Book excerpt: It' s the eleventh century and Islam, born from the sands of the Arabian Desert, has spread from Syria to Spain. Muslims now rule a large part of what was once the Roman Empire. Eude de Châtillon, a monk at the monastery of Cluny, France, does not like what he sees. He leads expeditions to free Spain from its Muslim rulers. When he becomes Pope Urban II, he urges good Christians everywhere to free Jerusalem, and so the crusades begin. As pope, however, he is not able to lead the fight, so he gives authority to Peter the Hermit, a popular priest. At Peter's bidding, thousands of peasants join the crusade, which was named "The Popular Crusade." Fierce battles are fought throughout Spain, the Holy Land, and elsewhere as Christians and Muslims compete for power. The repercussions of this historic struggle are still evident today in the continued fighting in the Middle East; Muslim attitudes about the Western world and memories of the September 11 attacks. Knights of the Cross is the complete report of all the Crusades and a must-read for anyone struggling to understand how religious conflicts of the past have shaped the world today.

Book Forged in the Shadow of Mars

Download or read book Forged in the Shadow of Mars written by Peter W. Sposato and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-03-15 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Forged in the Shadow of Mars, Peter W. Sposato traces chivalry's powerful influence on the mentalitè and behavior of a sizeable segment of the elite in late medieval Florence. He finds that the strenuous knights and men-at-arms of the Florentine chivalric elite—a cultural community comprised of men from both traditional and newly emerged elite lineages—embraced a chivalric ideology that was fundamentally martial and violent. Chivalry helped to shape a common identity among these men based on the profession of arms and the ready use of violence against both their peers and those they perceived to be their social inferiors. This violence, often transgressive in nature, was not only crucial to asserting and defending personal, familial, and corporate honor, but was also inherently praiseworthy. In this way, Sposato highlights the sharp differences between chivalry and the more familiar civic ideology of the popolo grasso, the Florentine mercantile and banking elite who came to dominate Florence politically and economically during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. As a result, in Forged in the Shadow of Mars, Sposato challenges the traditional scholarly view of chivalry as foreign to the social and cultural landscape of Florence and contests its reputation as a civilizing force. By reexamining the connection between chivalric literature and actual practice and identity formation among historical knights and men-at-arms, he likewise provides an important corrective to assumptions about the nature of elite violence and identity in medieval Italian cities.

Book excerpt: Two kingdoms, ancient enemies, must stand alone against an implacable invader in the masterful conclusion of the Great God’s War epic from the New York Times bestselling author of the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. They are coming. The kingdoms of Belleger and Amika had been fighting for generations. But then they learned of a terrible threat moving through them to destroy the Last Repository, an immense hidden library. To face this greater enemy, King Bifalt of Belleger and Queen Estie of Amika allied their lands and prepared for war. They are at the door. Now the time of preparation is over. Black ships and sorcery test the cannon that defend the Bay of Lights. Treachery and betrayal threaten the kingdoms. The priests of the Great God Rile sow dissent. And Estie rides for the Last Repository, desperate to enlist the help of their Magisters—and to understand the nature of her own magical gift. They are here. Bifalt hates sorcery as much as he loves Estie, and the discovery that she could become a Magister shatters him. But he must rally and fight. Belleger and Amika are all that stand between the Great God’s forces and his ultimate goal: the destruction of the Last Repository and its treasure of knowledge.
