Download or read book India written by Arvind Panagariya and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2008-03-03 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of India's rapid growth in the past two decades has become a prominent focus in the public eye. A book that documents this unique and unprecedented surge, and addresses the issues raised by it, is sorely needed. Arvind Panagariya fills that gap with this sweeping, ambitious survey. India: The Emerging Giant comprehensively describes and analyzes India's economic development since its independence, as well as its prospects for the future. The author argues that India's growth experience since its independence is unique among developing countries and can be divided into four periods, each of which is marked by distinctive characteristics: the post-independence period, marked by liberal policies with regard to foreign trade and investment, the socialist period during which Indira Ghandi and her son blocked liberalization and industrial development, a period of stealthy liberalization, and the most recent, openly liberal period. Against this historical background, Panagariya addresses today's poverty and inequality, macroeconomic policies, microeconomic policies, and issues that bear upon India's previous growth experience and future growth prospects. These provide important insights and suggestions for reform that should change much of the current thinking on the current state of the Indian economy. India: The Emerging Giant will attract a wide variety of readers, including academic economists, policy makers, and research staff in national governments and international institutions. It should also serve as a core text in undergraduate and graduate courses that deal with Indias economic development and policies.

Book Macroeconomics and Markets in India

Download or read book Macroeconomics and Markets in India written by Ashima Goyal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India was one of the better performers after the global financial crisis, and has done well despite opening out in a period of great international volatility. This book asks if this was due to luck or to good management. How much did macroeconomic policy contribute and did it do as much as it could have, on a reform path that was not standard? Are there any lessons from the Indian experience for the rest of the world? Senior Indian policy economists, market participants, and researchers address these interesting and important questions. There are those who think financial reform has gone too fast - relaxations in foreign borrowing norms exposed firms to external shocks. Volatile capital flows impacted markets, although more liberalization of risk-sharing equity compared to debt flows, was effective in reducing domestic risk. But there are also those who think reform was too slow - choking financial development: many markets and instruments that could improve domestic financial intermediation and reduce risk were held back. Analysis suggests policy was able to find the correct timing, pace and combination of reforms and of caution, but improvement is always possible. Luck and inherent strengths of the economy helped absorb both policy mistakes and external shocks. This book was originally published as a special issue of Macroeconomics and Finance in Emerging Market Economies.

Book China vs America

Download or read book China vs America written by Oliver Letwin and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08-24 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's rise as a global superpower has completely reshaped the landscape of international politics. As the country's authoritarian regime becomes increasingly assertive on the world stage, the United States grows ever more hostile to its Asian rival. Repressive moves by China in Xinjiang and Hong Kong, military activities in the South China Sea and Western measures against Chinese companies have only exacerbated tensions. While the great powers of East and West battle over hegemony, the world is being led inexorably towards a new Cold War. During his time as a Cabinet minister attending National Security Council meetings, Oliver Letwin realised that there was no agreement among Western politicians and academics on how to conduct a peaceful long-term relationship with China. China vs America traces the contours of history, both ancient and modern, to explain how China has emerged as a challenger to American power in the twenty-first century and why this has created such uneasiness in the West. In this robust and controversial assessment, Letwin argues that the international rules-based order is completely ill-equipped to foster a positive relationship between China and the United States and that the global community must act now to correct the collision course these two behemoths are currently on before it's too late.

Book We Need to Talk About Kevin

Download or read book We Need to Talk About Kevin written by Lionel Shriver and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration for the film starring Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly, this resonant story of a mother’s unsettling quest to understand her teenage son’s deadly violence, her own ambivalence toward motherhood, and the explosive link between them remains terrifyingly prescient. Eva never really wanted to be a mother. And certainly not the mother of a boy who murdered seven of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker, and a much–adored teacher in a school shooting two days before his sixteenth birthday. Neither nature nor nurture exclusively shapes a child's character. But Eva was always uneasy with the sacrifices and social demotion of motherhood. Did her internalized dislike for her own son shape him into the killer he’s become? How much is her fault? Now, two years later, it is time for her to come to terms with Kevin’s horrific rampage, all in a series of startlingly direct correspondences with her estranged husband, Franklin. A piercing, unforgettable, and penetrating exploration of violence and responsibility, a book that the Boston Globe describes as “impossible to put down,” is a stunning examination of how tragedy affects a town, a marriage, and a family.

Book A Concise Handbook of the Indian Economy in the 21st Century Second Edition

Download or read book A Concise Handbook of the Indian Economy in the 21st Century Second Edition written by Ashima Goyal and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a phase of slow growth post Independence, the Indian economy has experienced significant changes since the mid-1980s as a result of major reforms. India’s growth story has defied established economic patterns and, in the process, created interesting paradoxes that have attracted global attention. In this new edition of A Concise Handbook of the Indian Economy in the 21st Century, select chapters from the original have been updated to present a brief but comprehensive overview of the Indian economy, contributing to a finer understanding of India’s economic development. The volume adopts a non-ideological and forward-looking approach to discuss important economic issues. It takes into account various social and political factors impacting the Indian economy, and compares the importance of external market factors with that of domestic reforms in India’s economic growth. The book aims to provide a deep understanding of the economy based on careful fact-based research, which is a pre-requisite for formulating pragmatic reforms necessary to achieve sustained and inclusive growth.
