Book The Unperceived Continuity of Isaiah

Download or read book The Unperceived Continuity of Isaiah written by James H. Charlesworth and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume highlights the textual evolution of the biblical book called Isaiah from the eighth to the third centuries BCE. The book was probably the most important Scripture for the Community that collected or composed the Dead Sea Scrolls; it significantly shaped the life and thoughts of John the Baptizer, Jesus, Paul, and the Evangelists. Distinguished scholars from the United States, Israel, Greece, and elsewhere discuss the continuing influence of Isaiah from antiquity to today and significantly through Jewish and Christian liturgies. With high-profile contributors including Dale Allison, Jeffrey Chadwick, James Charlesworth, and Emanuel Tov, the volume explores how the Book of Isaiah influenced Jewish and Christian texts and life for nearly three millennia. The collection develops from the insights and continuity of Isaiah itself to its relevance in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the lives of John the Baptizer and Jesus, as well as Paul's Letter to the Romans and the Intra-Canonical Gospels. This collection presents highly creative and ground-breaking scholarship focused on the origin and vital role of one of the most influential books in our culture.

Book excerpt: From the Introduction: The second volume of this collection follows Clemens from his first days as a resident journalist in California, late in May 1864, through the end of his first full year as a California resident, 1865. In this twenty-month period he wrote most of his work for the San Francisco Golden Era, the Morning Call, the Dramatic Chronicle, and the Californian. He began to publish somewhat more regularly in eastern journals, like the New York Saturday Press and the Weekly Review, and toward the end of the period he started a long assignment as the daily correspondent from San Francisco to the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise. In November 1865 he published "Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog" [no. 119] and by the beginning of 1866 the news of its success with eastern readers had begun to filter back to California. He was on the verge of national and international fame as a humorist.

Book I Don t Want to Be a Frog

Download or read book I Don t Want to Be a Frog written by Dev Petty and published by Dragonfly Books. This book was released on 2018-12-11 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hit book about a willful young frog with a serious identity crisis and his heard-it-all-before father is now available in paperback. Perfect for fans of Mo Willems’s Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! and Jon Klassen’s I Want My Hat Back! Frog wants to be anything but a slimy, wet frog. A cat, perhaps. Or a rabbit. An owl? But when a hungry wolf arrives—a wolf who HATES eating frogs—our hero decides that being himself isn’t so bad after all. In this very silly story with a sly message, told in hilarious dialogue between a feisty young frog and his heard-it-all-before father, young readers will identify with little Frog’s desire to be something different, while laughing along at his stubborn yet endearing schemes to prove himself right. And look for the hilarious sequels—I Don't Want to Be Big, There's Nothing to Do!, and I Don't Want to Go to Sleep. ★ "First-time author Petty’s dialogue between a frog father and his son makes its point about accepting one’s nature with a big grin. . . . The story might create similar gratitude in the minds of readers—or it might just make them giggle."—Publishers Weekly, STARRED REVIEW "A lively look at self-acceptance."—Kirkus "This amusing story ends with a laugh and a much more content frog."—School Library Journal "Silliness and deadpan humor combine into a hopping good story of being happy with who you are."—Booklist "A paean to self-acceptance wrapped in snappy dialogue and illustrated with richly colored comic paintings."—Wall Street Journal "Petty and Boldt provide just enough predictability to hook youngest readers, then deliver a delightful twist or two to create surprise and satisfaction—for both the green hero and the many fans he'll make with this book."—Shelf Awareness "This lighthearted exploration of identity will delight as a readaloud."—The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Book excerpt: "And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?' Then I said, 'Here I am! Send me.'" In his interpretation of Isaiah's vision of God and subsequent sending, the Anabaptist reformer Menno Simons perceived a pattern for all prophets, apostles, ministers, and preachers who are called and then sent out to spread the good news: "They did not assume the honor to themselves, as do the preachers of this world; but like Aaron, they were called by God. . . . They were brought by the Spirit of God, with pious hearts, into his service; they had always esteemed themselves unfit to serve the people of God or to stand forth in such a high and responsible station. . . . No one can serve in this high and holy office, conformably to God's will, except those whom the Lord of the vineyard has made worthy and fit by the spirit of his grace." In this volume of the Reformation Commentary on Scripture, Reformation scholar Jeff Fisher guides readers through a wealth of early-modern commentary on the first thirty-nine chapters of Isaiah. Readers will hear familiar voices and discover lesser-known figures from a diversity of theological traditions, including Lutherans, Reformed, Radicals, Anglicans, and Roman Catholics. Drawing on a variety of resources—including commentaries, sermons, treatises, and confessions—much of which appears here for the first time in English, this volume provides resources for contemporary preachers, enables scholars to better understand the depth and breadth of Reformation commentary, and seeks to help those who have been called to this task and those whom they serve.
