Book excerpt: Kitchenalia showcases the vast creative potential of vintage kitchenware, reclaimed furniture and upcycled accessories. Here is everything you need for furnishing and styling a kitchen with personality, panache and unique retro charm. Kitchenalia is an inspiring guide to putting together a unique and creative kitchen using vintage pots and pans, family treasures such as your grandmotherâ??s old scales, classic designs that have stood the test of time, retro-inspired and second-hand china and glass and reclaimed and reinvented surfaces and furniture. This book demonstrates that period pieces, whether retro utensils and gadgets, farmhouse furniture or salvaged surfaces, are the antithesis of the mass-produced modern alternatives and have a timeless integrity. Sourcing such items from flea markets and antiques fairs is a unique and rewarding way to kit out a kitchen. Vinny Lee first shows how three designers transform a modern fitted kitchen in very different ways, to demonstrate how easy it is to add a personal sense of style. The Kitchenalia Kitchen then showcases the key styles and themes that characterize this approach, including the Retro Kitchen, the Collectorâ??s Kitchen, the Reclaimed Kitchen and the Painted Kitchen. Kitchenalia Elements presents everything that can be used to get the look you want, from pans, crockery, storage tins and containers to furniture, surfaces and lighting. Packed with advice on sourcing, reinventing, repurposing and displaying, Kitchenalia is an inspiring and informative guide to creating a kitchen with heart and soul.

Book How to Collect Art

Download or read book How to Collect Art written by Virginia Blackburn and published by White Owl. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People have always made art and people have always collected art. But it is only recently that collecting became possible for everyone, not just the very rich. Indeed, collecting has never been more popular, as the rise of art fairs, antique fairs, television programs devoted to finding treasures in your attic and much more attests. And not only is collecting fun, it could be potentially very profitable, too. But where to start? These days everything is collectable, from Old Masters to 1950s kitchenalia and it can be bewildering when you start out. And not just when you start out. Even experienced collectors need some help and guidance and How To Collect Art provides exactly this. Author and collecting expert Virginia Blackburn takes you through everything you need to know, tackling not only mainstream fields such as paintings, furniture, china and statuary, but through antiquities, modern sculpture, Sailors’ Valentines, street art, and much more. This is a comprehensive look at many and varied fields of collecting, for amateur and professional alike. Virginia also explains how to educate yourself in your chosen field, and where to go to find the art you buy, covering galleries, auctions, degree shows and more. She explains how, when and where to bargain, looks at ways of displaying your collection and helps you get into the mindset of a collector. Art may be for art’s sake, but it provides the rest of us with a lot of pleasure too.

  • Publisher : Jacqui Small
  • Release : 2017-09-21
  • ISBN : 1911127748
  • Pages : 144 pages

Download or read book Assembled written by Eszter Karpati and published by Jacqui Small. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know that you can transform a cheese grater, a few bits of old cutlery and a handful of nuts and bolts into a household robot brimming with character in no time? Presented like a recipe book, Assembled will inspire you to make your own bots from random flea market finds and some unwanted junk through 23 quirky "robot recipes". Each of the 23 robots is shown through the transformation of a group of “found objects” into a finished sculpture with accompanying instructions on inspiration, assemblage methods and bonding techniques. The projects are disassembled to their very core to reveal not just the easily identifiable elements used in their creation, such as a tennis racket, thermos, or bicycle frame, but also every screw, bolt, thread, rope or wire used to assemble them. The text accompanying each piece comes from the artists and offers a unique insight into the creation and character of each individual robot. These charming background stories describe the journey from seemingly random, found objects to a finished, named creation, and are followed with precise instructions on how each piece is put together. A list of individual components and tools used completes the "recipes". The three-dimensional counterpart of collage, as an art form assemblage art traces its origins back to Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Marcel Duchamp who famously attached a bicycle wheel to a stool and called it a readymade. The term assemblages was first used by Jean Dubuffet in the 1950s to describe a series of collages using butterfly wings while the genre of assemblage art was created in 1961 by Peter Selz and William Seitz who co-curated the exhibition The Art of Assemblage at the MoMA in New York.

Book excerpt: Every modern kitchen features a fridge and a cupboard. The bare essentials. But for Natalia Conroy, they are an orchard - the source of abundant meals, platefuls of fresh salads or slow-cooked vegetables - it just requires a little imagination. Natalia's cooking draws inspiration from seasonal produce, which she combines with essential everyday ingredients - a little cream, fresh herbs, good stock, a head of garlic, leftover cheese or wine - so that nothing goes to waste. She matches dishes to occasions, time constraints or even mood, relishing the endless possibilities on offer with a thoughtfully stocked fridge and storecupboard. With over 100 recipes grouped around the dairy compartment (storing eggs, milk, cream and wine), the vegetable drawer (housing root vegetable and robust herbs), and the top drawer (garlic, onions, lemons and fresh seasonal herbs), Natalia takes one hero ingredient and builds the dish around a core flavour. Dill lifts a salad of beetroot and mustard. Fresh rosemary flavours a soup of white bean and ham hock, and another of pumpkin and smoked pork. Plain carrots are transformed into both carrot, mint and lemon salad and fluffy carrot and walnut cake Natalia's cooking celebrates simply, affordable food, cooked really well - celebrating taste, aroma and the joy of eating and sharing.
