Download or read book Beyond Thalassocracies written by Evi Gorogianni and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Thalassocracies aims to evaluate and rethink the manner in which archaeologists approach, understand, and analyze the various processes associated with culture change connected to interregional contact, using as a test case the world of the Aegean during the Late Bronze Age (c. 1600–1100 BC). The 14 chapters compare and contrast various aspects of the phenomena of Minoanisation and Mycenaeanisation, both of which share the basic underlying defining feature of material culture change in communities around the Aegean. This change was driven by trends manifesting themselves in the dominant palatial communities of each period of the Bronze Age. Over the past decade, our understanding of how these processes developed and functioned has changed considerably. Whereas current discussions on Minoanisation have already been informed by more recent theoretical trends, especially in material culture studies and post‐colonial theory, the process of Mycenaeanisation is still very much conceptualized along traditional lines of explanation. Since these phenomena occurred in chronological sequence, it makes sense that any reappraisal of their nature and significance should target those regions of the Aegean basin that were affected by both processes, highlighting their similarities and differences. Thus, in the present volume we focus on the southern and eastern Aegean, in particular the Cyclades, Dodecanese, and the north-eastern Aegean islands.

Book Epigraphy and the Greek Historian

Download or read book Epigraphy and the Greek Historian written by Craig Cooper and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-09-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epigraphy is a method of inferring and analyzing historical data by means of inscriptions found on ancient artifacts such as stones, coins, and statues. It has proven indispensable for archaeologists and classicists, and has considerable potential for the study of ancient history at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Epigraphy and the Greek Historian is a collection of essays that explore various ways in which inscriptions can help students reconstruct and understand Greek History. In order to engage with the study of epigraphy, this collection is divided into two parts, Athens and Athens from the outside. The contributors maintain the importance of epigraphy, arguing that, in some cases, inscriptions are the only tools we have to recover the local history of places that stand outside the main focus of ancient literary sources, which are often frustratingly Athenocentric. Ideally, the historian uses both inscriptions and literary sources to make plausible inferences and thereby weave together the disconnected threads of the past into a connected and persuasive narrative. Epigraphy and the Greek Historian is a comprehensive examination of epigraphy and a timely resource for students and scholars involved in the study of ancient history.

Book Mediterranean Voyages

Download or read book Mediterranean Voyages written by Helen Dawson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islands are ideal case studies for exploring social connectivity, episodes of colonisation, abandonment, and alternating phases of cultural interaction and isolation. Their societies display different attitudes toward the land and the sea, which in turn cast light on group identities. This volume advances theoretical discussions of island archaeology by offering a comparative study of the archaeology of colonisation, abandonment, and resettlement of the Mediterranean islands in prehistory. This comparative and thematic study encourages anthropological reflections on the archaeology of the islands, ultimately focusing on people rather than geographical units, and specifically on the relations between islanders, mainlanders, and the creation of islander identities. This volume has significance for scholars interested in Mediterranean archaeology, as well as those interested more broadly in colonisation and abandonment.

Book BUY A GAIL KEO DOLL air Assault

Download or read book BUY A GAIL KEO DOLL air Assault written by Rain S Chetdav and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-03 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Japanese new-fangled regime publicized itself as a self-sufficient, self-sustaining entity, freed from big brother USA and the United Nations' sphere of influence, asserting itself as anti-big brother USA and realigning its sphere of influence with North Korea and China. A more severe and brutal blow to big brother USA and the Marshal Plan, Taiwan had effectively expelled the US-UN forces from its soil; Taipei, its military paralleled to that of the Japanese, declared itself free from big brother USA and UN's supremacy, authority and sphere of influence. The Chinese had productively formed the Communist Asian Pack with Japan and Taiwan; the three communist countries and communist North Korea, forming the CAP, were strongly behind Pyongyang and its passion of turning South Korea into a communist country and reuniting the North and South to outline Seoul and Pyongyang into one Korea--a Communist Korea; once Seoul fell to Pyongyang, China had guaranteed Taipei 150-years of independence--free from China's sphere of influence and authoritarianism. That was what the Taiwanese have wanted for years, independence from mainland China, a package that was too good to pass on, a promise that big brother USA-UN cannot proffer. The Korean War2's sonata, more rapidly than the speed of light, forced its resonance into us with the proverbial reverberations of fighter air assaults, howitzer artillery, helicopter gunships, rocket-propelled grenades, machineguns, small arm cannons, revolvers and rifles--boom, thump-swish, ka-boom, bang-bang-bang-bang-bang, papa-papa-papa!...and on and on and on.

I went by the field of the lazy man, and by the vineyard of the man devoid of understanding.
