Book Introduction to Energy in California

Download or read book Introduction to Energy in California written by Peter Asmus and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This key reference is a primer on energy in a state that continues to lead the world in finding sustainable solutions to one of the most pressing issues of the twenty-first century. While much public debate has focused on fossil fuels, this clearly written guide provides essential information on a broader range of issues--where our energy comes from, where future supplies will be found, and what new advances are being made in the area of renewable energy sources. Making the complex world of energy science and policy accessible to a wide audience, Peter Asmus examines the rich human history of California's earliest oil and hydroelectricity developments, explains the natural history underpinning the state's cornucopia of energy sources, covers such controversial sources as nuclear reactors and liquified natural gas, and more. Introduction to Energy in California includes: * Discussion of oil, nuclear power, coal, emerging alternative technologies, and renewable sources including geothermal, solar, wind, and hydropower * Analysis of the challenges and solutions facing California and the world on energy-related issues such as global climate change * Compelling case studies of corporations, governments, communities, and individuals working on today's most pressing energy questions * Color illustrations, useful maps, and clear graphics throughout

Book Building a Sustainable Energy Future

Download or read book Building a Sustainable Energy Future written by Steven C. Beering and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a print on demand edition of a hard to find publication. The U.S. faces a critical challenge to transform our current fossil fuel based energy economy to a sustainable energy economy. This transformation must be achieved to increase U.S. energy independence, enhance environ. stewardship and reduce energy and carbon intensity, and generate continued economic growth. These are the six topics in this report: 1: A comprehensive Fed. strategy. 2: Private and Fed. support for sustainable energy R&D is inadequate. 3: The U.S. energy economy does not value the environ. as a public good. 4: Human capital development in the sustainable energy sector is vital. 5: Limited internat. engagement inhibits progress. 6: Public support for sustainable energy is needed to get to a sustainable energy economy. Illustrations.

Book California s Energy Future

Download or read book California s Energy Future written by Deane N. Morris and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an abridgement of the results of a Rand study on energy policy issues facing California, more fully reported in Energy Alternatives for California: Paths to the Future, R-1793-CSA/RF, and summarized in some detail in an Executive Summary, R-1793/1-CSA/RF. The study is concerned with the problems of an uncertain future. These problems are extraordinarily complex and interwoven. Under conditions of rapid change, the full consequences of policy actions are difficult to predict and policy objectives are difficult to define. In addition, the relationships between state and federal actions are poorly understood, involving issues of equity among individuals and regions, and issues of environment, health, safety, and land use. Simple solutions should not be expected in such a policy area. However, a number of recommendations are presented because policy decisions should be made on the basis of the best information available when the political process demands they be made. The brief summary presented here necessarily omits most of the rationale for our conclusions and recommendations, as well as a number of subsidiary conclusions. The interested reader should consult the full report for these additional details. (Author).

Book Technological Learning in the Transition to a Low Carbon Energy System

Download or read book Technological Learning in the Transition to a Low Carbon Energy System written by Martin Junginger and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-11-22 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technological Learning in the Transition to a Low-Carbon Energy System: Conceptual Issues, Empirical Findings, and Use in Energy Modeling quantifies key trends and drivers of energy technologies deployed in the energy transition. It uses the experience curve tool to show how future cost reductions and cumulative deployment of these technologies may shape the future mix of the electricity, heat and transport sectors. The book explores experience curves in detail, including possible pitfalls, and demonstrates how to quantify the 'quality' of experience curves. It discusses how this tool is implemented in models and addresses methodological challenges and solutions. For each technology, current market trends, past cost reductions and underlying drivers, available experience curves, and future prospects are considered. Electricity, heat and transport sector models are explored in-depth to show how the future deployment of these technologies--and their associated costs--determine whether ambitious decarbonization climate targets can be reached - and at what costs. The book also addresses lessons and recommendations for policymakers, industry and academics, including key technologies requiring further policy support, and what scientific knowledge gaps remain for future research. Provides a comprehensive overview of trends and drivers for major energy technologies expected to play a role in the energy transition Delivers data on cost trends, helping readers gain insights on how competitive energy technologies may become, and why Reviews the use of learning curves in environmental impacts for lifecycle assessments and energy modeling Features social learning for cost modeling and technology diffusion, including where consumer preferences play a major role
