Book excerpt: Nothing ever stays calm in Possum Creek for long. After watching her husband make-out with another woman during her best friend's wedding, Katie has been forced to acknowledge that her own happily ever after is more like a B-rated horror movie than a fairy tale. Katie loves her daughter more than life itself, but she's pretty sure that Ian loves his Xbox more than he loves either one of them. Addison, the man Katie's been secretly in love with from the safety of the friend-zone for most of her adult life, thinks she's pathetic. At least, that's what his girlfriend told her. Katie doesn't know what her future holds, but she knows it's past time for a change. She's done wasting her life trying to please Ian while silently lusting after Addy. She's ready to move on and leave her feelings for both of them in the past. Addison Malone thinks the dust has finally settled after his sister's wedding. He couldn't be more wrong. The evidence in a rash of burglaries that have struck Possum Creek and the surrounding area make it apparent that he and his friends are being betrayed by someone they've always considered one of their own. When Katie makes it clear that she's ready to walk away from him forever, Addison is left scrambling to fix their relationship while he's still trying to get to the bottom of the crime spree.

Book excerpt: In 1969, five players from a powerhouse high school soccer program enroll at Bainbridge University, where football is everything and soccer has only just become a varsity sport. Worse yet, the coach has never played the game, the upcoming schedule is a killer, and the Bainbridge team has only won two games in the past year. Life is about to become very challenging for these freshman used to being winners. Andrew Paxton, a captain of the former high school soccer team, is now sharing a dorm room with his best friend and star teammate, Brian Barrett. But trouble soon brews when Barrett clashes with the coach and members of the football team. Paxton, ever loyal to his best friend, has his own share of problems. He has silently and agonizingly carried a torch since the seventh grade for Barrett's ex-girlfriend, who followed him to Bainbridge hoping to win him back. Meanwhile, the soccer team faces one hurdle after another when Barrett threatens to quit, the team loses one of its stars to injury, and the coach's inexperience becomes painfully obvious. During a time when soccer was still in its infancy in the United States, the players must try to turn around a losing college program and, in the process, come to grips with the realities of friendship and love.

An incredible book, remarkable for its unflinching gaze at the past and also for its hope' GUARDIAN, 'Books to Give You Hope' 'Remarkable . . . Makes it clear just what an achievement it was starting over again, when survivors were not only economically and physically depleted, but emotionally devastated, too' SCOTSMAN Eva was arrested by the Nazis on her fifteenth birthday and sent to Auschwitz. Her survival depended on endless strokes of luck, her own determination and the love and protection of her mother Fritzi, who was deported with her. When Auschwitz was liberated, Eva and Fritzi began the long journey home. They searched desperately for Eva's father and brother, from whom they had been separated. The news came some months later. Tragically, both men had been killed. Before the war, in Amsterdam, Eva had become friendly with a young girl called Anne Frank. Though their fates were very different, Eva's life was set to be entwined with her friend's for ever more, after her mother Fritzi married Anne's father Otto Frank in 1953. This is a searingly honest account of how an ordinary person survived the Holocaust. Eva's memories and descriptions are heartbreakingly clear, her account brings the horror as close as it can possibly be. But this is also an exploration of what happened next, of Eva's struggle to live with herself after the war and to continue the work of her step-father Otto, ensuring that the legacy of Anne Frank is never forgotten.

"In this ambitious novel, dense with perspectives and social commentary, Onyebuchi dreams up disparate lives in a crumbling future America—with gentrifiers returning to Earth from space colonies and laborers trying to make a precarious living—while leaving room for moments of beauty and humor."—The New York Times, Editors' Choice In his adult novel debut, Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and NAACP Image Award finalist and ALA Alex and New England Book Award winner Tochi Onyebuchi delivers a sweeping science fiction epic in the vein of Samuel R. Delany and Station Eleven. In the 2050s, Earth has begun to empty. Those with the means and the privilege have departed the great cities of the United States for the more comfortable confines of space colonies. Those left behind salvage what they can from the collapsing infrastructure. As they eke out an existence, their neighborhoods are being cannibalized. Brick by brick, their houses are sent to the colonies, what was once a home now a quaint reminder for the colonists of the world that they wrecked. A primal biblical epic flung into the future, Goliath weaves together disparate narratives—a space-dweller looking at New Haven, Connecticut as a chance to reconnect with his spiraling lover; a group of laborers attempting to renew the promises of Earth’s crumbling cities; a journalist attempting to capture the violence of the streets; a marshal trying to solve a kidnapping—into a richly urgent mosaic about race, class, gentrification, and who is allowed to be the hero of any history. Her father had pointed out that a year after graduating high school Jay still didn’t have a steady job, a sure indication that he’d likely never amount to anything. Book The Men Who Flew the Vought F4U Corsair

Download or read book The Men Who Flew the Vought F4U Corsair written by Martin W. Bowmen and published by Pen and Sword Aviation. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First flown in 1940, the prototype Vought F4U Corsair instantly became the fastest fighter in the world and the fastest US aircraft of any description. Powered by a huge 18-cylinder Pratt and Whitney Double Wasp engine driving an enormous 13 feet 4 inch propeller, the first Corsairs were capable of 417mph. This figure would rise to nearly 450mph in later versions despite the fact that fuel load and overall weight was increased. Production began in 1941, not only by Vought but also by Goodyear and Brewster. The F4U entered service with the US Navy in September 1942, although carrier-borne operations were initiated a little later not by the Americans but by the British Fleet Air Arm. The aircraft subsequently came to be extensively used from land and sea by the US Marines, Royal Navy, and Royal New Zealand Air Force. Famous squadrons like VMF-214 'The Black Sheep’ and VF-17 ‘Jolly Rogers’, along with many others, maintained total ascendancy over the Japanese for the rest of the war - a remarkable achievement for a single type. After the Second World War, the Corsair stayed in production and was used with distinction by the French in Indo-China and again by the US Navy in Korea. Since then, Corsairs have achieved significant success in air races and more and more are being restored to fly for museums and warbird enthusiasts the world over. Martin Bowman’s comprehensive new book combines technical information and detailed development history with a fascinating combat history told, in many cases, by the Second World War pilots themselves. Well researched, readable, and illustrated with dozens of rare and previously unpublished photographs, The Men Who Flew the Vought F4U Corsair is the perfect book for any fan of the ‘bent wing bird’.

Book Marine Fighter Pilot at the Jugular of the Solomons

Download or read book Marine Fighter Pilot at the Jugular of the Solomons written by Capt. Wallace B. Thomson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Could an unobtrusive, skinny, bookish teacher who loves classical music and poetry become a fighter pilot in one of the bloodiest theaters of war our country has known? Could this modest self-described dreamer become the pilot of a Corsair F4U, the fastest plane built—equipped with six menacing, Browning .50 caliber machine guns, a primitive navigation system and a 16-cylinder engine so powerful that it could spin the plane over and crash if accelerated too fast? How far did Wally Thomson, the teacher, travel to become Captain Wallace B. Thomson the war hero of his hometown, Hackensack, New Jersey? In this memoir, Wally describes vivid wartime details that are often insightful, humorous or critical to a life or death decision. He also stands back to provide context for his role in the war effort, describing some of the most relevant battles preceding his arrival in the Pacific. And he reflects on some of the strategies, tactics, mistakes and successes of the Allies and the Japanese while he explains the tasks at hand—flying a powerful aircraft to carry out his missions, leading his men to attack the enemy and to survive to fly another day. Through his telling, we recognize the friendships, fears, romance, humor and the courage he witnessed in the Pacific. Wally’s is just one of the remarkable stories about the countless ordinary men and women who were asked to act in extraordinary ways during World War II. But each story is unique and each one deserves telling. This is Wally’s story—the story of Captain Wallace B. Thomson, a Marine Pilot at the Jugular of the Solomons.
