Download or read book I Didn t Think it was a Big Big Problem written by Kristin I. Meyer and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to shed light on the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs Russian and Commonwealth of Independent States-region college students possess about HIV/AIDS and their sources for health information. This qualitative study used two data-collection methods for the purposes of triangulation. These data collection methods included focus groups and in-depth interviews. A total of two gender-specific focus groups and seven in-depth interviews were completed. Research questions for this study probed the specific knowledge students possessed on the causes of HIV/AIDS, transmission routes, symptoms and prevention of infection. Questions also investigated student attitudes toward HIV/AIDS-infected individuals, beliefs about their own risk of infection and preferred sources for HIV/AIDS information in the media. Discussions with participants revealed that Russian and CIS college students possess general knowledge of the disease and prevention methods. However, their perceptions of personal risk are low. Many students still associate the disease with foreigners and marginalized groups such as drug addicts, prostitutes and homosexuals. Consequently, many describe themselves as distant from these groups and therefore protected from infection. Mass media was one source of information used by college students from Russia and CIS nations. However, concerns regarding the credibility of media led many to depend on multiple media channels for information. Other information sources included peers, family and health professionals.

Book A Journey Into the Closet

Download or read book A Journey Into the Closet written by Davita Anne Galloway and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black women are most likely to become infected with HIV/AIDS from engaging, in heterosexual relations with Black men, including "Down Low" (DL) Black men. The purpose of this study was to determine Black women's knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to HIV and the 'DL' phenomenon. Fifty-eight Black, UNC Charlotte undergraduate students completed written surveys based on constructs of the Health Belief Model (HBM). The results indicated that these females anticipate engaging in protective health behaviors, and believe that they are susceptible and threatened by the HIV/AIDS virus and 'DL' phenomenon. In addition, HIV knowledge, perceived susceptibility and perceived threat were the only variables of the HBM that predicted preventive health actions. Overall, results support the need for greater understanding of how Black women are personally affected by both HIV and the 'DL' phenomenon.

Book HIV AIDS and Adolescents

Download or read book HIV AIDS and Adolescents written by Prem Misir and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the relationship between high school students’ HIV and AIDS knowledge and their stigma-related attitudes/perceptions of people living with HIV (PLHIV) in the Caribbean and South Pacific, with a view to designing effective stigma-reduction combined intervention programs. Presenting an international cross-sectional study using a purposive sample of high school students from Fiji (South Pacific), Vanuatu (South Pacific), Guyana, and Antigua & Barbuda (Caribbean) to assess HIV and AIDS knowledge and stigma-related attitudes by gender, age, religion, race/ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, the book shows how stigmatizing attitudes and beliefs negatively impact interventions to prevent and treat HIV and AIDS.
