Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kings of the Rod, Rifle and Gun, Vol. 2 In India he spent ten years, rising rapidly to the post Of collector and judge. His station was thirty miles from the nearest English doctor, so he added the study Of medicine to his regular work. This was heavy enough, but did not hinder him from joining any young English man who Came to hunt. In one Of these hunts he saved the life Of the then Lord Gifford, shooting a tiger, which his lordship, who was short-sighted, had not noticed, and which was in the act Of springing. On another Of these excursions the party encamped on ground full Of malaria, and were struck with jungle fever, Of which several died. Oswell, thanks to his splendid constitution, struggled through, after being insensible for several days. NO sooner had he recovered consciousness than he set to work on a pile Of his district papers - complaints from villages, reports Of gang-robberies, etc - with a wet towel round his head. He Cleared his table at the cost of a dangerous relapse, the effects Of which he could not shake Off so he was sent to the Cape on sick-leave, those who saw him embark doubting if he would ever reach the Cape alive. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rod and Gun Club Ell, young man, I will tell you, for your satisfaction, that I have got you provided for, for four long years to come. The speaker was Mr. Brigham. As he uttered these words he placed his hat and gloves on the table, and looked down at his son Lester, who had just entered the library in obedience to the summons he had received, and who sat on the edge of the sofa, twirling his cap in his hands. The boy looked frightened, while the expression on his father's face told very plainly that he was angry about something. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Sportsman's Gun and Rifle, Vol. 2 of 2: Including Game and Wildfowl Guns, Sporting and Match Rifles and Revolvers; The Sporting Rifle, Match Rifle, and Revolver Although, as I stated in my Preface to the First Volume of this work, I began to examine into the subjects connected with the shot gun and rifle a quarter of a century ago, I had not kept my knowledge on a level with the great progress made in the latter arm during the last few years. When Sir Joseph Whitworth promulgated the results of his experiments in 1858, I took considerable pains to ascertain their value, not only from a military point of view, but also from that of the Sportsman and for some years after the institution of the annual trial of small bores by the National Rifle Association, I carefully-attended them at Woolwich, and duly reported the results in the Field, as well as the shooting of the selected rifle at Wimbledon. After some few years, however, they ceased to be of much value to the sportsman, and the pressure of other matters induced me not only to forego all allusion to the trials, but also to discontinue the reports of the Wimbledon Meetings. The result was that, when, after the publication of the first volume, on the Shot gun, I had to turn my attention to the rifle, Ifound that I was several. He had pur chased this, rifle some time before and wished me to try it out and see how. It would act on bear. I tried it all right and saw how it acted and I also observed how the bear acted. I had been hunting for two or three days without seeing more than a track, when one afternoon on com ing down from the top of a, high mountain I saw a bear feeding on an open slide in the valley below, about one half mile away. On look ing through a pair of glasses I car ried it proved to be a grizzly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Pistol and Revolver Shooting Vol 34 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pistol and Revolver Shooting Vol 34 Classic Reprint written by Abraham Lincoln Artman Himmelwright and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pistol and Revolver Shooting, Vol. 34 Interest in pistol and revolver shooting has increased very rapidly in recent years and particularly since smokeless powder has been introduced. The revolver and the magazine pistol now constitute part of the regular equipment of army and navy officers and cavalry troops. Regulations governing practice shooting with these arms have been issued and adopted by both branches of the service and by the National Guard of the various States. In the National Rifle Association and in the various State rifle associations that have recently been organized, pistol and revolver shooting has an important place, and the matches provided are largely patronized. In the numerous civilian shooting clubs scattered throughout the country pistol and revolver shooting has become extremely popular, and in many cases the majority of the members practice more frequently with the smaller arms than with the rifle. Practice with the pistol and revolver affords training in sighting, steady holding, and pulling the trigger, which are the essential features of rifle shooting also.
