Book King s Chapel Sermons Classic Reprint

Download or read book King s Chapel Sermons Classic Reprint written by Andrew Preston Peabody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from King's Chapel Sermons The sermons in this volume were, all of them, preached at King's Chapel, and most of them writ ten for that use, the greater part of them dur ing the illness and since the death of my very dear friend, Rev. Henry W. Foote, under whose pastor ate I deemed it my privilege to place myself after I resigned my office as Preacher to the University. The last three sermons were printed at the request of the Wardens and Vestry, and are now reprinted. There are in Christian theology certain funda mental truths and in ethics certain eternal princi ples and laws, which should underlie all preaching, and must therefore often reappear from beneath a wide diversity of subject and of form. Repetition of this type I should be sorry to have shunned. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Sermons The supremacy OF the unseenwhen in the secret place of our soul we build our God, we form Him not out of cosmic forces, not out of gravitation and chemical attraction, but out of holiness and love. And, 10! As we look, the form is as of the Son of Man! The Absolute as Absolute is not enough for the religious life. Man must have some fixed, visible point, some crystalliza tion, as it were, of the All on which his love and reverence may rest. That is where the New Testament story meets him. Here he finds the humanizing and personalizing of the Infinite Goodness. In the study of this Life he tastes eter nity. And as he believes, the power to be good ows into him. Therefore knows he to-day the Christ, not only as human, but also as Divine; not only as a figure in history, but as the eternal Now. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the Day of the Ordeal: Sermons The sermons here printed are a selection from those preached in St. George's, Edinburgh, in 1915 - 16, in the absence, on combatant service, of the minister, Captain the Rev. Gavin Lang Pagan. Things new and old may be noted in them by other congregations to which I have ministered, and which I affectionately call to remembrance - in my former parish of Crieff, in King's College Chapel, Aberdeen, and in the Scots Church, Melbourne. I am indebted to Messrs. Hodder Stoughton for permission to reprint from the British Weekly the sermon on the Consecration of our Goods. His gentle countenance and gaze of love, His gracious words, and touch of almighty power, these were their daily consolation. What more did they need? While He was with them how could they have another Comforter? All sor rows gathered round Him; mourners clung to Him; the sick and the blind stretched out their hands to Him: consolation streamed from Him on ever}yt side. In the house of the sick, and at the grave of the dead, a virtue went out of Him both of healing and of life. His touch stayed the bier, and the kiss of His feet was the solace of penitents. When the, time was come for Him; to depart out of the worldt unto the Father, having 'loved His own' while He was in the world He loved them unto the end. Book A Ministry of Fifteen Years in a College Town

Download or read book A Ministry of Fifteen Years in a College Town written by J. T. Sunderland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Ministry of Fifteen Years in a College Town: A Sermon To one who has reached middle life there begins to be something pathetic in the thought of the hurrying years. To youth the flight of time is a desire and a delight, rather than the opposite. The boy longs for manhood - thinks it glorious to be approaching that consummation of human hopes. The young man is eager to get into the bustle. Stir and conflict of middle life. But when the conflict has been carried on for a few years, until the vista before begins perceptibly to shorten and that behind to lengthen, then a change comes, and the birthdays begin to have a touch of sadness in them, as we wonder why they hurry so fast to meet us. Ah! Time is our mystery of mysteries in this world. We cannot understand it; we can only stand dumb in its presence, and stretch out imploring hands to it as it steals our years away. Our only possible compensation, if not our only possible alleviation. Is to be found in the consciousness of spending the years, as they pass, for worthy and useful ends. Thus only can we get out of them the eternal gold that lies in their heart. Such thoughts as these crowd inevitably on my mind as I rise before you this morning, to remembering that we have been fifteen years together as pastor and people. Download or read book Sermons of REV John King Lord written by John King Lord and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons of Rev. John King Lord: Late Pastor of the First Orthodox Congregational Church in Cincinnati, Ohio IF that method of interpreting Scripture which is commended in this volume, be true; and if the ethical and theological views which grow naturally out of it, and are required by it, be according to the mind of God, then it must he confessed that they are of great consequence to society. They are not likely to be come of less consequence because they are unpopular; for truth is not afi'ected by human judgments, and the laws of Heaven stay not for the indifl'erence or unbelief of men. It is this, more than any private consideration, which has led to the printing of the book. Its chief end will be gained, if any persons who may think it worth their while to read it, should be induced to study more critically the subjects which it imperfectly discusses, and which the providence of God is now so remarkably pressing upon the attention of thinking men.
