Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They call me Angel of Death, but my name is Nisha Blake. I am Shepherdstown's living urban legend. My life, a tale of the macabre. People avoid me like the plague. Well, everyone but my friends. They don't see the Angel of Death when they look at me. They see poor, broken Nisha-the bully victim, suffering from vicious night terrors and vivid hallucinations. Things take a turn for the worse when Blaze shows up. He's a too hot, tattooed, bad-ass MMA fighter from London, hell-bent on getting to know me. Since he walked into my miserable life, my hallucinations graduated to a point where I can no longer differentiate between fiction and reality. I am insane. Broken beyond repair. Or so I think until- I uncover a secret from the past-a link between all the deaths, my hallucinations, and my night terrors. It's then I understand I'm not the Angel of Death. I am something else. Someone else.

Book Polish Migrants in European Film 1918 2017

Download or read book Polish Migrants in European Film 1918 2017 written by Kris Van Heuckelom and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the representation of international migration on screen and how it has gained prominence and salience in European filmmaking over the past 100 years. Using Polish migration as a key example due to its long-standing cultural resonance across the continent, this book moves beyond a director-oriented approach and beyond the dominant focus on postcolonial migrant cinemas. It succeeds in being both transnational and longitudinal by including a diverse corpus of more than 150 films from some twenty different countries, of which Roman Polański’s The Tenant, Jean-Luc Godard’s Passion and Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Trois couleurs: Blanc are the best-known examples. Engaging with contemporary debates on modernisation and Europeanisation, the author proposes the notion of “close Otherness” to delineate the liminal position of fictional characters with a Polish background. Polish Migrants in European Film 1918-2017 takes the reader through a wide range of genres, from interwar musicals to Cold War defection films; from communist-era exile right up to the contemporary moment. It is suitable for scholars interested in European or Slavic studies, as well as anyone who is interested in topics such as identity construction, ethnic representation, East-West cultural exchanges and transnationalism.

Book Games Prisoners Play

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marek M. Kaminski
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2018-06-05
  • ISBN : 0691187142
  • Pages : 215 pages

Download or read book Games Prisoners Play written by Marek M. Kaminski and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 11, 1985, a van was pulled over in Warsaw for a routine traffic check that turned out to be anything but routine. Inside was Marek Kaminski, a Warsaw University student who also ran an underground press for Solidarity. The police discovered illegal books in the vehicle, and in a matter of hours five secret police escorted Kaminski to jail. A sociology and mathematics major one day, Kaminski was the next a political prisoner trying to adjust to a bizarre and dangerous new world. This remarkable book represents his attempts to understand that world. As a coping strategy until he won his freedom half a year later by faking serious illness, Kaminski took clandestine notes on prison subculture. Much later, he discovered the key to unlocking that culture--game theory. Prison first appeared an irrational world of unpredictable violence and arbitrary codes of conduct. But as Kaminski shows in riveting detail, prisoners, to survive and prosper, have to master strategic decision-making. A clever move can shorten a sentence; a bad decision can lead to rape, beating, or social isolation. Much of the confusion in interpreting prison behavior, he argues, arises from a failure to understand that inmates are driven not by pathological emotion but by predictable and rational calculations. Kaminski presents unsparing accounts of initiation rituals, secret codes, caste structures, prison sex, self-injuries, and of the humor that makes this brutal world more bearable. This is a work of unusual power, originality, and eloquence, with implications for understanding human behavior far beyond the walls of one Polish prison.

Book In Translation Reflections Refractions Transformations

Download or read book In Translation Reflections Refractions Transformations written by Paul St-Pierre and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007-05-16 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With contributions by researchers from India, Europe, North America and the Caribbean, In Translation – Reflections, refractions, transformations touches on questions of method and on topics – including copyright, cultural hybridity, globalization, identity construction, and minority languages – which are important for the disciplinary development of translation studies but also of interest to other fields as well, most notably comparative literature, cultural studies and world literature. The volume provides a forum for new voices to be heard alongside those of well-established scholars and for current concerns to express themselves, often focusing on practices in areas of the world other than Europe or North America, which have until now tended to dominate the field. Acknowledging difference and celebrating it, the contributions conceive of translation as a process which reconstitutes and transforms, which brings renewal and growth, an interaction in a new context, a new reading, a new writing.

Book Geoecology of Landscape Dynamics

Download or read book Geoecology of Landscape Dynamics written by Seema Sahdev and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the ecological indicators of landscape dynamics in the context of geographical landscape integration. Landscape dynamics depicts every change that occurs in the physical, biological, and cognitive assets of a landscape. To understand and interpret the complex physical, biological, and cognitive phenomena of landscapes, it is necessary to operate conceptually and practically on a broad range of spatial and temporal scales. Rapid land use changes have become a concern to environmentalists and planners because of their impacts on the natural ecosystem, which further determines socioeconomic dynamics. In this regard, the book discusses case studies that share new insights into how landscape patterns and processes impact small creatures, and how small creatures in turn influence landscape structure and composition. In turn, the relevant aspects of land use and land cover dynamics are covered, and the multi-faceted relationship between the substrata and ecological community is highlighted. The book is unique in its focus on the application of spatial informatics such as automatic building extraction from high-resolution imagery; a soil resource inventory for meeting the challenges of land degradation; hydrological modeling; the temporal variation analysis of glacier area and the identification and mapping of glacial lakes; morphometric analysis of river basins; and the monitoring and modeling of urban sprawl, among other features.
