Book Kinetics and Mechanism for the Catalytic Oxidation of Sulfur Dioxide on Carbon in Aqueous Suspensions

Download or read book Kinetics and Mechanism for the Catalytic Oxidation of Sulfur Dioxide on Carbon in Aqueous Suspensions written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combustion-produced soot (carbonaceous) particles have been found to be efficient catalysts for SO2 oxidation, especially in the presence of liquid water. A kinetic study of the catalytic oxidation of SO2 on carbon particles suspended in solution has been carried out. The reaction was found to be first order with respect to the concentration of carbon particles, 0.69th order with respect to dissolved oxygen, between zero and second order with respect to S(IV) concentrations, and independent of the pH. Temperature studies were carried out, and an activation energy for this reaction was determined. A four-step mechanism is proposed for this carbon-catalyzed oxidation reaction.

Book Reaction of Hydrogen Sulfide with Oxygen in the Presence OfSulfite

Download or read book Reaction of Hydrogen Sulfide with Oxygen in the Presence OfSulfite written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commonly, abatement of hydrogen sulfide emissions from a geothermal powerplant requires that hydrogen sulfide dissolved in the cooling water be eliminated by chemical reaction. Oxidation by atmospheric oxygen is the preferred reaction, but requires a suitable catalyst. Nickel is the most potent and thereby cheapest catalyst for this purpose. One Mg/L nickel in the cooling water would allow 99% removal of hydrogen sulfide to be attained. A major drawback of catalytic air oxidation is that colloidal sulfur is a major reaction product; this causes rapid sludge accumulation and deposition of sulfur scale. The authors studied the kinetics and product distribution of the reaction of hydrogen sulfide with oxygen, catalyzed by nickel. Adding sodium sulfite to the solution completely suppresses formation of colloidal sulfur by converting it to thiosulfate. The oxidation reaction is an autocatalytic, free radical chain reaction. A rate expression for this reaction and a detailed reaction mechanism were developed. Nickel catalyzes the chain initiation step, and polysulfidoradical ions propagate the chains. Several complexes of iron and cobalt were also studied. Iron citrate and iron N-hydroxyEDT are the most effective iron based catalysts. Uncomplexed cobalt is as effective as nickel, but forms a precipitate of cobalt oxysulfide and is too expensive for practical use.

Book Kinetics and Mechanism in the Oxidation of Metal Vapors

Download or read book Kinetics and Mechanism in the Oxidation of Metal Vapors written by and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an effort to understand the kinetics and mechanisms of gas-phase metal oxidation reactions, experiments were continued in an apparatus which uses RF heating and laser radiation for the production of the metal vapor and time- of-flight mass spectrometry for product identification and quantitative measurements of reactants and products. Measurements were continued on the oxidation of thorium and uranium by molecular and atomic oxygen, as well as N2O and rate constants were measured.
