Book Making England Western

Download or read book Making England Western written by Saree Makdisi and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central argument of Edward Said’s Orientalism is that the relationship between Britain and its colonies was primarily oppositional, based on contrasts between conquest abroad and domestic order at home. Saree Makdisi directly challenges that premise in Making England Western, identifying the convergence between the British Empire’s civilizing mission abroad and a parallel mission within England itself, and pointing to Romanticism as one of the key sites of resistance to the imperial culture in Britain after 1815. Makdisi argues that there existed places and populations in both England and the colonies that were thought of in similar terms—for example, there were sites in England that might as well have been Arabia, and English people to whom the idea of the freeborn Englishman did not extend. The boundaries between “us” and “them” began to take form during the Romantic period, when England became a desirable Occidental space, connected with but superior to distant lands. Delving into the works of Wordsworth, Austen, Byron, Dickens, and others to trace an arc of celebration, ambivalence, and criticism influenced by these imperial dynamics, Makdisi demonstrates the extent to which Romanticism offered both hopes for and warnings against future developments in Occidentalism. Revealing that Romanticism provided a way to resist imperial logic about improvement and moral virtue, Making England Western is an exciting contribution to the study of both British literature and colonialism.

Book Of Body and Brush

  • Author : Angela Zito
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 9780226987286
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Of Body and Brush written by Angela Zito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Qianlong emperor, who dominated the religious and political life of eighteenth-century China, was in turn dominated by elaborate ritual prescriptions. These texts determined what he wore and ate, how he moved, and above all how he performed the yearly Grand Sacrifices. In Of Body and Brush, Angela Zito offers a stunningly original analysis of the way ritualizing power was produced jointly by the throne and the official literati who dictated these prescriptions. Forging a critical cultural historical method that challenges traditional categories of Chinese studies, Zito shows for the first time that in their performance, the ritual texts embodied, literally, the metaphysics upon which imperial power rested. By combining rule through the brush (the production of ritual texts) with rule through the body (mandated performance), the throne both exhibited its power and attempted to control resistance to it. Bridging Chinese history, anthropology, religion, and performance and cultural studies, Zito brings an important new perspective to the human sciences in general.

Book Dealing with Terrorism

Download or read book Dealing with Terrorism written by Bruno S. Frey and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emphasizing a positive approach to dealing with terrorism (the carrot), this book provides a critique of deterrence policy (the stick) which can be ineffective and even counterproductive, and proposes three alternative and effective anti-terrorist policies: Decentralization reduces vulnerability to terrorist attacks. A system with many different centers is more stable due to its diversity, enabling one part to substitute for another. Positive incentives can be offered to actual and prospective terrorists not to engage in violent acts. Incentives include: reintegrating terrorists into society, welcoming repentents and offering them valued opportunities. Diverting attention by naming several terrorist groups potentially responsible for a particular terrorist act. The government thus supplies more information than the terrorist responsible would wish.

Book The Left the Right and the Jews

Download or read book The Left the Right and the Jews written by W.D. Rubinstein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, this book examines anti-semitism in the Western world. The author concludes that, fringe neo-Nazi groups notwithstanding, significant anti-semitism is largely a left-wing rather than a right-wing phenomenon. He finds that Jews have reacted to this change in their situation and in attitudes towards them by making a shift to the right in most Western countries, with the major exception of the United States. Considering the contribution of Jews to socialist thought from Marx onwards and the equally lengthy history of right-wing anti-semitism, this shift is one of the most significant in Jewish history. This movement to the right is discussed in separate chapters, as is Soviet anti-semitism and the status of the State of Israel. Examined in depth are the implications of this shift in attitude for Jewish philosophy and self-identity.

Book Adam Smith and Modern Economics

Download or read book Adam Smith and Modern Economics written by E. G. West and published by Aldershot, Hants, England : E. Elgar. This book was released on 1990 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adam Smith and Modern Economics provides a lively introduction to some of the very latest economic concepts and debates reinterpreted from the work of the 'father of economics'. Professor West demonstrates the continuing relevance of his work, two centuries after his death, with special emphasis on the inspiration he has given to economic research during the last two decades. Most notable has been the focus in the 1980s on refutable hypotheses in Smith's writing and the work of testing them with systematic data that were not available in his time. It is shown that even Smith's central invisible hand theorem is now being translated into a set of falsifiable predictions and that these have withstood important empirical tests in the late 1980s. The book makes an important contribution by demonstrating the continuing relevance of Smith's work to economics in the late 20th century.
