Book Improving a Country s Education

Download or read book Improving a Country s Education written by Nuno Crato and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book compares and contrasts the results of international student assessments in ten countries. The OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) released the results of its 2018 assessment in December 2019. This book reflects the debates that typically follow the release of these results and focuses on the causes of differences between countries. Such causes include continuous decline in one country, improvement combined with increasing internal inequalities in another country, or rapid improvement in spite of an outdated curriculum in yet another. In addition, the book discusses a number of general questions: Is knowledge outdated? Are computers taking over and replacing teachers? Are schools killing creativity? Are we adequately preparing the next generation? Are schools failing to educate our kids? The book starts out with a summary of PISA’s evolution and PISA results, and an explanation of the major factors that play a role in changes in countries’ results. The next ten chapters are devoted to ten specific countries, offering a summary of data and an explanation of the major drives for changes in education results for each one. Each chapter includes a short description of the country’s educational system as well as the impact of PISA and other ILSA studies on the country’s educational policies. The chapters also include a timeline of policy measures and main hallmarks of the country’s educational evolution, discussing the impact of these measures on its PISA results. A final reference chapter explains what PISA is, what it measures and how. While highlighting the 2018 results, the book also takes into consideration previous results, as well as long-term initiatives. This book gathers the contribution of well-known and respected experts in the field. Specialists such as Eric Hanushek, for the US, Tim Oates, for England, Montse Gomendio, for Spain, Gunda Tire, for Estonia, and all other contributors draw on their vast experience and statistical analysis expertise to draw a set of rich country lessons and recommendations that are invaluable for all of those who care about improving a country’s education system.

Book Guided Inquiry Goes Global

Download or read book Guided Inquiry Goes Global written by Lee FitzGerald and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book places guided inquiry in the context of curricular and technological change and provides guidelines for building the long-term culture and capacity for effective inquiry learning in schools. Across the world's education systems, many schools are moving to inquiry learning. However, making inquiry learning work requires effective collaboration in schools and resolving the conflict between teaching 21st-century skills while also adhering to content-heavy syllabuses and meeting accountability standards. In Guided Inquiry Goes Global: Evidence-Based Practice In Action, author Lee FitzGerald—a teacher librarian with 25 years' experience, in both primary and secondary schools, and who has experimented with the developing practice for more than 10 years—places guided inquiry (GI) in an international context of curricular and technological change. She provides an essential and succinct background on GI; explains where it fits in the curriculum; and provides practical guidance in creating GI tasks, operating GI tasks in real-world teaching situations, and overcoming barriers to successful implementation of guided inquiry. You'll gain insight into the evidence for the effectiveness of GI, understand how students interpret and use the GI process, grasp the critical teaching role of the teacher librarian in GI, and appreciate the value of collaboration in making GI work for you and your students. The final chapters of the book identify ways of dealing with common "roadblocks" along the path to acceptance of GI that were developed from interviews with practicing teacher librarians in Australia, France, Sweden, and the United States.

Download or read book PISA Power and Policy written by Heinz-Dieter Meyer and published by Symposium Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past ten years the PISA assessment has risen to strategic prominence in the international education policy discourse. Sponsored, organized and administered by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), PISA seems well on its way to being institutionalized as the main engine in the global accountability regime. The goal of this book is to problematize this development and PISA as an institution-building force in global education. It scrutinizes the role of PISA in the emerging regime of global educational governance and questions the presumption that the quality of a nation’s school system can be evaluated through a standardized assessment that is insensitive to the world’s vast cultural and institutional diversity. The book raises the question of whether PISA’s dominance in the global educational discourse runs the risk of engendering an unprecedented process of worldwide educational standardization for the sake of hitching schools more tightly to the bandwagon of economic efficiency, while sacrificing their role to prepare students for independent thinking and civic participation.
