Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains the Essay volume and the Exhibit Catalogue volume. The catalogue accompanies an international exhibition, "First Kings of Europe," and the essay volume, First Kings of Europe: From Farmers to Rulers in Prehistoric Southeastern Europe, that examine the artifacts and cultures of this area from the Neolithic to the Iron Age. Over several millennia, early agricultural villages gave rise to tribal kingdoms and monarchies, replacing smaller, more egalitarian social structures with complex state organizations led by royal individuals invested with power. Several hundred objects and artifacts in the exhibition are portrayed in the catalog, accompanied by introductory text and detailed entries for each item. The spectacular and highly detailed color photographs introduce us to the gold and silver ornaments, bronze and iron weaponry, rich metal hoards and magnificent ceremonial vessels that are masterpieces from this period of history. Many of them have never left their countries of origin, making this exhibition and these two volumes documenting it an opportunity not to miss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A richly illustrated account of the rulers of the first three dynasties of the ancient Egyptian civilization, written by renowned Egyptologist Aidan Dodson The five centuries that followed the unification of Egypt around 3100 BC—the first three dynasties—were crucial in the evolution of the Egyptian state. During this time all the key elements of the civilization that would endure for three millennia were put in place, centered on the semidivine king himself. The First Pharaohs: Their Lives and Afterlives looks at what we know about the two-dozen kings (and one queen-regent) who ruled Egypt during this formative era, from the scanty evidence for the events of their reigns, through to their surviving monuments. It also considers how they were remembered under their successors, when some of the earliest kings’ names were attributed to allegedly ancient ideas and events, and the ways in which some of their monuments became tourist attractions or were even wholly repurposed. Aidan Dodson recounts how two centuries of modern scholarship have allowed these rulers to emerge from an oblivion so total that some archaeologists had come to doubt their very existence outside the works of ancient chroniclers. Then, within a decade at the end of the nineteenth century, archaeological discoveries revealed a whole series of tombs and other monuments that not only confirmed these rulers’ existence, but also showcased the skills of Egyptian craftsmen at the dawn of history.

Book Kings A Fascinating Look at the Rulers of Ancient Israel

Download or read book Kings A Fascinating Look at the Rulers of Ancient Israel written by Paulie Mugure Mugo and published by . This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the time God appointed Saul of Gibeah the first king of Israel, to the time of the nation's Babylonian captivity, a total of forty-two kings ruled over the kingdoms of Israel and Judah.Fascinating stories arise from this era, a period that spanned close to five hundred years. Stories of kings who ruled for over fifty years, and one who occupied the throne for a single week.Stories of wise kings, warrior kings, mighty kings; honorable, God-fearing kings. Tales of kings who were irredeemably corrupt; evil, murderous, wicked kings. And a queen who made their exploits look positively saintly. But through all these stories runs one intriguing thread. When the kings were good, did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and boldly enforced His law, the people, too, were good. And the Lord promptly demonstrated His faithfulness by strengthening the king, blessing the kingdom, and protecting the land from her enemies. But when the kings were bad, the people were, well, rotten. And the Lord dealt with them accordingly. This book is a unique journey through this period; a fascinating look at the rulers of ancient Israel, and what they teach us today.

Book Dynasties of Egypt

Download or read book Dynasties of Egypt written by Norah Romney and published by DTTV PUBLICATIONS. This book was released on 2021-02-10 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In ancient Egyptian history, some dynasties prospered, and some faded out of existence. They are traditionally divided into thirty-two pharaonic dynasties; they are classified into "kingdoms" and "intermediate periods" from these dynasties.Manetho, the third-century Egyptian priest, gives us the first thirty dynasties, which he published in Aegytiaca, now lost to ravages of time. These likely stems from the Ptolemaic rule in Egypt. The Ptolemaic Dynasty and the 31st dynasty form the remaining two. While widely used and valuable, the system does have its weaknesses. Some dynasties only governed part of Egypt and endured concurrently with other dynasties based in other cities. The Seventh might not have been at all, the Tenth appears to be a succession of the Ninth, and there may have been one or numerous Upper Egyptian Dynasties before the First Dynasty. The privilege of "Pharaoh" is utilized for those leaders of Ancient Egypt who governed after the alliance of Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt by Narmer throughout the Early Dynastic Period, circa 3100 BC. However, the specific title "Pharaoh" was not employed to direct Egypt's kings by their peers until the dominion of Merneptah in the 19th Dynasty, c. 1200 BC. Along with the name Pharaoh for later rulers, an Ancient Egyptian sovereign titulary was used by Egyptian kings, which prevailed relatively consistent during Ancient Egyptian history, originally featuring a Horus name.Egypt was steadily administered, at least in part, by domestic ruler-pharaohs for nearly 2500 years, until it was overcome by the Kingdom of Kush in the late 8th century BC, whose kings embraced the classical pharaonic titular for themselves. Following the Kushite victory, Egypt underwent another independent constitutional rule before being subdued by the Achaemenid Empire, whose governors also assumed the title of "Pharaoh." The last regional Pharaoh of Egypt was Nectanebo II, Pharaoh before the Achaemenids defeated Egypt for a second time.Achaemenid control over Egypt ended abruptly through Alexander the Great's triumphs in 332 BC, after which it was controlled by the Hellenic Pharaohs of the Ptolemaic Dynasty. Their government and Egypt's sovereignty came to an end when Egypt became a Rome province in 30 BC. Augustus and succeeding Roman dictators were styled as Pharaohs when in Egypt until Maximinus Data in 314 AD.The dates provided in this list of pharaohs are estimated. They are based fundamentally on Ancient Egypt's established chronology, often based on the Digital Egypt for Universities database generated by the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, but other dates taken from other professionals may be designated separately.

At first consisting only of the Horus name, the titulary grew to include other phrases chosen to represent the king’s special relationship with the divine world. By the Middle Kingdom (late twenty-first century B.C.E.), the full fivefold titulary was clearly established, and kings henceforth used all five names regularly. This volume includes all rulers’ names from the so-called Dynasty 0 (ca. 3200 B.C.E.) to the last Ptolemaic ruler in the late first century B.C.E., offered in transliteration and English translation with an introduction and notes.

Download or read book Pharaoh written by Marie Vandenbeusch and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fresh look at the British Museum's celebrated and extensive ancient Egyptian collection from across three thousand years Pharaoh: King of Ancient Egypt introduces readers to three thousand years of Egypt's ancient history by unveiling its famous rulers--the pharaohs--using some of the finest objects from the vast holdings of the British Museum, along with masterworks from the collection fo the Cleveland Museum of Art.. In an introductory essay, Margaret Maitland looks at Egyptian kingship in terms of both ideology and practicality. Then Aude Semat considers the Egyptian image of kingship, its roles and its uses. In ten additional sections, Marie Vandenbeusch delves into themes related to the land of ancient Egypt, conceptions of kingship, the exercise of power, royal daily life, war and diplomacy, and death and afterlife. Detailed entries by Vandenbeusch and Semat cover key works relating to the pharaohs. These objects, beautifully illustrated in 180 photographs, include monumental sculpture, architectural pieces, funerary objects, exquisite jewelry, and papyri. The rulers of ancient Egypt were not always male, or even always Egyptian. At times, Egypt was divided by civil war, conquered by foreign powers, or ruled by competing kings. Many of the objects surviving from ancient Egypt represent the image a pharaoh wanted to project, but this publication also looks past the myth to explore the realities and immense challenges of ruling one of the greatest civilizations the world has seen.

Book The Good Kings

Download or read book The Good Kings written by Kara Cooney and published by . This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in the tradition of historians like Mary Beard and Stacy Schiff who find modern lessons in ancient history, this provocative narrative explores the lives of five remarkable pharaohs who ruled Egypt with absolute power, shining a new light on the country's 3,000-year empire and its meaning today. In a new era when democracies around the world are threatened or crumbling, best-selling author Kara Cooney turns to five ancient Egyptian pharaohs--Khufu, Senwosret III, Akenhaten, Ramses II, and Taharqa--to understand why many so often give up power to the few, and what it can mean for our future. As the first centralized political power on earth, the pharaohs and their process of divine kingship can tell us a lot about the world's politics, past and present. Every animal-headed god, every monumental temple, every pyramid, every tomb, offers extraordinary insight into a culture that combined deeply held religious beliefs with uniquely human schemes to justify a system in which one ruled over many. From Khufu, the man who built the Great Pyramid at Giza as testament to his authoritarian reign, and Taharqa, the last true pharaoh who worked to make Egypt great again, we discover a clear lens into understanding how power was earned, controlled, and manipulated in ancient times. And in mining the past, Cooney uncovers the reason why societies have so willingly chosen a dictator over democracy, time and time again.
