Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hard work required to make God real, how it changes the people who do it, and why it helps explain the enduring power of faith How do gods and spirits come to feel vividly real to people—as if they were standing right next to them? Humans tend to see supernatural agents everywhere, as the cognitive science of religion has shown. But it isn’t easy to maintain a sense that there are invisible spirits who care about you. In How God Becomes Real, acclaimed anthropologist and scholar of religion T. M. Luhrmann argues that people must work incredibly hard to make gods real and that this effort—by changing the people who do it and giving them the benefits they seek from invisible others—helps to explain the enduring power of faith. Drawing on ethnographic studies of evangelical Christians, pagans, magicians, Zoroastrians, Black Catholics, Santeria initiates, and newly orthodox Jews, Luhrmann notes that none of these people behave as if gods and spirits are simply there. Rather, these worshippers make strenuous efforts to create a world in which invisible others matter and can become intensely present and real. The faithful accomplish this through detailed stories, absorption, the cultivation of inner senses, belief in a porous mind, strong sensory experiences, prayer, and other practices. Along the way, Luhrmann shows why faith is harder than belief, why prayer is a metacognitive activity like therapy, why becoming religious is like getting engrossed in a book, and much more. A fascinating account of why religious practices are more powerful than religious beliefs, How God Becomes Real suggests that faith is resilient not because it provides intuitions about gods and spirits—but because it changes the faithful in profound ways.

Book excerpt: Mankind has many conflicting ideas about what God is really like. God created the whole material universe by His Word, and then the Word of God emptied Himself to become a speck in a tiny part of it. Why? To show people exactly what God would be like if He lived in a limited human body like our own. This also allowed Him to become a perfect Example of how we should live on earth and to pay a just price for the sins of mankind, His creation. This little book provides a foundation for understanding the character and nature of God, showing how God's provision in Jesus is very different from what any religion provides. This difference is vital for preparing us for all eternity. God's way to save us through Jesus helps us to grow in true love and cuts through a deadly self-righteousness that, if God allowed it, would even lower the quality of heaven. This book was first written for people in South Sudan, but can help people anywhere who want to find meaning and purpose for their lives on earth.

Book Knowing God to Make Him Known

Download or read book Knowing God to Make Him Known written by Ed Scheuerman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-04-20 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians are all too familiar with the dichotomy between “being a Mary” (sitting at Jesus’ feet) and “being a Martha” (being active in ministry). We have been told that before we can do, we first need to be. And this is well and good. But it is insufficient. Before we can be, we first need to know. We need to know who God is (God’s attributes) so that we can then be who we are intended to be in Christ. Only then should we seek to do what he has called and equipped us to do for his glory. This book focuses on knowing God, in his many attributes, so that we can become conformed to his image, in order to do what he’s called us to do to bring the gospel to the world.

Bestselling novelist Michelle Ule brings Biddy's story to life as she traces her upbringing in Victorian England to her experiences in a WWI YMCA camp in Egypt. Readers will marvel at this young woman's strength as she returns to post-war Britain a destitute widow with a toddler in tow. Refusing personal payment, Biddy proceeds to publish not just My Utmost for His Highest, but also 29 other books with her husband's name on the covers. All the while she raises a child alone, provides hospitality to a never-ending stream of visitors and missionaries, and nearly loses everything in the London Blitz during WWII. The inspiring story of a devoted woman ahead of her times will quickly become a favorite of those who love true stories of overcoming incredible odds, making a life out of nothing, and serving God's kingdom.

Book excerpt: Scripture reveals a God who meets us where we are, not where we pretend to be. No More Faking Fine is your invitation to get honest with God through the life-giving language of lament. If you've ever been given empty clichés during challenging times, you know how painful it is to be misunderstood by well-meaning people. When life hurts, we often feel pressure--from others and ourselves--to keep it together, suck it up, or pray it away. But Scripture reveals a God who lovingly invites us to give honest voice to our emotions when life hits hard. For most of her life, Esther Fleece Allen believed she could bypass the painful emotions of her broken past by shutting them down altogether. She was known as an achiever and an overcomer on the fast track to success. But in silencing her pain, she robbed herself of the opportunity to be healed. Maybe you've done the same. Esther's journey into healing began when she discovered that God has given us a real-world way to deal with raw emotions and an alternative to the coping mechanisms that end up causing more pain. It's called lament--the gut-level, honest prayer that God never ignores, never silences, and never wastes. No More Faking Fine is your permission to lament, taking you on a journey down the unexpected pathway to true intimacy with God. Drawing from careful biblical study and hard-won insight, Esther reveals how to use God's own language to come closer to him as he leads us through our pain to the light on the other side, teaching you that: We are robbing ourselves of a divine mystery and a divine intimacy when we pretend to have it all together God does not expect us to be perfect; instead, he meets us where we are There is hope beyond your heartache, disappointment, and grief Like Esther, you'll soon find that when one person stops faking fine, it gives everyone else permission to do the same.

Book excerpt: The Christian has been given the great privilege of knowing God through Jesus Christ. While the Bible clearly shows us who God is, what he has done for us, and what he expects from our lives, that knowledge is nothing more than accumulated information unless acted upon. That knowledge must be wrestled out in everyday life as we seek to truly experience God for who the Bible declares him to be and seek to submit ourselves to his ways. In Struggling with God, author pastor Sam Sumner gives all Christians a basic overview of some key beliefs and practices of the Christian faith. Using examples from his own life and scripture, he shows how God patiently perseveres with those who struggle to know him and live in a way that pleases him. Dealing with such deep themes as the trinity, the struggle between good and evil, the redemptive story, the deity of Christ, and even the Holy Spirit, Struggling with God presents a theology for real life.

Book Knowing God for Real

Download or read book Knowing God for Real written by Violet Wallace and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowing God for Real reveals the truth about what it takes to not only be saved, but to be living for the Kingdom. The kingdom represents the mindset and stability of the believer, as we are the kingdom of God (Heb.). This book expounds on such topics as: Taking the Mask off- Too many people are in church under false pretenses, wrong motives but put on the church face and mentality (religiosity) based on what they know. They look clean on the outside but inside they are someone else as stated in Jeremiah "they speak with there mouth but there heart is far from me. We lie to ourselves we lie to others in a nut shell we lie to God. Church Age - The church has become compromised, watered down and a home of fame and entertainment. Holiness is no longer the motto. Instead we seek the hand of God and not his face. Power struggle runs rampant and titles has taken the place of True Anointing. This book deals with the true calling of the church and it's ministry of reconciliation, holiness and sanctification. Destiny Revealed - Many believers walk around blind sighted with no vision and no idea of what God has called them to do. Without a vision the people perish. Believers struggle with finding their rightful place in the kingdom because they do not seek to know what is the good and perfect will of God for our lives. Therefore, we just go to church, but never walk in purpose and destiny. Be Blessed and Enjoy Knowing God For Real
