Book excerpt: The book is a travel adventure novel by English travel writer and historian Alexander William Kinglake. The book proved to be a very popular work of Eastern travel, apparently first published anonymously, in which he described a journey he made about ten years earlier in Syria, Palestine and Egypt, together with his Eton contemporary Lord Pollington. His witty sense of humor present the book not just as a travel account of his different destinations but also about how he navigates through the situations he comes across.

Book A W Kinglake

Download or read book A W Kinglake written by William Tuckwell and published by . This book was released on 2009-02-01 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander William Kinglake (1809-1891) was an English travel writer and historian. He was born near Taunton, Somerset and educated at Eton College and Cambridge. He was called to the Bar in 1837, and built up a thriving legal practice, which in 1856 he abandoned in order to devote himself to literature and public life. His first literary venture had been Eothen, a very popular work of Eastern travel, published in 1844; but his magnum opus was his Invasion of the Crimea, in 8 volumes, published from 1863 to 1887, one of the most effective works of its class. It has been accused of being too favourable to Lord Raglan, and unduly hostile to Napoleon III, for whom the author had an extreme aversion.
