Book excerpt: Come take an adventurous romantic interlude to a historical black African ancient kingdom known as Kush. Famous for their beautiful walled cities, pyramids, and fountains, ancient Kush was located just south of Egypt, in present day Sudan. Its people were renown for being fantastic archers and ironworkers, in addition to world traders and herdsmen of cattle. Elephants and black stallions were used in the army and pageantry of this wealthy black African civilization where gold and diamonds were abundant. The story takes place around the first century BC: The king of Kush wishes to prearrange a marriage with his son to a beautiful black African princess, Ashaki, who lives in the African kingdom of Shaba. The proud princess Ashaki however has no desire to be queen over Kush, as can be seen in the following exchange between the princess and her father: “Kush is one of the most splendid and powerful countries in the world. It should be every girl’s dream to be a queen over such a wonderful land!” “But I am a princess now! Why do I need to go to Kush to be princess there?” “Ah, Ashaki,” sighed the king in an exasperated tone. “Even princesses have responsibilities. Our people count on us.” “I’ve already heard this part, father. I can not marry Machupa and that’s final! If he is so great, let a Kushite girl marry him!” ... Of course, the princess does agree to go to Kush with her friends to see once and for all what the country is like and to meet its heir prince… with an outcome unexpected by everyone. Experience the splendor of ancient black Africa and one of its most important ancient civilizations – Kush – in this fictionalized story meant to appeal to both children and adults alike.

Continuing well into the 1930s because of the economic demands enforced by European colonial rule, pawnship and slavery in the event of default on a loan has had a particularly detrimental effect on women and children, demonstrating the links between credit, servility and gender in large parts of Africa.

Others divorce because of personality clashes and different skill levels. Many negotiate their parenting duties. But how do these personal life events link to long-lasting bonds, long life-spans and exceptional overall intelligence? Professor Gisela Kaplan, an eminent voice in animal behaviour, and particularly bird behaviour, draws on the latest insights in the evolution of particular cognitive and social abilities. She uncovers motivations and attractions in partner choice that are far more complex than was once believed. She shows how humans and birds may be more alike in attachment and mating behaviour than we think - despite the enormous evolutionary distance between us. Based on a wealth of original research and complemented by illustrations and colour photographs, Bird Bonds is a valuable resource and a beguiling insight into the world of the birds around us.

Book Slave Traders by Invitation

Download or read book Slave Traders by Invitation written by Finn Fuglestad and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-01 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Slave Coast, situated in what is now the West African state of Benin, was the epicentre of the Atlantic Slave Trade. But it was also an inhospitable, surf-ridden coastline, subject to crashing breakers and devoid of permanent human settlement. Nor was it easily accessible from the interior due to a lagoon which ran parallel to the coast. The local inhabitants were not only sheltered against incursions from the sea, but were also locked off from it. Yet, paradoxically, it was this coastline that witnessed a thriving long-term commercial relation-ship between Europeans and Africans, based on the trans-Atlantic slave trade. How did it come about? How was it all organised? And how did the locals react to the opportunities these new trading relations offered them? The Kingdom of Dahomey is usually cited as the Slave Coast's archetypical slave raiding and slave trading polity. An inland realm, it was a latecomer to the slave trade, and simply incorporated a pre-existing system by dint of military prowess, which ultimately was to prove radically counterproductive. Fuglestad's book seeks to explain the Dahomean 'anomaly' and its impact on the Slave Coast's societies and polities.
