Download or read book Tangled Up in Blue written by Rosa Brooks and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named one of the best nonfiction books of the year by The Washington Post “Tangled Up in Blue is a wonderfully insightful book that provides a lens to critically analyze urban policing and a road map for how our most dispossessed citizens may better relate to those sworn to protect and serve.” —The Washington Post “Remarkable . . . Brooks has produced an engaging page-turner that also outlines many broadly applicable lessons and sensible policy reforms.” —Foreign Affairs Journalist and law professor Rosa Brooks goes beyond the "blue wall of silence" in this radical inside examination of American policing In her forties, with two children, a spouse, a dog, a mortgage, and a full-time job as a tenured law professor at Georgetown University, Rosa Brooks decided to become a cop. A liberal academic and journalist with an enduring interest in law's troubled relationship with violence, Brooks wanted the kind of insider experience that would help her understand how police officers make sense of their world—and whether that world can be changed. In 2015, against the advice of everyone she knew, she applied to become a sworn, armed reserve police officer with the Washington, DC, Metropolitan Police Department. Then as now, police violence was constantly in the news. The Black Lives Matter movement was gaining momentum, protests wracked America's cities, and each day brought more stories of cruel, corrupt cops, police violence, and the racial disparities that mar our criminal justice system. Lines were being drawn, and people were taking sides. But as Brooks made her way through the police academy and began work as a patrol officer in the poorest, most crime-ridden neighborhoods of the nation's capital, she found a reality far more complex than the headlines suggested. In Tangled Up in Blue, Brooks recounts her experiences inside the usually closed world of policing. From street shootings and domestic violence calls to the behind-the-scenes police work during Donald Trump's 2016 presidential inauguration, Brooks presents a revelatory account of what it's like inside the "blue wall of silence." She issues an urgent call for new laws and institutions, and argues that in a nation increasingly divided by race, class, ethnicity, geography, and ideology, a truly transformative approach to policing requires us to move beyond sound bites, slogans, and stereotypes. An explosive and groundbreaking investigation, Tangled Up in Blue complicates matters rather than simplifies them, and gives pause both to those who think police can do no wrong—and those who think they can do no right.

Download or read book The Oddity written by Vincent Barrett Price and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dramatic philosophical novel spans more than half the twentieth century in Albuquerque and Los Angeles. The story centers on Hana Nicholas, a liberated woman ahead of her time who is the center of a circle of devoted friends in Albuquerque's North Valley. Her eccentric world comes to a sudden end in the early 1950s, and Lowell Briscoe, her young protégé, is haunted for the rest of his life by the rude destruction of Hana and her home. From New Mexico Christmas celebrations to the riots that shook Los Angeles in 1992, from psychotherapy to the courtroom, The Oddity is a heartfelt tribute to the ecumenical mixture of cultures that makes New Mexico unique. It is also a timely examination of issues that concern many Americans at the dawn of the twenty-first century, bringing to life conflicts between individual rights and institutionalized justice, spirituality and conformity, love, and fear. "This is a novel about meaning and the spiritual sickness that comes from searching for meaning and finding nothing that makes any sense."--from the Introduction
Download or read book THE POLICE OFFICER IN THE COURTROOM written by Don Lewis and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this text is to guide and instruct the reader in all areas crucial to the effective presentation of evidence in criminal courtroom cases and to emphasize the importance of the part played by the proper advance preparation of reports and evidence prior to getting into the courtroom. The text clearly indicates how closely an officer's credibility is tied to his or her investigative report. The book thoroughly examines the various problems of evidence holding that often arise during the time between arrest and trial, and the steps that can be taken to ensure a smooth flowing presentation during the trial. The text discusses and instructs in great detail on the many facets of direct-examination and also takes the reader into the world which the officer-witness dreads most, that of cross-examination. Through sample testimony, the officer is instructed in how to recognize and understand the defense strategies employed in each of many different situations as well as in how to turn attacks by a defense attorney to the officer's own benefit. Many practical question-and-answer courtroom scenarios are provided as examples. In addition to direct- and cross-examination, other major sections of the book include the complete trial process, report writing, the pre-trial process, and the use of exhibits. Whether used as a reference or a textbook, this text will provide the police officer with the necessary tools to develop confidence, ability, and control in presenting courtroom testimony.
Download or read book Flashpoints written by David Waddington and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-05 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1989, examines how a seemingly trivial incident can act as a flashpoint for wider disturbances. It investigates the underlying causes, the immediate context of the events, and the communication between police and crowd that takes place within them. The authors’ findings are based on first-hand research into case studies of political demonstrations, community disorder and industrial picketing in South Yorkshire, UK over a five-year period. Wide-ranging in its approach, the book covers industrial relations, police-community relations, and questions of political representation and legal rights. The authors provide a novel theoretical analysis, drawing on both sociology and social psychology, which they apply to their own case studies and to other instances of disorder, from Grosvenor Square in 1968 to Wapping in 1986. They also consider the possible impact of new public order legislation, and the policy implications of their research.

Download or read book Perceptions of Criminal Justice written by Vicky De Mesmaecker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-05 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, research into the legitimacy of criminal justice has convincingly demonstrated the importance of procedural justice to citizens’ sense of trust and confidence in legal authorities and their resulting willingness to conform to the law and cooperate with the legal authorities. Reversing the age-old question ‘why do people break the law?’, theories of procedural justice have provided insight into the factors that encourage people to abide by the law, suggesting that experiences of procedural fairness are crucial to achieving compliance with the law and to enhancing the legitimacy of criminal justice. While these studies are important in showing that legal authorities need to pay attention to the fairness judgements of the people involved in legal procedures, the focus on showing the importance of procedural justice has had the ironic consequence of distracting researchers from studying the equally important question of what fairness means to the people involved in legal proceedings. In one of the first studies on procedural justice to use a qualitative research design, the author provides the reader with detailed and insightful descriptions of the elements that determine how victims and defendants assess the fairness of their contact with the police and the courts. Focusing on both the pre-trial and the post-trial phases, this book will be of interest to academics and students engaged in the study of the psychology of law, procedural justice and the legitimacy of criminal justice.

He then became a ward of the Memphis, Tennessee, Juvenile Court System. As a child, he lived in a number of institutional settings: foster, group and children's homes, shelters, and detention facilities. In the ninth and tenth grades, he attended predominantly black schools and lived at a children's shelter. During this time of his life, while he was not a minority, he lived as one. At the age of sixteen, his Aunt Mary McNeill became his legal guardian, which kept him from being sent to a reform school. Duane and his Aunt Mary lived in Gulfport, Mississippi. Duane attended Gulfport High School and played on the football team as a center. His senior year of high school the team was undefeated and won the state championship. Duane attended Mississippi State University on a football scholarship. He played on the offensive line and spent one year as a graduate assistant coach. He graduated with a degree in social work and a certificate in corrections. Duane spent thirty-two years in law enforcement. Most of Duane's law enforcement career was with the Austin Police Department in Austin, Texas. This book is about his life's journey from being an orphan to becoming a police officer. The book was written with thanks to others in law enforcement, with hopes that they too, one day, will share their experiences with others in an effort to be sources of encouragement to each other.

Download or read book Untitled a Book about God and Creation written by Sandra Sievers and published by novum pro Verlag. This book was released on 2023-11-03 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From an early age, Sandra experienced that being different means being excluded. In her early twenties, she had to concede that her notions of life differed so widely from those of her environment that her attempt to explain herself, the world and its working principles ultimately lead her to a psychiatric ward. Diagnosis: acute psychosis. Writing is both a trigger and a cure for Sandra's illness. In her book, she documents her experiences and thoughts, combining the unreal and the idealism of a young woman dreaming of escaping the superficiality of the modern world. This is matched with an ice-cold clash with reality, whose pinpoint accuracy sometimes forces the reader to take a closer look at their own values.
Download or read book DEVOTIONS AND PRAYERS FOR POLICE OFFICERS written by Steven J. Voris and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While keeping physically fit and achieving expert law enforcement skills are essential to a successful police officer, maintaining a strong heart, mind, and soul are also crucial to surviving in his or her career. This new edition of this singular book serves as a tool to help law enforcement officers consciously take the pulse of their soul, ensuring that they stay on a strong spiritual and moral path. The book is not just a collection of devotions with religious meaning, but rather it clearly identifies some of the most trying situations that officers often find themselves in and helps them make sense of it all. The author then links these situations with relevant biblical passages. Each devotion in the book is freestanding and can be used in any order. The devotions and corresponding situations are presented in five categories: Justice, Dealing with People, Crime and Police Situations, Prevention, and Self-Care. Each of the 69 devotion sections concludes with questions for reflection and a meaningful prayer. The revision of the text includes 15 percent more devotions, and the Appendix of Prayers for Law Enforcement Situations has been increased from two to 22 prayers. These address a wide variety of ceremonial functions, including cadet graduations, retirements, blessings for substations, and award banquets. Also new is a guide for offering prayers for Fire Department events. This unique book is designed not only for the individual police officer, but firefighters, law enforcement supervisors, community service officers, chaplains, and ministers as well.
