Book Fiction in the Archives

Download or read book Fiction in the Archives written by Natalie Zemon Davis and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To receive a royal pardon in sixteenth-century France for certain kinds of homicide--unpremeditated, unintended, in self-defense, or otherwise excusable--a supplicant had to tell the king a story. These stories took the form of letters of remission, documents narrated to royal notaries by admitted offenders who, in effect, stated their case for pardon to the king. Thousands of such stories are found in French archives, providing precious evidence of the narrative skills and interpretive schemes of peasants and artisans as well as the well-born. This book, by one of the most acclaimed historians of our time, is a pioneering effort to us the tools of literary analysis to interpret archival texts: to show how people from different stations in life shaped the events of a crime into a story, and to compare their stories with those told by Renaissance authors not intended to judge the truth or falsity of the pardon narratives, but rather to refer to the techniques for crafting stories. A number of fascinating crime stories, often possessing Rabelaisian humor, are told in the course of the book, which consists of three long chapters. These chapters explore the French law of homicide, depictions of "hot anger" and self-defense, and the distinctive characteristics of women's stories of bloodshed. The book is illustrated with seven contemporary woodcuts and a facsimile of a letter of remission, with appendixes providing several other original documents. This volume is based on the Harry Camp Memorial Lectures given at Stanford University in 1986.

Book Shakespeare and the Jews

Download or read book Shakespeare and the Jews written by James Shapiro and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1996, James Shapiro's pathbreaking analysis of the portrayal of Jews in Elizabethan England challenged readers to recognize the significance of Jewish questions in Shakespeare's day. From accounts of Christians masquerading as Jews to fantasies of settling foreign Jews in Ireland, Shapiro's work delves deeply into the cultural insecurities of Elizabethans while illuminating Shakespeare's portrayal of Shylock in The Merchant of Venice. In a new preface, Shapiro reflects upon what he has learned about intolerance since the first publication of Shakespeare and the Jews.

Book Tudor Political Culture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dale Hoak
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2002-06-20
  • ISBN : 9780521520140
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book Tudor Political Culture written by Dale Hoak and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of twelve interdisciplinary essays on the ideas, images, and rituals of Tudor and early Stuart society. Through the exploitation of new manuscript material, or hitherto untapped artistic sources, the authors open up new perspectives on the ideas, institutions, and rituals of political society. The evidence of art and literature, and new techniques for the discovery of lost mentalities, are used to explore key aspects of Tudor political culture, including royal iconography, funereal symbolism, parliamentary elections, political vocabularies, kinship and family at court and in the country, and the architecture of urban authority. In his Introduction the editor uses the example of Henry VIII's historic break with Rome to suggest the seamless links between politics and political culture by presenting it against the backdrop of early-Tudor memories of Henry V, the cult of chivalry and the invasion of France (1513), and the pre-Reformation imagery of 'imperial' kingship.
