Book Tetracyclines in Biology Chemistry and Medicine

Download or read book Tetracyclines in Biology Chemistry and Medicine written by M. Nelson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-10-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tetracyclines have an illustrious history as therapeutic agents which dates back over half a century. Initially discovered as an antibiotic in 1947, the four ringed molecule has captured the fancy of chemists and biologists over the ensuing decades. Of further interest, as described in the chapter by George Armelagos, tetracyclines were already part of earlier cultures, 1500-1700 years ago, as revealed in traces of drug found in Sudanese Nubian mummies. The diversity of chapters which this book presents to the reader should illus trate the many disciplines which have examined and seen benefits from these fascinating natural molecules. From antibacterial to anti-inflammatory to anti autoimmunity to gene regulation, tetracyclines have been modified and redesigned for various novel properties. Some have called this molecule a biol ogist's dream because of its versatility, but others have seen it as a chemist's nightmare because of the synthetic chemistry challenges and "chameleon-like" properties (see the chapter by S. Schneider).

Book Congenital Scoliosis

Download or read book Congenital Scoliosis written by Elio Ascani and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of Progress in Spinal Pathology gathers a selection of papers presented at the 7th National Meeting of the Italian Scoliosis Research Group on Congenital Scoliosis. Up until 20 years ago congenital scoliosis was considered to be a practically benign disease characterized by a slight progression of spinal deformity and its prognosis was consequently good. This statement has recently turned out to be too optimistic. Deeper studies on spinal pathology have proved the existence of highly progressive forms of congenital scoliosis often associated with other diseases affecting the urinary and cardiac systems and above all the spinal cord. As a result a careful evaluation of the patient is necessary before any type of surgical treatment may be initiated, in order to reduce the risk of irreversible lesions to the spinal cord to a minimum. This volume encompasses all clinical and diagnostic aspects of the subject including the latest achievements and techniques of treatment. Furthermore it is completed by eminent studies on subjects of great interest such as imperfect osteogenesis, cervical and cranial abnormalities in von Recklinghausen's disease, experimental comparative analysis of different types of instrumentation used in the surgical treatment of vertebral fractures, rib resection following vertebral arthrodesis for cases of thoracic idiopathic scoliosis, and anesthesia in vertebral surgery for spinal muscle atrophy.

Book Effects of Nicotine on Biological Systems

Download or read book Effects of Nicotine on Biological Systems written by Adlkofer and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of its scientific activities, the German Research Council on Smoking and Health regularly provides opportunities for scientists to discuss progress in the field of nicotine research. In this context, the Research Council sponsored a Satellite Symposium in Hamburg, June 28-30, 1990 entitled "Effects of Nicotine on Biological Systems". This meeting was held in conjunction with the XIth International Congress of Pharmacology in Amsterdam and follows the first Satellite Symposium on Nicotine which was convened in Brisbane, Australia in 1987. The aim of these conferences has been to discuss state of the art research on the pharmacology and toxicology of nicotine and its metabolites and to integrate this information to help define nicotinic actions on the central and peripheral nervous system as well as to evaluate health or behavioral effects associated with use of this alkaloid. Furthermore, at this conference, potential therapeutic benefits of nicotine for certain disease states were discussed. Smoking and the health effects of smoking were dealt with only as far as they could not be separated from the effects of nicotine. This volume contains the lectures presented at the symposium and illustrates that knowledge of nicotine has advanced considerably in recent years with regard to mechanisms of its actions. Despite such progress however, it is apparent that a' large number of questions remain unanswered, especially in the light of new insight into cellular and molecular mechanisms which can be affected by nicotine.

Download or read book Carotenoids written by Hanspeter Pfander and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Britton, Synnl/Jve Liaaen-Jensen and Hanspeter Pfander This book, Volume 2 in the series Carotenoids, is the first book to be published that is devoted entirely to the total synthesis of carotenoids, but it is timely in view of the rapid development and the growing diversification of the carotenoid field. The 1971 Carotenoids book contained a major chapter of 250 pages on total synthesis by H. Mayer and O. Isler. That comprehensive and authoritative review described systematically the construction of many synthons and the synthesis of many natural and unnatural carotenoids and related compounds. Twenty five years on, that chapter remains an essential reference work and source of information, with its extensive collection of tabulated data and lists of references to the original literature. Surveys of progress since 1971 have been presented at the IUPAC International Symposia on Carotenoids and are included in the published proceedings of these symposia. The history of major publications in the carotenoid field, leading to the development of this series, was outlined in the preface to the series published in Vol. IA. The general philo sophy outlined in that preface, with emphasis on practical guidance and the inclusion of worked examples of some of the most useful procedures, is maintained in Vol. 2. In kceping with this philosophy, Vol. 2 is not intended to be an exhaustive review of the literature, but is planned as a practical book, as well as a source of information.

  • Author : R. Chalmers
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9400957785

Download or read book Organic Acids in Man written by R. Chalmers and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 531 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writing of this book was prompted by the need for a comprehensive of current data on organic acids suitable for both newcomers and collection established researchers in this field. The only previous text of the kind was the excellent review by Nordmann and Nordmann (1961), and at that time the main method of analysis was paper chromatography with liquid chromatography being used in a limited way. Only three diseases in which organic acids accumulate were known (primary hyperoxaluria, phenylketonuria and alcaptonuria). Since then, with the development of gas chromatography and mass spectrometry, and the further development ofliquid chromatography, knowledge concerning the nature of the organic acids in physiological fluids has been greatly extended. At the same time, the number of organic acidurias has increased dramatically, there being now some 40-50 known diseases of this type. During the past 15 years or so, there have been several reviews, dealing with either specific diseases or groups of diseases (Gompertz, 1972, 1974; Tanaka, 1975), or presenting the proceedings of symposia (Stern and Toothill, 1972) or workshops (Marner et al. , 1974). This present text deals comprehensively and in detail with the organic acids in human physiological fluids in health and in disease states, and is particularly concerned with the methods necessary for their separation, determination and indentification.

Book Phytochemical Methods

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jeffrey B. Harborne
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 9400959214

Download or read book Phytochemical Methods written by Jeffrey B. Harborne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are many books available on methods of organic and biochemical analysis, the majority are either primarily concerned with the application of a particular technique (e.g. paper chromatography) or have been written for an audience of chemists or for biochemists work ing mainly with animaltissues. Thus, no simple guide to modern metho ds of plant analysis exists and the purpose of the present volume is to fill this gap. It is primarily intended for students in the plant sciences, who have a botanical or a general biological background. It should also be of value to students in biochemistry, pharmacognosy, food science and 'natural products' organic chemistry. Most books on chromatography, while admirably covering the needs of research workers, tend to overwhelm the student with long lists of solvent systems and spray reagents that can be applied to each class of organic constituent. The intention here is to simplify the situation by listing only a few specially recommended techniques that have wide currency in phytochemical laboratories. Sufficient details are provided to allow the student to use the techniques for themselves and most sections contain some introductory practical experiments which can be used in classwork.
