Download or read book Kingston s Captive Kingston Security 2 written by Carole Mortimer and published by Carole Mortimer. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KINGSTON’S CAPTIVE (Kingston Security 2) is the second book in USA Today and Amazon International #1 Bestselling Author, Carole Mortimer’s, Contemporary Romantic Suspense series. Adam is learning the hard way that having feelings for a certain woman doesn’t necessarily mean she’s ever going to return those feelings. Especially if that woman is the beautiful but stubbornly infuriating Cara Ferrari-Smythe. But Adam is only too happy to ignore Cara’s objections to having his presence in her life when he knows she’s once again in danger. When Cara first saw the dark and brooding Adam Kingston again a year ago, at an art exhibition where some of her paintings were being shown, it had felt as if she had been waiting forever for him to come back into her life. That Adam didn‘t feel the same way about her became obvious, when he didn’t so much as speak one word to her that night before leaving, let alone acknowledge the two of them had ever met before. Then a week later Cara saw him again, walking past her London home. And again a few days later, outside a restaurant, where she was having lunch with friends. She saw him again, and again, until Cara knew the ‘coincidence’ of them suddenly being in the same place at the same time wasn’t coincidence at all but was being deliberately engineered by Adam Kingston. Why he was doing it, Cara still had no idea. Asking him for help when it seems she’s once again in danger is definitely not on her list of things to do. Adam doesn’t agree, and Cara soon discovers he’s one very stubborn and determined man.

Download or read book Jamaica Ladies written by Christine Walker and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2020-04-17 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamaica Ladies is the first systematic study of the free and freed women of European, Euro-African, and African descent who perpetuated chattel slavery and reaped its profits in the British Empire. Their actions helped transform Jamaica into the wealthiest slaveholding colony in the Anglo-Atlantic world. Starting in the 1670s, a surprisingly large and diverse group of women helped secure English control of Jamaica and, crucially, aided its developing and expanding slave labor regime by acquiring enslaved men, women, and children to protect their own tenuous claims to status and independence. Female colonists employed slaveholding as a means of advancing themselves socially and financially on the island. By owning others, they wielded forms of legal, social, economic, and cultural authority not available to them in Britain. In addition, slaveholding allowed free women of African descent, who were not far removed from slavery themselves, to cultivate, perform, and cement their free status. Alongside their male counterparts, women bought, sold, stole, and punished the people they claimed as property and vociferously defended their rights to do so. As slavery's beneficiaries, these women worked to stabilize and propel this brutal labor regime from its inception.

Book Violence in Canada

Download or read book Violence in Canada written by Jeffrey Ross and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people consider Canada, particularly in comparison to its southern cousin, as a "peaceable kingdom." However, as the historical record demonstrates, Canadians have never been a thoroughly non-violent people. Violence in Canada highlights from an interdisciplinary perspective the major areas and contexts where violence takes place.Consisting of thirteen contributions, the book forms an indispensable guide to the subject. All of the authors are experts in their field, many with international reputations, and are drawn from the fields of sociology, political science, history, and criminology. The foreword by Ted Robert Gurr, author of Violence in America, is followed by an historical analysis of violence on the Canadian western frontier. Other scholars describe contemporary violence: by and against indigenous peoples, women, children, and the elderly; in labor-related disputes; homicide; police and prison violence; terrorism; and discuss government responses and policy implications. Each chapter specifically addresses the sociological and political dimensions of violence. The authors make ample use of statistics and empirical research. Jeffrey Ian Ross's introduction outlines the sociopolitical dynamics of violence, and his summary chapter offers directions for future research. When the book was first published in 1995 it was widely praised by scholarly journals and has since become a standard text in the study of violence and modern Canadian cultural studies. The book is all the more valuable as its new introduction places its findings in the context of research that has been produced since the original publication. Violence in Canada will be of interest to sociologists, criminologists, and political scientists.Jeffrey Ian Ross is an associate professor in the Division of Criminology, Criminal Justice and Social Policy and fellow with the Center for Comparative and International Law, University of Baltimore. His work has appeared in many academic journals and chapters in academic texts, as well as articles in popular magazines in Canada and the United States. He is the author, co-author, editor, or co-editor of eight books.Ted Robert Gurr is Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland. Among his books are Why Men Rebel and Violence in America.

Book Murder on the Inside

Download or read book Murder on the Inside written by Catherine Fogarty and published by Biblioasis. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shortlisted for the Speaker's Book Award • Shortlisted for The Brass Knuckles Award for Best Nonfiction Crime Book “You have taken our civil rights—we want our human rights.” On April 14, 1971, a handful of prisoners attacked the guards at Kingston Penitentiary and seized control, making headlines around the world. For four intense days, the prisoners held the guards hostage while their leaders negotiated with a citizens’ committee of journalists and lawyers, drawing attention to the dehumanizing realities of their incarceration, including overcrowding, harsh punishment and extreme isolation. But when another group of convicts turned their pent-up rage towards some of the weakest prisoners, tensions inside the old stone walls erupted, with tragic consequences. As heavily armed soldiers prepared to regain control of the prison through a full military assault, the inmates were finally forced to surrender. Murder on the Inside tells the harrowing story of a prison in crisis against the backdrop of a pivotal moment in the history of human rights. Occurring just months before the uprising at Attica Prison, the Kingston riot has remained largely undocumented, and few have known the details—yet the tense drama chronicled here is more relevant today than ever. A gripping account of the standoff and the efforts for justice and reform it inspired, Murder on the Inside is essential reading for our times. Includes 24 pages of photographs.

Book Church and Society in Hungary and in the Hungarian Diaspora

This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Church and Society in Hungary and in the Hungarian Diaspora, Nándor Dreisziger tells the story of Christianity in Hungary and the Hungarian diaspora from its earliest years until the present. Beginning with the arrival of Christianity in the middle Danube basin, Dreisziger follows the fortunes of the Hungarians' churches through the troubled times of the Middle Ages, the years of Ottoman and Habsburg domination, and the turmoil of the twentieth century: wars, revolutions, foreign occupations, and totalitarian rule. Complementing this detailed history of religious life in Hungary, Dreisziger describes the fate of the churches of Hungarian minorities in countries that received territories from the old Kingdom of Hungary after the First World War. He also tells the story of the rise, halcyon days, and decline of organized religious life among Hungarian immigrants to Western Europe, the Americas, and elsewhere. The definitive guide to the dramatic history of Hungary's churches, Church and Society in Hungary and in the Hungarian Diaspora chronicles their proud past and speculates about their uncertain future.
