. Although the HPV-related knowledge was poor among young girls and their parents, 92% of girls indicated a positive intention to be vaccinated for herself and 88% parents would willing to consent daughter to be vaccinated if the HPV vaccine became in routine immunization. However, the parental vaccination acceptability for daughters decreased to 40% and only 30% of mothers would willing to accept for themselves, if they had to pay a full course for three doses of HPV vaccine. About 97% of school girls and 95% of parents supported that HPV vaccine should be included in government immunization programme. We also found that young girls and parents are more favor in later HPV vaccination rather than vaccination at recommended age. Cost is the dominant affecting factor in determining parental acceptability of HPV vaccination. In addition, daughter's age, vaccine safety concern, Pap smear attendance and HPV knowledge are significantly associated with HPV vaccine acceptance. It may be worthwhile to further investigate the reasons for the delay vaccination among the young adolescent girls and among their parents, to examine if any underlying factors were unexpressed. Book excerpt: Background: Cervical cancer is primarily caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and is the second most common cause of cancer-related mortality among women. Purpose: College women may be at risk for contracting HPV based on their sexual behavior. An exploratory analysis was conducted, following the release of the HPV vaccine, Gardasil[R], to (1) determine awareness of HPV and Gardasil[R], (2) assess attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs about the HPV vaccine, and (3) identify information sources that college women are accessing. Methods: A cross-sectional study of college women (n=293) enrolled in a Northeastern university voluntarily completed a self-administered questionnaire regarding knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs about HPV and the HPV vaccine. Statistical analyses include descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlations, and paired sample t-tests. Results: Sexually active respondents would recommend the HPV vaccine to others and disagree that HPV vaccination would encourage risky sexual behavior. Yet, "need more information" is the predominant reason respondents would not get the HPV vaccine if it were offered for free. Discussion: Correlations are identified on how self-reported knowledge influenced attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs regarding the HPV vaccine. Translation to Health Education Practice: These findings should assist health educators in developing integrated public health education efforts for HPV vaccination that are targeted towards this at-risk population. The purpose of this book is to present a concise panorama of the pre sent status of knowledge of this topic. This knowledge is as impor tant to molecular biologists and virologists as it is to clinicians and pathologists. To bridge the gap among these diverse groups of investigators, we conceived of a book covering a broad spectrum of the basic scientific, clinical, and pathological aspects of diseases associated with papillomaviruses. Although the principal thrust of this book is directed at human papillomaviruses, fundamental knowledge of animal viruses is essential to the current understand ing of the molecular mechanisms of cell transformation. For this reason, a chapter on animal viruses has also been included. Some of the experimental work having to do with the elucidation of transformation and other aspects of interaction between the virus and the cell cannot be based on human papillomaviruses because of a lack of suitable experimental models. Hence, some of the chapters dealing with fundamental aspects of viral molecular biol ogy are based on animal models. We were very fortunate in having persuaded a number of distin guished colleagues to contribute to this work.

Book excerpt: Rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have significantly increased in the United States. Per-capita estimates reveal approximately 68 million prevalent and 26 million incident STIs nationally. Gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia—the three reportable STIs—reached levels not seen in the last fifty years and this resurgence is concurrent with increasing antimicrobial resistance and a dearth of viable candidates in the vaccine pipeline. A seminal report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Sexually Transmitted Infections: Adopting a Sexual Health Paradigm, confirms that STIs rank among the most pressing and intractable public health threats. Furthermore, rising rates of STIs exact a substantial societal, medical, and economic burden that strain public health capacity, which has been substantially debilitated in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. STIs can have serious consequences for sexual, reproductive, and overall health. Untreated syphilis, for instance, is directly implicated in neurological, cardiovascular, and dermatological disease. Human papillomavirus is a known cause of cervical cancer and is the most common cancer among women globally. Hepatitis B increases risk for cirrhosis and primary liver cancer. Despite reductions in HIV transmission and improvements in prevention and treatment, infections among women, girls, adolescents, and mother-to-child transmission remain unacceptably high. Marginalized racial/ethnic minorities, LGBTQ persons, vulnerable at-risk adolescents and young adults, and other underrepresented populations are more susceptible to STIs as they negotiate an array of factors that can delay and even preclude access to preventive interventions. The United States spends substantially more on STI prevention and treatment yet it consistently bares a disproportionate burden of sexually transmitted infections compared to other Western industrialized nations. Access to healthcare, erosion and diversion of public health capacity, racism, discrimination, stigma, substandard education, and poverty have all been identified as important contributors to the trajectory of acute sexually transmitted infections. Furthermore, upstream drivers such as national, state, and local public health policies have been associated with population-level STI risk, prevention, and treatment and as such offer opportunities for ecological, observational, and multi-level analyses to assess their direct and indirect impact on sexual health outcomes. In this thematic collection, we aim to present an interdisciplinary collection of high-quality articles centered on the premise that the rise of emerging and re-emerging STIs can be attributed, in part, to a complex interaction of sociomedical factors beyond individual behavioral risk profiles. This Research Topic welcomes a variety of manuscript formats including original research, brief reports, systematic reviews, and perspective manuscripts involving sociomedical factors, social determinants of health, health disparities, infectious disease epidemiology, and other drivers including health policies that act as barriers and facilitators of effective STI prevention and treatment. Manuscripts that examine structural, community, institutional, interpersonal, and broad individual factors linked to STIs are very well suited for this collection. Topic areas include, but are not limited to: • Structural racism, discrimination, and stigma and their influence on prevention, treatment, and support services among vulnerable and marginalized populations; • Housing and income insecurity that impede sexual, reproductive, and overall health; • Biological factors that affect the spread of STIs including their asymptomatic nature and the influence of sex as a biological variable; • Intimate partner violence, harassment, and intimidation; • Substance abuse, sex work, sexual networks, and normative sexual attitudes and beliefs that impede the adoption of preventive health-promoting behaviors; • Priority populations including adolescents, men who have sex with men, youth who are LGBTQ, and the incarcerated; • Impact of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) uptake on STI incidence; • Culturally-specific biopsychosocial, behavioral, and community-based STI interventions to treat and support those afflicted with STIs; • Community mobilization and community-based organization to reduce STIs; • Community-level prevalence of infectious agents; • Local and holistically-integrated STI clinics; • Public health STI workforce capacity; • Health in All Policies (HiAP) approaches to STI prevention and treatment.
