Book Grace Amid Tragedy

Download or read book Grace Amid Tragedy written by Jim Clark and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-06 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the books written about the Hurricane Katrina tragedy, Grace Amid Tragedy stands out with its broader perspective and inspiring message. As a Red Cross volunteer, Jim Clark was a first-hand witness to the catastrophic damage and the heart-wrenching stories. Going beyond that, however, Clark finds the silver lining in this literal storm, with recognition of the Katrina response as the largest outpouring of donations, volunteers, and compassion in our country's history. Chronicling the courage and spiritual growth of a handful of hurricane victims over the five month period after the hurricane, along with his own sense of personal growth, we are left with an uplifting and insightful testament to the human spirit. Fifty percent of the profits from the sale of this book will be donated to the hurricane Katrina rebuilding effort. "If you're seeking more meaning in your life, this book is an inspiring guide. Jim Clark's descriptions of his experiences with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort make us all feel more alive, connected, and open to our own intuitive, wake-up calls." -- Susan Skog, author

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Katrina's Grace: Wind, Water and Wisdom takes us on Sandra's journey of recovery from Hurricane Katrina. Join her from a pre-hurricane fall that left her helpless and found her at her daughter's home waiting and wondering what was happening in Gulfport, to first sight of her destroyed home, car, and treasures. The journey continues through a lifetime of memories as lost treasures were unearthed, to the streams of volunteers who came to help her wade through the upheaval, build a temporary living space, and care for her neighbors and others in the community. As we read Sandra's story, we remember our own grief and loss after Katrina or similar disaster experiences. This story speaks not only to the survivors, but to disaster responders who come to pick up the pieces yet don't hear the rest of the story of those with whom they shared an hour or a week, and finally they and all readers are able to feel the pain around the disasters where they served. Additionally, it provides insight for volunteers going into disaster work. A powerful yet sensitive story of dwelling in Grace and the incredible gifts of Grace from nature; from those who prayed, sent gifts, and came; and from living memories. Weaving reflections on lost treasures with journal excerpts, poetry, stories of those who came to help, sent needed materials and supplies, and also prayed, Sandra Price presents stories from a heart-breaking disaster. Katrina's Grace invites us into the depth of Sandra's soul and on into the depth of our own souls. As we read her story, we remember our own disasters and weep, laugh and ponder. And we can understand why Sandra said of Katrina, "I wouldn't have missed it for the world."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since six months after landfall, Ellen Blue has taught "The Church's Response to Katrina." It sidesteps disaster response, where clearly the church should be involved. What was unclear was how leaders in a connectional denomination like United Methodism should decide which churches to merge or decommission after floods destroyed seventy churches and displaced ninety pastors, and no one knew how many members would return. Katrina gave the church a chance to re-make itself without deteriorating structures in no-longer-thriving neighborhoods. Yet as members returned to chaos, they sought solace. Should the church meet needs for Sanctuary and reassurance or use newfound flexibility to seek justice? In Case of Katrina examines leadership strategies and the theological convictions that underlay them during the struggle to decide. The larger United Methodist Church controls real estate, and the hierarchy had the power to choose. Instead they let verdicts spring primarily from congregants and pastors on the ground through a long, controversial process. Recovery has been entwined with issues of race and class. Cooperation among African American and Anglo congregations has birthed vibrant multi-racial worship and ministries. Yet other prophetic ministry was left undone, and it should set the agenda for the next decade.

Download or read book Children of Katrina written by Alice Fothergill and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When children experience upheaval and trauma, adults often view them as either vulnerable and helpless or as resilient and able to easily “bounce back.” But the reality is far more complex for the children and youth whose lives are suddenly upended by disaster. How are children actually affected by catastrophic events and how do they cope with the damage and disruption? Children of Katrina offers one of the only long-term, multiyear studies of young people following disaster. Sociologists Alice Fothergill and Lori Peek spent seven years after Hurricane Katrina interviewing and observing several hundred children and their family members, friends, neighbors, teachers, and other caregivers. In this book, they focus intimately on seven children between the ages of three and eighteen, selected because they exemplify the varied experiences of the larger group. They find that children followed three different post-disaster trajectories—declining, finding equilibrium, and fluctuating—as they tried to regain stability. The children’s moving stories illuminate how a devastating disaster affects individual health and well-being, family situations, housing and neighborhood contexts, schooling, peer relationships, and extracurricular activities. This work also demonstrates how outcomes were often worse for children who were vulnerable and living in crisis before the storm. Fothergill and Peek clarify what kinds of assistance children need during emergency response and recovery periods, as well as the individual, familial, social, and structural factors that aid or hinder children in getting that support.

Book Through Trauma to Grace

Download or read book Through Trauma to Grace written by Katrina Stewart and published by Stewart Consulting LLC. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Retreating to the closet made me feel like I was invisible to the world. Focused on survival, those moments were the only times I felt safe. In the closet, I could let all the pain surface, hot tears running down my face, while my body would tremble within silent sobs of hurt and agony. Somehow, in those dark, depressing hours in that closet, in between trying to protect my mom, I learned to pray. Years later, the issues I had been dealing with as a child were resurfacing as an adult. My bouts of depression were becoming more frequent, and my husband and I had hit a hard patch in our marriage. I had been spending some time in the closet, crying, and praying for God to take away the darkness that was trying to engulf me again. I knew I had to come out of the closet, but I felt like I was carrying the closet around with me at this point, because I felt I had to be there for her once more. Join Katrina for an unforgettable story of the transition of a small girl to a mighty woman of God who would break the generational chains and enclosures that had entrapped her and her family for too long.

Book Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome

Download or read book Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome written by Joy DeGruy and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From acclaimed author and researcher Dr. Joy DeGruy comes this fascinating book that explores the psychological and emotional impact on African Americans after enduring the horrific Middle Passage, over 300 years of slavery, followed by continued discrimination. From the beginning of American chattel slavery in the 1500’s, until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865, Africans were hunted like animals, captured, sold, tortured, and raped. They experienced the worst kind of physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual abuse. Given such history, Dr. Joy DeGruy asked the question, “Isn’t it likely those enslaved were severely traumatized? Furthermore, did the trauma and the effects of such horrific abuse end with the abolition of slavery?” Emancipation was followed by another hundred years of institutionalized subjugation through the enactment of Black Codes and Jim Crow laws, peonage and convict leasing, and domestic terrorism and lynching. Today the violations continue, and when combined with the crimes of the past, they result in further unmeasured injury. What do repeated traumas visited upon generation after generation of a people produce? What are the impacts of the ordeals associated with chattel slavery, and with the institutions that followed, on African Americans today? Dr. DeGruy answers these questions and more as she encourages African Americans to view their attitudes, assumptions, and emotions through the lens of history. By doing so, she argues they will gain a greater understanding of the impact centuries of slavery and oppression has had on African Americans. Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome is an important read for all Americans, as the institution of slavery has had an impact on every race and culture. “A masterwork. [DeGruy’s] deep understanding, critical analysis, and determination to illuminate core truths are essential to addressing the long-lived devastation of slavery. Her book is the balm we need to heal ourselves and our relationships. It is a gift of wholeness.”—Susan Taylor, former Editorial Director of Essence magazine

Book Grace for Grace

Download or read book Grace for Grace written by Steve De Jarnatt and published by ACRE (CHUP). This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Grace for Grace, celebrated film and television director and screenwriter Steve De Jarnatt brings his exuberant style of storytelling to the page. These wildly imaginative stories are characterized by idiosyncratic syntax, sweeping scale, and the lush inner lives of the characters. De Jarnatt's protagonists are in search of meaning and belonging, and often, at the same time, redemption and revenge. "Wraiths in a Swelter" is both a ghost story and a confessional memoir, following a deliriously exhausted EMT through a deadly Chicago heat wave. "Her Great Blue" is a surreal interspecies love story, while "Rubiaux Rising" is a tale of triumph amid disaster during Hurricane Katrina, and "Harmony Arm" is a comi-tragic romp through a Furry convention. The stories in Grace for Grace are crucibles that test human, and occasionally inhuman, limits, showing readers the surprising changes brought about by characters' encounters with unexpected extremes. This collection, which includes a Best American Short Stories selection, brings De Jarnatt's distinctive voice and cinematic vision to a new audience.
