Book Analysis of Systems of Conservation Laws

Download or read book Analysis of Systems of Conservation Laws written by Heinrich Freistuhler and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-12-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems of partial differential equations reflecting conservation laws hold significant relevance to a variety of theoretical and practical applications, including compressible fluid flow, electromagnetism, elasticity theory, and other areas of continuum mechanics. This field of nonlinear analysis is currently experiencing a marked increase in successful research activity. The EU-TMR network "Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws held a summer program offering short courses on the Analysis of Systems of Conservation Laws. This book contains five of the self-contained short courses presented during this program by experts of international reputation. These courses, which address solutions to hyperbolic systems by the front tracking method, non-strictly hyperbolic conservation laws, hyperbolic-elliptic coupled systems, hyperbolic relaxation problems, the stability of nonlinear waves in viscous media and numerics, and more, represent the state of the art of most central aspects of the field.

Book Numerical Methods for Conservation Laws

Download or read book Numerical Methods for Conservation Laws written by LEVEQUE and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These notes developed from a course on the numerical solution of conservation laws first taught at the University of Washington in the fall of 1988 and then at ETH during the following spring. The overall emphasis is on studying the mathematical tools that are essential in de veloping, analyzing, and successfully using numerical methods for nonlinear systems of conservation laws, particularly for problems involving shock waves. A reasonable un derstanding of the mathematical structure of these equations and their solutions is first required, and Part I of these notes deals with this theory. Part II deals more directly with numerical methods, again with the emphasis on general tools that are of broad use. I have stressed the underlying ideas used in various classes of methods rather than present ing the most sophisticated methods in great detail. My aim was to provide a sufficient background that students could then approach the current research literature with the necessary tools and understanding. vVithout the wonders of TeX and LaTeX, these notes would never have been put together. The professional-looking results perhaps obscure the fact that these are indeed lecture notes. Some sections have been reworked several times by now, but others are still preliminary. I can only hope that the errors are not too blatant. Moreover, the breadth and depth of coverage was limited by the length of these courses, and some parts are rather sketchy.

Book Numerical Approximation of Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws

Download or read book Numerical Approximation of Hyperbolic Systems of Conservation Laws written by Edwige Godlewski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-08-28 with total page 846 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is devoted to the theory and approximation by finite volume methods of nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws in one or two space variables. It follows directly a previous publication on hyperbolic systems of conservation laws by the same authors. Since the earlier work concentrated on the mathematical theory of multidimensional scalar conservation laws, this book will focus on systems and the theoretical aspects which are needed in the applications, such as the solution of the Riemann problem and further insights into more sophisticated problems, with special attention to the system of gas dynamics. This new edition includes more examples such as MHD and shallow water, with an insight on multiphase flows. Additionally, the text includes source terms and well-balanced/asymptotic preserving schemes, introducing relaxation schemes and addressing problems related to resonance and discontinuous fluxes while adding details on the low Mach number situation.

Book Magnetohydrodynamics and Fluid Dynamics Action Principles and Conservation Laws

Download or read book Magnetohydrodynamics and Fluid Dynamics Action Principles and Conservation Laws written by Gary Webb and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text focuses on conservation laws in magnetohydrodynamics, gasdynamics and hydrodynamics. A grasp of new conservation laws is essential in fusion and space plasmas, as well as in geophysical fluid dynamics; they can be used to test numerical codes, or to reveal new aspects of the underlying physics, e.g., by identifying the time history of the fluid elements as an important key to understanding fluid vorticity or in investigating the stability of steady flows. The ten Galilean Lie point symmetries of the fundamental action discussed in this book give rise to the conservation of energy, momentum, angular momentum and center of mass conservation laws via Noether’s first theorem. The advected invariants are related to fluid relabeling symmetries – so-called diffeomorphisms associated with the Lagrangian map – and are obtained by applying the Euler-Poincare approach to Noether’s second theorem. The book discusses several variants of helicity including kinetic helicity, cross helicity, magnetic helicity, Ertels’ theorem and potential vorticity, the Hollman invariant, and the Godbillon Vey invariant. The book develops the non-canonical Hamiltonian approach to MHD using the non-canonical Poisson bracket, while also refining the multisymplectic approach to ideal MHD and obtaining novel nonlocal conservation laws. It also briefly discusses Anco and Bluman’s direct method for deriving conservation laws. A range of examples is used to illustrate topological invariants in MHD and fluid dynamics, including the Hopf invariant, the Calugareanu invariant, the Taylor magnetic helicity reconnection hypothesis for magnetic fields in highly conducting plasmas, and the magnetic helicity of Alfvén simple waves, MHD topological solitons, and the Parker Archimedean spiral magnetic field. The Lagrangian map is used to obtain a class of solutions for incompressible MHD. The Aharonov-Bohm interpretation of magnetic helicity and cross helicity is discussed. In closing, examples of magnetosonic N-waves are used to illustrate the role of the wave number and group velocity concepts for MHD waves. This self-contained and pedagogical guide to the fundamentals will benefit postgraduate-level newcomers and seasoned researchers alike.

Book Analytical Approaches to Multidimensional Balance Laws

Download or read book Analytical Approaches to Multidimensional Balance Laws written by Olga S. Rozanova and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is difficult to overestimate the importance of mathematical investigation of balance laws. They arise in many areas of physics, mechanics, chemistry, biology, social sciences. In this collective book we concentrate in particular on the equations of continuous medium and related to them. As a rule, they are very complicated in their primitive form. An important feature of such equations is a possible formation of singularities even in initially smooth solution within a finite time. The structure of the singularities can be very complex. A natural step in the approach to this problem is the transition, despite the three-dimensionality of our world, to spatially one-dimensional model. Significant progress has been achieved in this direction. Unfortunately, the methods of the one-dimensional theory, as usual, cannot be adapted to a case of many spatial variables. However, there are many attempts to deal with multidimensional problems. We would like to present some of them. All of the papers are written by outstanding experts, representing various schools in mathematics and mechanics. Each paper is organised as follows: it contains an elementary (as far as it is possible) introduction to a problem, a brief review of previously published results, and then original results of the authors are presented.
