Book excerpt: Ali Amjad was once a recognized name in India’s labor movement. Because of his deep involvement with India’s freedom movement and workers’ rights movement, he was often incarcerated for long periods of time. After migrating to Pakistan, he formally chose the field of labor law for the defense of workers’ rights as a senior lawyer of Pakistan’s supreme court. His Urdu novel Kali Mati (‘Black Soil’) is based on the historic labor strike of 1958 at the Tata Steel plant in Jamshedpur, and is partly autobiographical, as detailed in his Urdu memoir Shakh-e-Nehal-e-Gham (‘A Branch of the Sapling of Sorrow’). The novel also quite brilliantly unpacks the conspiratorial plot leading to the communal violence of Jamshedpur in 1964.

Book excerpt: Once again, Reilly has penned a fast-moving nail-biting thriller. The storyline takes place in modern-day Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, during the occupation of the US and coalition forces amidst of the Trump peace negotiations with the Taliban and the Ashraf Ghani Government, for the planned withdrawal of all US forces by the end of 2021. Jacky Evans, an up-and-coming CIA agent at the age of twenty-six, had not gone unnoticed by her superiors at Langley and when a vacancy arose as the result of the mysterious disappearance of Meg Rennie, the Deputy Director of the CIA in Afghanistan, she was the perfect candidate. Having gone through a difficult relationship, it was the ideal career change and an exciting new challenge in a foreign country, and Jacky eagerly accepted the promotion. Was Rennie still alive or in captivity? No terrorist organization had claimed responsibility as yet, and the CIA was at a loss. The advent of the FBI at the direction of the President to bring the case to an early close, only added fuel to the fire with the CIA Director Jack Ross, and the worst was yet to come for Evans, caught in a web of illegal gunrunning, the opium drug cartel, the Mafia, death, destruction, and murder commonplace. The unexpected twists and turns will keep the reader hypnotized in search of the answers, and what happens in the next chapter. An exciting thriller not to be missed.

Book Freedom My Son

Download or read book Freedom My Son written by Joanne Stampley and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Freedom, My Son took place in New Orleans, Louisiana. A place people referred to as the city that never sleeps. The birthplace of Jazz and the New Orleans Saints. New Orleans can be an exciting place to live, but for this mother, it was a struggle just to get by day after day. Jolene had endured domestic violence for ten years. She had hoped that by getting out while she could and while her children were young enough, it would make a difference in their lives and save them from experiencing the horrible ordeal. She was wrong, because Freedom, My Son will show you how children could be exposed to violence at such a young age and how it would carry into their adulthood. For every mother, Freedom, My Son is a reflection of all of our lives. This remarkable book will show the grief, losses, and coping with the reality that we sometimes deal in life with unbearable pain. The cycle began with her mother that lived a violent life with her father. Jolene thought that this was a normal way for husbands and wives to live. She thought that if she could get her children out of that relationship early, it would make a difference, but her son was watching and learning with each fight and fuss. He was taking mental notes and seeing how much control his father had over his mother and the fear she carried. In his mind, he believed that violence was a good thing, and he would always have control. Freedom, My Son tells the story of the author's own experiences of domestic violence and how it affected the male child of her family. Not only domestic violence is addressed, murder suicide is an issue as well. As you read this story, the author hopes that if any woman has a child that is involved in an abusive marriage or relationship, she can see how it has an effect on the children. Readers, listen to the warning signs of your children like violent behavior, giving up on life, their actions in school, or aggressiveness toward their mother. Then you need to get out or get help. I hope this book, Freedom, My Son, will be in every bookstore in the United States and abroad.

Book excerpt: In the 1960s, post-colonial Libya fell prey to the sprawling industrial greed of the West, driven by the discovery of oil. While the modern quarter of Tripoli, built by the Italians, was small and affluent, the rest of the city--like the rest of the nation--was left to fend for itself amid the arid, sandy stretches of North Africa. As tensions mounted between eastern and western ideals, terror began to supplant justice, and acts of religiously motivated violence began to fill some of Tripoli's darkest corners. Against this backdrop, the teenaged Michele Balistreri--a smart young man plagued by thuggish tendencies and a youthful attraction to Fascism--suffered a succession of personal blows that would scar him for life: the death of his mother; a terrible tragedy that befell his best friend's family; and the consequences of his father's role in Gaddafi's rise to power. Worst of all, an innocent blood pact he made as a teenager would come to haunt him as an adult. Four decades later, journalist Linda Nardi is hard at work investigating the shadowy history of the Vatican Bank's involvement in Libya when she suddenly finds her attention diverted to an irresistible story assignment: covering the collapse of Colonel Gaddafi's forty-two year dictatorship. It is only a matter of time before Nardi's research and Balistreri's investigative work as a police commissario bring them into contact. Together they unearth a deadly conspiracy that goes to the top of Rome's power structure that neither of them will ever be able to forget.
