Book excerpt: The life and times of the Smart Wife--feminized digital assistants who are friendly and sometimes flirty, occasionally glitchy but perpetually available. Meet the Smart Wife--at your service, an eclectic collection of feminized AI, robotic, and smart devices. This digital assistant is friendly and sometimes flirty, docile and efficient, occasionally glitchy but perpetually available. She might go by Siri, or Alexa, or inhabit Google Home. She can keep us company, order groceries, vacuum the floor, turn out the lights. A Japanese digital voice assistant--a virtual anime hologram named Hikari Azuma--sends her "master" helpful messages during the day; an American sexbot named Roxxxy takes on other kinds of household chores. In The Smart Wife, Yolande Strengers and Jenny Kennedy examine the emergence of digital devices that carry out "wifework"--domestic responsibilities that have traditionally fallen to (human) wives. They show that the principal prototype for these virtual helpers--designed in male-dominated industries--is the 1950s housewife: white, middle class, heteronormative, and nurturing, with a spick-and-span home. It's time, they say, to give the Smart Wife a reboot. What's wrong with preferring domestic assistants with feminine personalities? We like our assistants to conform to gender stereotypes--so what? For one thing, Strengers and Kennedy remind us, the design of gendered devices re-inscribes those outdated and unfounded stereotypes. Advanced technology is taking us backwards on gender equity. Strengers and Kennedy offer a Smart Wife "manifesta," proposing a rebooted Smart Wife that would promote a revaluing of femininity in society in all her glorious diversity.

Book excerpt: In this powerful portrait of the self-making of an artist, Willa Cather created one of her most extraordinary heroines. Thea Kronborg, a minister's daughter in a provincial Colorado town, seems destined from childhood for a place in the wider world. But as her path to the world stage leads her ever farther from the humble town she can't forget and from the man she can't afford to love, Thea learns that her exceptional musical talent and fierce ambition are not enough. It is in the solitude of a tiny rock chamber high in the side of an Arizona cliff--"a cleft in the heart of the world"--that Thea comes face to face with her own dreams and desires, stripped clean by the haunting purity of the ruined cliff dwellings and inspired by the whisperings of their ancient dust. Here she finds the courage to seize her future and to use her gifts to catch "the shining, elusive element that is life itself--life hurrying past us and running away, too strong to stop, too sweet to lose." In prose as shimmering and piercingly true as the light in a desert canyon, Cather takes us into the heart of a woman coming to know her deepest self.

Book True Compass

Download or read book True Compass written by Edward M. Kennedy and published by Twelve. This book was released on 2009-12-25 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark autobiography, five years in the making, Senator Edward M. Kennedy tells his extraordinary personal story--of his legendary family, politics, and fifty years at the center of national events. TRUE COMPASS The youngest of nine children born to Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, he came of age among siblings from whom much was expected. As a young man, he played a key role in the presidential campaign of his brother John F. Kennedy, recounted here in loving detail. In 1962 he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he began a fascinating political education and became a legislator. In this historic memoir, Ted Kennedy takes us inside his family, re-creating life with his parents and brothers and explaining their profound impact on him. For the first time, he describes his heartbreak and years of struggle in the wake of their deaths. Through it all, he describes his work in the Senate on the major issues of our time--civil rights, Vietnam, Watergate, the quest for peace in Northern Ireland--and the cause of his life: improved health care for all Americans, a fight influenced by his own experiences in hospitals. His life has been marked by tragedy and perseverance, a love of family, and an abiding faith. There have been controversies, too, and Kennedy addresses them with unprecedented candor. At midlife, embattled and uncertain if he would ever fall in love again, he met the woman who changed his life, Victoria Reggie Kennedy. Facing a tough reelection campaign against an aggressive challenger named Mitt Romney, Kennedy found a new voice and began one of the great third acts in American politics, sponsoring major legislation, standing up for liberal principles, and making the pivotal endorsement of Barack Obama for president. Hundreds of books have been written about the Kennedys. TRUE COMPASS will endure as the definitive account from a member of America's most heralded family, an inspiring legacy to readers and to history, and a deeply moving story of a life like no other.

Book The Song of the Lark

Download or read book The Song of the Lark written by Willa Cather and published by . This book was released on 1915 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novelist and short-story writer, Willa Cather is today widely regarded as one of the foremost American authors of the twentieth century. Particularly renowned for the memorable women she created for such works as My Antonia and O Pioneers!, she pens the portrait of another formidable character in The Song of the Lark. This, her third novel, traces the struggle of the woman as artist in an era when a woman's role was far more rigidly defined than it is today. The prototype for the main character as a child and adolescent was Cather herself, while a leading Wagnerian soprano at the Metropolitan Opera (Olive Fremstad) became the model for Thea Kronborg, the singer who defies the limitations placed on women of her time and social station to become an international opera star. A coming-of-age-novel, important for the issues of gender and class that it explores, The Song of the Lark is one of Cather's most popular and lyrical works. Book jacket.

It’s a little shaky at first, but Ira, Maurie, and Mary seem to like him and to be impressed that he went to Brown. But then they ask him—hypothetically—if he’d rather sleep with a dog or his mother. And that’s when things get really strange. (3 men, 1 woman.) DOG? by Kara Lee Corthron. A man being interviewed as a prospective dog-sitter is stunned when the dog turns out to be a young woman pretending to be a dog. He doesn’t want to get involved, but then it seems this may be some role-playing game. Or is it something else? Just what’s going on here? (2 men, 1 woman.) FOR UNTO US by Stephen Kaplan. Mary and Joseph are a pair of 5-year-olds playing with a doll. But before they can start, they’ll need to debate gender stereotypes, the relative merits of Christmas versus Hanukkah, the nature of God, and what it means to have two dads. (1 man, 1 woman.) HAPPENSTANCE by Craig Pospisil. First off, Cassidy is definitely not crazy. Secondly, she is totally over her ex-boyfriend. So when she runs into Abe at a coffee shop, she totally doesn’t think about what happened between them. Or what could happen. And she totally didn’t forget that her husband Martin is sitting right next to her. Totally. (2 men, 2 women.) JACK by Melissa Ross. Maggie and George are divorced. It’s been six months, and they’re dating other people. But they’re in the middle of a huge argument outside the dog run in the park about why George didn’t call Maggie about an emergency involving Jack, the dog they adopted together at the start of their relationship. (1 man, 1 woman.) LINUS AND MURRAY by Leah Nanako Winkler. Linus is a cat who’s seen it all. Murray is a young dog, who’s newly adopted and neurotic. They share a yard, but can they get past the antiquated idea that they are mortal enemies and become friends? Can they be more than friends? (2 men.) THE PRESENTATION by Lia Romeo. Samantha, polished and professional, finishes a presentation on sexual harassment in the workplace and she opens the floor up for questions. Unfortunately, the three Vikings she’s been addressing haven’t gotten the point of her talk, especially where it concerns not raping. (3 men, 1 woman.) THE SCULPTURE GALLERY by Aoise Stratford. As Kennedy, a young woman in an art gallery, sketches lifelike sculptures of women, a man several years her senior strikes up a conversation. Jack, trading on their shared love and understanding of art, breaks down Kennedy’s barriers until she—and we—are no longer able to tell where the objectified artist’s subject begins and the person ends. (1 man, 2 women.) SHOCK AND AWWW by Dan Castellaneta and Deb Lacusta. Stewart and Patrick are roommates who agreed: No pets. So when Stewart comes home to find Patrick cuddling a kitten named Mr. Squiggy, he says the cat has to go. But Mr. Squiggy isn’t going anywhere. In fact, he’s already taken over Patrick’s mind. (2 men.) WAITING FOR THE MATINEE by Eric Coble. “Nothing to be done.” Estelle and Vivian are waiting for a show to begin, but nothing happens. They’ve read the whole program while waiting. But nothing happens. Should they go? Should they stay? Should they unwrap their candy? (2 women.)

Book Fairy Tale Interrupted

Download or read book Fairy Tale Interrupted written by RoseMarie Terenzio and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-01-24 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working Girl meets What Remains in this New York Times bestselling, behind-the-scenes story of an unlikely friendship between America’s favorite First Son, John F. Kennedy Jr. and his personal assistant, a blue-collar girl from the Bronx. Featured in the documentary I Am JFK Jr.! From the moment RoseMarie Terenzio unleashed her Italian temper on the entitled nuisance commandeering her office in a downtown New York PR firm, an unlikely friendship bloomed between the blue-collar girl from the Bronx and John F. Kennedy Jr. Many books have sought to capture John F. Kennedy Jr.’s life. None has been as intimate or as honest as Fairy Tale Interrupted. Recalling the adventure of working as his executive assistant for five years, RoseMarie portrays the man behind the icon—patient, protective, surprisingly goofy, occasionally thoughtless and self-involved, yet capable of extraordinary generosity and kindness. She reveals how he dealt with dating, politics, and the paparazzi, and describes life behind the scenes at George magazine. Captured here are her memories of Carolyn Bessette, how she orchestrated the ultra-secretive planning of John and Carolyn’s wedding on Cumberland Island—and the heartbreak of their deaths on July 16, 1999, after which RoseMarie’s whole world came crashing down around her. Only now does she feel she can tell her story in a book that stands as “a fitting personal tribute to a unique boss . . . deliriously fun and entertaining” (Kirkus Reviews).

Book JFK and Mary Meyer A Love Story

Download or read book JFK and Mary Meyer A Love Story written by Jesse Kornbluth and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A breezy, tantalizing view of the woman who, through wiles and a complete lack of scruples, briefly transcended the role of presidential mistress—and may have paid for it with her life.” —The New York Times John F. Kennedy said he needed sex every three days or he got a headache. In the White House, he never had a headache. Kennedy met Mary Pinchot in 1935, when he was eighteen and she was sixteen. Twenty years later, when she was living in Virginia and married to Cord Meyer, a high-ranking CIA official, she was Jack and Jackie Kennedy’s next-door neighbor. In 1962, she was an artist, divorced, living in Washington—and Kennedy’s first serious romance. Mary Pinchot Meyer was more than a bedmate. She was Kennedy’s beacon light: his sole female adviser, spending mornings in the Oval Office, and, at night, discussing issues. After the 1964 election, Kennedy said, he would divorce Jackie and marry her. After the assassination, Mary didn’t believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone, and she shared that view, loudly and often, in Washington’s most elite circles. Her ex-husband urged her to be silent, but when the report of the Warren Commission was released, she was even more loudly critical. On October 10, 1964, two days before her forty-forth birthday, as she walked in Georgetown, a man shot her in the head and the heart. That night, Mary's best friend called her sister. “Mary had a diary,” she said. “Get it.” The diary was filled with sketches, notes for paintings—and ten pages about an affair with an unnamed lover. Her sister burned it. In JFK and Mary Meyer: A Love Story, Jesse Kornbluth recreates the diary Mary might have written. Working from a timeline of Kennedy’s presidency and every documented account of their public relationship, he has written a high-octane thriller that tracks this secret, doomed romance—and invites readers to solve Mary’s murder.
