Book Catalogue of Australian Mosses

Download or read book Catalogue of Australian Mosses written by Heinar Streimann and published by CSIRO Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous taxonomic revisions and a substantial amount of additional floristic information have become available since the publication of Streimann & Curnow's Catalogue of Mosses of Australia and its External Territories in 1989. Monographs of Australian families and genera have included descriptions of many new taxa and the reduction of an even larger number of names to synonymy. Moreover, many taxa have been newly reported from Australia, while other Australian records have proved to be based on misidentifications or could not otherwise be confirmed. Taxonomic revisions from other regions have also resulted in many name changes among Australian taxa, and floristic research has provided numerous new State and Territory records.

Book Key to the Genera of Australian Macrolichens

Download or read book Key to the Genera of Australian Macrolichens written by Patrick M. McCarthy and published by CSIRO Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macrolichens are not necessarily large lichens. Instead, the term has been used traditionally for lichens other than crustose types, i.e. scaly, leafy or shrubby lichens, usually with discrete organs of attachment to the substratum; in other words, distinctly three-dimensional, in contrast to their closely appressed or immersed, two-dimensional relatives. This key to the genera of Australian macrolichens follows recently published guides to apothecial crusts and pyrenocarps. It covers all 135 genera of macrolichens known to occur in Australia, and illustrates two-thirds of them in full color. To ease identification, it uses mostly traits that are visible with the naked eye or a 10× hand lens, and for all genera it adds information on habitat, distribution within Australia, and literature references.

Book Catalogue of Australian Liverworts and Hornworts

Download or read book Catalogue of Australian Liverworts and Hornworts written by Patrick M. McCarthy and published by CSIRO Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 150 genera and 869 accepted species and infraspecific taxa of liverworts and hornworts are listed from the eight States and mainland Territories of Australia. Genera and species are listed alphabetically, and c. 1100 synonyms that have been applied to Australian specimens are inserted under the appropriate species name. Nomina nuda, names of uncertain application and those reported in error from Australia are appended. Each species entry is accompanied by a list of post-1982 literature that provides locality details, descriptions, identification keys and/or habitat information. This completes a modern trio of catalogues on the Australian lichen and bryophyte floras, together comprising more than 5,000 taxa and representing a significant component of the national biota.

Book Freshwater Cyanoprokaryota of North eastern Australia

Download or read book Freshwater Cyanoprokaryota of North eastern Australia written by Glenn McGregor and published by CSIRO Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cyanoprokaryotes (also known as cyanobacteria or blue-green algae) can form a significant component of benthic, periphytic and floating microphytic assemblages across a diverse range of habitats. They contribute to the productivity of aquatic ecosystems and, in some cases, provide the major carbon source that sustains aquatic food webs. Various members of the Oscillatoriales are known to have caused animal deaths and adversely affected human health. They are also recognised as being an important contributor to and consequence of ecosystem degradation. Their ubiquity in lakes, streams and rivers throughout much of the world, and their ability to form blooms or nuisance growths rapidly are of particular interest to scientists and water managers. Despite their importance, there are very few comprehensive regional accounts of cyanoprokaryote biodiversity in the scientific literature. This volume provides the first detailed account of the freshwater Oscillatoriales of north-eastern Australia. It includes keys, morphological and ecological data for 6 families, 27 genera and 122 species, and photomicrographs and original illustrations to enable the accurate identification of natural populations based on stable and recognisable characters observable with the aid of light microscopy. Distributional data are based on the extensive surveys carried out by the author at 253 localities near lakes, reservoirs, streams and rivers in Queensland and the Northern Territory as well as a review of the Australian phycological literature. Three species are newly described from the genera Leptolyngbya and Trichocoleus.
