Book Keagan God s Brave Soldier

Download or read book Keagan God s Brave Soldier written by Shireen Goosen Alberts and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-05-03 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keagan was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of twenty-one months. The instant we received this devastating news, our lives changed instantly and forever. Shortly after Keagans diagnosis, I pondered the idea of writing a book, as I wanted to share our story with the world. My intention behind this idea was to provide insight or guidance to anyone who had even been in a similar situation. Most importantly, I wanted to share our ongoing journey with God, as we took Him into our lives. God carried us through our sorrow and pain, and He provided comfort and peace to our breaking hearts. With God in our lives, we were able to maintain peace of mind, regardless of the final outcome.

Book Survival Psychology

Download or read book Survival Psychology written by J. Leach and published by Springer. This book was released on 1994-09-05 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '...it should be made standard reading for those dealing with disaster/survival situations, it is also very informative in helping the general reader understand the psychology of survivors...The text makes compulsive reading and the book is hard to put down. It is worth examining, no matter where your professional interest lies.'- Duncan MacPaul, Nursing Times. Why do so many people die without need? How can an exceptional few survive extraordinarily harsh conditions sometimes after months or years of deprivation? Recent years have seen remarkable improvements in survival training and technology, yet most people still perish quickly in the face of adversity. In this book John Leach seeks to answer these questions by considering the psychology of human survival; how groups and individuals behave before, during and after life threatening events. Both short and long-term survival are addressed as well as the psychological consequences of hunger, thirst, cold, heat, crowding, isolation, fatigue and sleep deprivation. The essence of this work is distilled into a set of principles for psychological first-aid for use in the field.

The few human survivors have been evacuated to the farthest reaches of space to rebuild and fight back against the L'zuhl onslaught. There, on the distant planet of Palangonia, in a large, walled compound that houses the new human colony, lives the former Newcastle United and England boss Kevin Keegan, now manager of Palangonia FC. As the war rages, Keegan would love it if he could focus on the most important thing – picking up three points on Saturday against the neighbouring nebula – but with whispers of a L'zuhl spy on the loose in the compound, it falls to Keegan himself to find the culprit before it's too late...

  • Author : Craige B. Champion
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book The Peace of the Gods written by Craige B. Champion and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peace of the Gods takes a new approach to the study of Roman elites' religious practices and beliefs, using current theories in psychology, sociology, and anthropology, as well as cultural and literary studies. Craige Champion focuses on what the elites of the Middle Republic (ca. 250–ca. 100 BCE) actually did in the religious sphere, rather than what they merely said or wrote about it, in order to provide a more nuanced and satisfying historical reconstruction of what their religion may have meant to those who commanded the Roman world and its imperial subjects. The book examines the nature and structure of the major priesthoods in Rome itself, Roman military commanders' religious behaviors in dangerous field conditions, and the state religion's acceptance or rejection of new cults and rituals in response to external events that benefited or threatened the Republic. According to a once-dominant but now-outmoded interpretation of Roman religion that goes back to the ancient Greek historian Polybius, the elites didn't believe in their gods but merely used religion to control the masses. Using that interpretation as a counterfactual lens, Champion argues instead that Roman elites sincerely tried to maintain Rome's good fortune through a pax deorum or "peace of the gods." The result offers rich new insights into the role of religion in elite Roman life.

Book excerpt: The Greek Menander said that they whom the Gods love die young, and many have been the inheritors of unfulfilled renown. Perhaps none of them was so unique as Toru Dutt. Frail and delicate since birth, brought up by a doting father, who lavished every care and attention on her, born in a Hindu family but converted early to Christianity, fed on Hindu myths and legends acquired both through books and through oral tradition, educated in Europe and longing to return to England, attracted towards the end of her life by Sanskrit and devoting weary hours to its grammatical intricacies, writing in French and English but not in her mother tongue, publishing works in both these languages, leaving behind with those who knew her the fragrant memory of an exceedingly charming personality, dying before she was twenty two, Toru Dutt is one of the most poignant examples of those who before their proper time pass through the door of darkness.

Book The Gods of War

    Book Details:
  • Author : Meic Pearse
  • Publisher : InterVarsity Press
  • Release : 2007-01-01

Download or read book The Gods of War written by Meic Pearse and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this provocative book, historian Meic Pearse debunks the common misconception that religion causes war. He argues that while religion is often a significant generator of armed conflict both in the past and in the present, the two principal causes of human warfare are in fact culture and greed for territory, resources or power. Since culture and greed often clothe themselves in religion, wars fought for culture often appear to be fought for religion. With keen analysis of global history and current events, Pearse shows how irreligion has produced far bloodier wars than religion and how global secularism itself does violence to religion and traditional cultures. Ultimately, throughout history warfare has been waged over the shape of society itself. A crisis in meaning leads people to fight for what they fear may be lost. For a world weary of war, Pearse points beyond both cultural and secular metanarratives to an alternative hope. Market/Audience Church leaders Laypeople Evangelists and missionaries Seminary students and professors Features and Benefits Provides a global historical perspective on war, religion and culture Evenhanded and broad in scope Examines both historical and contemporary examples
