Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kit Carson in California On his first far western journey, in 1829-30, as a junior member of Ewing Young's band of beaver trappers, Carson traversed that part of Arizona and California now crossed by the Santa Fe Railroad, and was one of the first Americans to cover this entire route. But little is known of Young's first expedition. Practically all we have is the short notice by the veteran fur-hunter, J. J. Warner, who wrote of this, from hearsay (reminiscences of Early California, 1831 to 1846. Hist. Soc. Of Southern Calif. Vol. VII, 1909, pp. 176 and the account which Carson himself has left us. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the author of Ghost Soldiers comes an eye-opening history of the American conquest of the West—"a story full of authority and color, truth and prophecy" (The New York Times Book Review). In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness. At the center of this sweeping tale is Kit Carson, the trapper, scout, and soldier whose adventures made him a legend. Sides shows us how this illiterate mountain man understood and respected the Western tribes better than any other American, yet willingly followed orders that would ultimately devastate the Navajo nation. Rich in detail and spanning more than three decades, this is an essential addition to our understanding of how the West was really won.

Book The Life of Kit Carson

Download or read book The Life of Kit Carson written by Edward S. Ellis and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As one can surmise from the title, the following book is a biography of a man named Kit Carson. He was an American frontiersman, a fur trapper, wilderness guide, Indian agent, and U.S. Army officer. He became a frontier legend in his own lifetime by biographies and news articles, and exaggerated versions of his exploits were the subject of dime novels. His understated nature belied confirmed reports of his fearlessness, combat skills, tenacity, and profound effect on the westward expansion of the United States.

Book excerpt: In A Newer World, David Roberts serves as a guide through John C. Frémont's and Kit Carson's adventures through unknown American territory to achieve manifest destiny. Between 1842 and 1854 John C. Frémont, renowned as the nineteenth century's greatest explorer, and Kit Carson, the legendary scout and Indian fighter, boldly ventured into untamed territory to fulfill America's "manifest destiny." Drawing on little-known primary sources, as well as his own travels through the lands Frémont and Carson explored, David Roberts recreates their expeditions, second in significance only to those of Lewis and Clark. A Newer World is a harrowing narrative of hardship and adventure and a poignant reminder of the cultural tragedy that westward expansion inflicted on the Native American.

Book Kit Carson and the Wild Frontier

Download or read book Kit Carson and the Wild Frontier written by Ralph Moody and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1826 an undersized sixteen-year-old apprentice ran away from a saddle maker in Franklin, Missouri, to join one of the first wagon trains crossing the prairie on the Santa Fe Trail. Kit Carson (1809-68) wanted to be a mountain man, and he spent his next sixteen years learning the paths of the West, the ways of its Native inhabitants, and the habits of the beaver, becoming the most successful and respected fur trapper of his time. From 1842 to 1848 he guided John C. Frémont's mapping expeditions through the Rockies and was instrumental in the U.S. military conquest of California during the Mexican War. In 1853 he was appointed Indian agent at Taos, and later he helped negotiate treaties with the Apaches, Kiowas, Comanches, Arapahos, Cheyennes, and Utes that finally brought peace to the southwestern frontier. Ralph Moody's biography of Kit Carson, appropriate for readers young and old, is a testament to the judgment and loyalty of the man who had perhaps more influence than any other on the history and development of the American West.
