Book Monument Valley Navajo Nation Tribal Park

Download or read book Monument Valley Navajo Nation Tribal Park written by Richard Holtzin and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Monument Valley's Navajo Tribal Park is the Southwest's iconic altar of sandstone monoliths. Located 22 miles north of Kayenta, Arizona, the valley spreads out and shares its expansive boundary with southeast Utah. This is the heart of Navajo country. It's also where many classic Western movies were filmed. There are fifteen Sandstone Sketches in this nonfiction composition written for adults, each focusing on a facet of Monument Valley's ancient erosional landscape: the geology and how the sculpted monuments, like gigantic figurines, were fashioned over millions of years; an abstract of the Navajo who settled here centuries ago; a tour of the interior's prominent vistas; a road tour of scenic highlights in this vicinity of the Four Corners region; two backcountry backpacking sojourns's (the author's); evocative poetry describing Monument Valley's changing appearance and atmosphere over a twenty-four-hour period; and, of course, celebrated movies filmed here. Overall, the portrayals suffice as an informative tourist's field guide that can be read from cover to cover or select sketches that appeal to one's interest. As a retired educator and instructor for the likes of the Grand Canyon Field Institute, most of what I did for a living for some forty years entailed teaching various geosciences, natural and human history, environmental sciences, zoology, mathematics, and assorted published writings. Particularly, America's National Parks and Monuments, State and Tribal parks, and the stone cities and windows to the past, the archeological ruins. In this road tour series, I have gathered a list of scenic icons that are relegated to a specific region and correlated to connecting primary and secondary roads and highways. In other words, Cortez, Colorado defines the axis of the so-called Four Corner region of the Colorado Plateau Province. Hence, this local serves as the principal hub in this sector of the Southwest whose archeological ruins throughout this wide, far vicinity are among the most celebrated. Accordingly, Moab, Utah defines the hub of stunningly attractive national parks, starting with Arches and Canyonlands, and extended into the heart of so-called Indian Country--Monument Valley and its regional hub, Kayenta, Arizona. With this abstract in mind, the seventeen mini-book series presents salient details about each scenic icon in a concise, yet thorough manner. For instance, geographic coordinates, essential information about each featured selection (i.e., geology, natural and human history), directions, contact information, and incidental essentials where applicable (i.e., hiking trails and special features about each destination). From that modest beginning, Kayenta became the center of Navajo gatherings and exploring expeditions to Rainbow Bridge, Monument Valley, and the grand cliff dwellings in Tsegi Canyon. Soon came a parade of visitors, including authors, painters, and archaeologists, as well as cowboys, miners, traders, and tourists. The Kayenta Township today is home to descendants of the early inhabitants and the hub for thousands of annual visitors from around the world who come to see the magnificent region known as Monument Valley.

Download or read book Amazing Arizona written by Boye Lafayette De Mente and published by Cultural-Insight Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arizona is unique among American states, not only in its geography and geology but also in the diversity of its climate, in its indigenous animal and plant life, and in the history of its first inhabitants-communities of Indians whose ancestors arrived on the scene more than 20,000 years ago. Arizona is also the youngest of the contiguous mainland states of America...precisely because of these very same factors. Its climate, geography and Indian tribes were major barriers that prevented the territory from becoming widely populated by the Spanish, Mexicans and early European-Americans, and from being used as a cross-roads by American fur/pelt trappers, gold prospectors and settlers who began pushing west in the mid-1800s. Now, it is exactly these same factors that make Arizona a great place to live as well as a world-famous travel destination. The stories of how Arizona finally became what it is today are as amazing as the lay and the beauty of the land. Great background reading for residents and visitors alike, and an ideal gift.

Book Rainbow Bridge to Monument Valley

Download or read book Rainbow Bridge to Monument Valley written by Thomas J. Harvey and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-07-29 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colorado River Plateau is home to two of the best-known landscapes in the world: Rainbow Bridge in southern Utah and Monument Valley on the Utah-Arizona border. Twentieth-century popular culture made these places icons of the American West, and advertising continues to exploit their significance today. In Rainbow Bridge to Monument Valley, Thomas J. Harvey artfully tells how Navajos and Anglo-Americans created fabrics of meaning out of this stunning desert landscape, space that western novelist Zane Grey called “the storehouse of unlived years,” where a rugged, more authentic life beckoned. Harvey explores the different ways in which the two societies imbued the landscape with deep cultural significance. Navajos long ago incorporated Rainbow Bridge into the complex origin story that embodies their religion and worldview. In the early 1900s, archaeologists crossed paths with Grey in the Rainbow Bridge area. Grey, credited with making the modern western novel popular, sought freedom from the contemporary world and reimagined the landscape for his own purposes. In the process, Harvey shows, Grey erased most of the Navajo inhabitants. This view of the landscape culminated in filmmaker John Ford’s use of Monument Valley as the setting for his epic mid-twentieth-century Westerns. Harvey extends the story into the late twentieth century when environmentalists sought to set aside Rainbow Bridge as a symbolic remnant of nature untainted by modernization. Tourists continue to flock to Monument Valley and Rainbow Bridge, as they have for a century, but the landscapes are most familiar today because of their appearances in advertising. Monument Valley has been used to sell perfume, beer, and sport utility vehicles. Encompassing the history of the Navajo, archaeology, literature, film, environmentalism, and tourism, Rainbow Bridge to Monument Valley explores how these rock formations, Navajo sacred spaces still, have become embedded in the modern identity of the American West—and of the nation itself.
