This book was released on 2014-01-24 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inside Zooneyville is the first book of THE UNKNOWN KINGDOM TRILOGY. Living under the golden, shining material surface of the United States are millions of people who live in an openly hostile climate of oppression. Their existence has been going on for generations and it is a tragic state of affairs for once free people. The coming of the european to this continent was not a wondrous, happy event for the dark skinned, free peoples already living, governing and thriving on this continent. Enslavement was their doctrine, oppression the heavy yoke of containment. We are their descendants and the lineage of those brought here from Afrika in chains. Living in cities throughout the U.S. you have seen us, ignored us and have called us by many insulting names; negro, colored, illegal aliens, savages, thugs, gangsters, ignorant, coons, poor people, and a plethora of others. We have been ostracized, belittled and forced to live in substandard dwellings (many times in the guise of help), underpaid, mis-educated, despised and forgotten. Yet, we survive and live hidden out of sight and out of mind as those who lived in the Unknown Kingdom of Zooneyville... Walk with me. Come with me, Inside Zooneyville to come to terms with the reality of millions...

Download or read book Ancient Egyptians at Play written by Walter Crist and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rich history of Egypt has provided famous examples of board games played in antiquity. Each of these games provides evidence of contact between Egypt and its neighbours. From pre-dynastic rule to Arab and Ottoman invasions, Egypt's past is visible on game boards. This volume starts by introducing the reader to board games as well as instruments of chance and goes on to trace the history and distribution of ancient Egyptian games, looking particularly at how they show contact with other cultures and civilizations. Game practices, which were also part of Egyptian rituals and divination, travelled throughout the eastern Mediterranean. This book explores the role of Egypt in accepting and disseminating games during its long history. Over the last few years, the extent and the modes of contact have become better understood through museum and archival research projects as well as surveys of archaeological sites in Egypt and its surrounding regions. The results allow new insight into ancient Egypt's international relations and the role of board games research in understanding its extent. Written by three authors known internationally for their expertise on this topic, this will be the first volume on Ancient Egyptian games of its kind and a much-needed contribution to the field of both Egyptology and board games studies.

Book Women and Capital Punishment in the United States

Download or read book Women and Capital Punishment in the United States written by David V. Baker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the execution of women in the United States has largely been ignored and scholars have given scant attention to gender issues in capital punishment. This historical analysis examines the social, political and economic contexts in which the justice system has put women to death, revealing a pattern of patriarchal domination and female subordination. The book includes a discussion of condemned women granted executive clemency and judicial commutations, an inquiry into women falsely convicted in potentially capital cases and a profile of the current female death row population.

Book Motherhood and Early Childhood in Ancient Egypt

Download or read book Motherhood and Early Childhood in Ancient Egypt written by Amandine Marshall and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2024-10-22 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A richly nuanced analysis of how ancient Egyptian society regarded and dealt with pregnancy, mothers, birth, and children In ancient Egypt, a woman’s primary role was that of mother, and as such she ensured her place within both her household and her community. And so, gods, doctor-magicians, as well as ghosts were all called upon to help the woman become pregnant. Pregnancy was not without risks, and the many tests, prescriptions, and spells that have survived to this day help us to understand obstetrics as it was practiced in those distant times. Once the woman had eluded the ill will of Seth—who was held responsible for miscarriages—and had reached her term, she was faced with the much awaited and yet also feared moment of birth. The successful delivery of a child into the world was seen as a gift of the gods, but it did not mean that the parent’s worries were over. Indeed, it has been estimated that a third of all children did not reach the age of five years despite the combined efforts of parents and doctor-magicians to protect them. Amandine Marshall draws upon a wealth of sources, including texts, images, iconography, artefacts, and children’s bodies themselves, as well as medicine, anthropology, and ethnography, to examine these issues and more, and in doing so sheds unprecedented light on the experience of maternity and early childhood in ancient Egypt.

Book Mistress of the House Mistress of Heaven

Download or read book Mistress of the House Mistress of Heaven written by Anne K. Capel and published by Hudson Hills. This book was released on 1996 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first-of-its-kind exhibit cataloged here focuses on the women of Egypt from all levels of society in works compiled strictly from American collections by American curators. Because the quantity of written records is limited (though enormous in comparison to most early societies), there is still much guesswork involved in determining the place women held in Egyptian society. It is clear that, unlike most ancient and not-so-ancient societies, Egypt conferred on women the legal right to own property and to barter their own goods, which means a larger record for current study. The essays here are both erudite and fascinating to read; the illustrations are clear and well presented in conjunction with the text. 117 colour & 112 b/w illustrations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking account of how the ancient Egyptians perceived children and childhood, from the Predynastic period to the end of the New Kingdom There could be no society, no family, and no social recognition without children. The way in which children were perceived, integrated, and raised within the family and the community established the very foundations of Egyptian society. Childhood in Ancient Egypt is the most comprehensive attempt yet published to reconstruct the everyday life of children from the Predynastic period to the end of the New Kingdom. Drawing on a vast wealth of textual, iconographic, and archaeological sources stretching over a period of 3,500 years, Amandine Marshall pieces together the portrait of a society in which children were ever-present in a multiplicity of situations. The ancient sources are primarily the expressions of male adults, who were little inclined to take an interest in the condition of the child, and the feelings of young Egyptians and all that touches on their emotional state can never be deduced from the sources. Nevertheless, by cross-referencing and comparing thousands of documents, Marshall has been able to explore how ancient Egyptians perceived children and childhood, and whether children had a particular status in the eyes of the law, society, and the Egyptian state. She examines the maintenance of the child and the care expended on its being, and discusses the kinds of clothing, jewelry, and hairstyles children wore, the activities that punctuated their daily lives, the kinds of games and toys they enjoyed, and what means were employed to protect them from illness, evil spirits, or ghosts. Illustrated with 160 drawings and photographs, this book sheds unprecedented light upon the experience of childhood in ancient Egypt and represents a major contribution to the growing field of ancient-world childhood studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One might think that a common name such as Brown would lead to an ordinary family. That is not the case for this family. Descended from John Brown and his family, who traveled on board the Mayflower, they descended from the Kings and Queens of Europe and can be traced back to the Merovingian Kings of France and the Sea Kings of Norway. Among the most notable ancestors are John Brown of the Mayflower, Robert Dudley (a favorite of Queen Elizabeth), the Lords of Kerr in Selkirk, Scotland, the Dukes of Northumberland, and the Douglas family. The Colaw/Coler/Kohler family shares the same German ancestors as President Roosevelt and includes the Comte Jean de Graf in Picardy, France.
