Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes the best way to let one know what something is, is to let one know what it isn’t. Today’s typical academic book in eschatology provides the reader with a brief history of the various positions in the field followed by why certain positions should be considered the better options. This is not that book. Over the course of twelve chapters, six sequences will be presented from the three major sources in the New Testament regarding the subject, i.e., Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians, the Olivet Discourse, and John’s visions in Revelation. Through a careful reconciliation of those six sequences, Dr. Steven R. Bates will show that there’s only one sequence of end-times, which he has labeled “The Post-Armageddon, Premillennial Resurrection.” He asserts that had any other sequence of end-times been correct, whether pre-tribulationism, pre-wrath, mid-tribulationism, historic pre-millennialism, post-millennialism, a-millennialism, preterism, or any other sequence that one could possibly imagine, then the proponents of that postulation should be able to take the same six sequences from Scripture and reconcile them precisely with one another, sentence by sentence, and prove whatever sequence they propose. But, of course, no one will ever attempt such an endeavor because it’s theoretically impossible. Scripture’s six sequences only confirm one sequence, and it is the one which has been presented in The Sequence.

In the year since the CIA fully trained and then unleashed him, Mitch Rapp has been steadily working his way through a list of men, bullet by bullet. His latest target takes him to Paris but in the split second it takes the bullet to leave Rapp’s silenced pistol, everything changes. The tables have turned, and Rapp finds himself brutally outnumbered. In the same instant, he has become a liability. Operating on his own and outside the control of his handlers, it soon becomes clear that nothing is more dangerous than a wounded and cornered man. Because if anyone can survive and come out on top, no matter whom he must kill to get there, it’s Mitch Rapp. The stakes are higher than they’ve ever been as Mitch Rapp embarks on the journey that will turn him into America’s most deadly asset. The non-stop and realistic action proves that “Flynn is a master—maybe the master—of writing thriller novels in which the pages seem to turn themselves” (Bookreporter).

Book Cultural Control and Globalization in Asia

Download or read book Cultural Control and Globalization in Asia written by Laikwan Pang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a succint and well-written book introducing a truly interdisciplinary approach to the study of copyright and related issues in contemporary popular culture in relation to the current development of Asian cinema, and questions how copyright is appropriated to regulate culture. It examines the many meanings and practices pertaining to "copying" in cinema, demonstrating the dynamics between globalization’s desire for cultural control and cinema’s own resistance to such manipulation. Focusing on the cinema of China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and film 'piracy' in these countries, the book argues that ideas of cultural ownership and copyright are not as clear-cut as they may at first seem, and that copyright is used as a means through which cultural control is exercised by the cultural big business of the dominant power.

Book excerpt: Before he was the Academy Award-nominated director of The Last Picture Show, Peter Bogdanovich (1939–2022) interviewed some of cinema's great masters: Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, John Ford, and others. After becoming an acclaimed filmmaker himself, he gave countless interviews to the press about his own career. This volume collects thirteen of his best, most comprehensive, and most insightful interviews, many long out of print and several never before published in their entirety. They cover more than forty years of directing, with Bogdanovich talking candidly about his great triumphs, such as The Last Picture Show and What's Up, Doc?, and his overlooked gems, such as Daisy Miller and They All Laughed. Assembled by acclaimed critic Peter Tonguette, also author of a critical biography of Bogdanovich, these interviews demonstrate that Bogdanovich was not only one of America's finest filmmakers, but also one of its most eloquent when discussing film and his own remarkable movies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This impressive work is fair, balanced, critical and insightful."-Choice Contrary to the views of Alasdair MacIntyre and others who assert that modern Western morality is in disarray, torn by incommensurable moral views, John Reeder believes that there is much agreement about taking and saving lives. Many people might, in fact, agree on the various circumstances in which the death of a person constitutes a violation of the right to life, or that people have a right to our help, especially a right to life-saving aid. In Killing and Saving, Reeder analyzes five sorts of situations in which we are morally permitted or even obligated to take human life: e.g., when we repel an attacker who voluntarily "forfeits" the right to life; when we are confronted with "involuntary pursuit" or "material aggression;" when someone "yields" the right to life; when all will die if nothing is done, but some can be saved if others are killed; and when there is a "double effect" in which we take life as a foreseen but unintended consequence of attempt to achieve a greater good. Reeder argues that these (and closely related) categories account for many of our convictions ranging from abortion to infanticide, to starvation, to war. He also examines the concept of absolute or exceptionless right to life. Reeder draws on a number of moral views, from theological ethics to Enlightenment notions of natural rights or respect for rational creatures. He does not attempt to argue for a foundation for the right not to be killed and the right to be saved. Rather, he focuses on the content of the convictions themselves and argues that where disagreements remain, such as the case of abortion, they can be accounted for by the way the rights in question are explained and justified.

Shahrura (TM)s innovative interpretation of the Qura (TM)an offers groundbreaking new ideas, based on his conviction that centuries of historical Islam, including scholarship in the traditional Islamic religious sciences, have obscured or even obliterated the Qura (TM)ana (TM)s progressive and revolutionary message. That message is one that has endured through each period of human history in which Islam has existed, encouraging Muslims to apply the most contemporary perspective available to interpret the Qura (TM)ana (TM)s meaning.
