Book excerpt: From the author of Losing Control aka The Rook brings you into the world of KINGS, QUEENS and PAWNS "The Chessboard is the world, the pieces are the phenomena of the universe, the rules of the game are what we call the laws of nature and the player on the other side is hidden from us" - Thomas Huxley The second book in 'The Chess Peace' series unlocks hidden doors the Kingston's didn't know existed. Doors they will go to extremes to keep locked. The Kingston's find themselves on the chessboard of life. Friends, foes and family each vie for the title of the 'King.' Each player comes face to face with shrouded demons from the past merely masquerading. As the game intensifies, each will find themselves on the cusp of being in check. For one of the Kingston's, this could mean check mate. Socialite Celia Banks-Kingston reunites with her former lover, Antony Basile, while in London. Little does Celia know that Antony is nothing more than a clever diversion. His partner, Sara Robin Kent, Celia's nemeses, travels to New York, where she sets out to destroy the Kingston's with the help of Antony. That is, if he doesn't have a change of heart. Pierce Kingston spirals out of control after learning that his fiance, Kim Duquette, is in a coma. Even in a catatonic state, she isn't safe from the vengeance of her ex lover, Jake Montrose. Jake and Pierce's ex girlfriend, Casey Taylor, devise their own plan to gain what they both want. Everyone is a player. Everyone is vying to be crowned King. But in all games, there is a winner and a loser. Who will come out on top? It's hard to tell when everyone is hiding behind a mask. Everyone has something to hide and they will go to great lengths to keep from having the masks stripped away. Social status proves to be harder to maintain when you have everything to lose. The board is set. The players are in place. Let the game commence...

At only nine, Princess Alais of France is sent to live in England until she is of age to wed Prince Richard, son of King Henry II and Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Alais is an innocent pawn on the chessboard of dynastic marriage, her betrothal intended to broker an uneasy truce between the nations. Estranged from her husband, Eleanor sees a kindred spirit in this determined young girl. She embraces Alais as a daughter, teaching the princess what it takes to be a woman of power in a world of men. But as Alais grows to maturity and develops ambitions of her own, Eleanor begins to see her as a threat-and their love for each other becomes overshadowed by their bitter rivalry, dark betrayals, conflicting passions, and a battle for revenge over the throne of England itself.

Book Edith Wharton and Mary Roberts Rinehart at the Western Front 1915

Download or read book Edith Wharton and Mary Roberts Rinehart at the Western Front 1915 written by Ed Klekowski and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1915, the Western Front was a 450–mile line of trenches, barbed wire and concrete bunkers, stretching across Europe. Attempts to break the stalemate were murderous and futile. Censorship of the press was extreme—no one wanted the carnage reported. Remakably, the Allied command gave two intrepid American women, Edith Wharton and Mary Roberts Rinehart, permission to visit the front and report on what they saw. Their travels are reconstructed from their own published accounts, Rinehart’s unpublished day-by-day notes, and the writings of other journalists who toured the front in 1915. The present authors’ explorations of the places Wharton and Rinehart visited serves as a travel guide to the Western Front.

Book Americans in Occupied Belgium 1914 1918

Download or read book Americans in Occupied Belgium 1914 1918 written by Ed Klekowski and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-04-14 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belgium in the First World War--the first country invaded, the longest occupied, and when the war finally ended, the first forgotten. In 1914, Belgium was home to a large American colony which included representatives of American companies, artists, writers and diplomats with the American Legation. After the invasion, American journalists and adventurers flocked there to follow the action; military restrictions on travel were less stringent than in England or France. As the most industrialized country in Europe, Belgium depended upon trade and food imports to support its economy. The war isolated Belgium and wholesale starvation was imminent by the fall of 1914. Herbert Hoover and his Commission for Relief in Belgium raised funds to purchase and import food to sustain Belgium and, eventually, Occupied France as well. Idealistic American volunteers (including some Rhodes scholars) supervised food distribution in the occupation zone. Along the Western Front in Belgium, hundreds of Americans served (illegally) in the British and Canadian armies. This book tells the story of the German invasion, occupation and retreat from the perspective of Americans who were there.
