Book Capital in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Capital in the Twenty First Century written by Thomas Piketty and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 817 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the grand dynamics that drive the accumulation and distribution of capital? Questions about the long-term evolution of inequality, the concentration of wealth, and the prospects for economic growth lie at the heart of political economy. But satisfactory answers have been hard to find for lack of adequate data and clear guiding theories. In this work the author analyzes a unique collection of data from twenty countries, ranging as far back as the eighteenth century, to uncover key economic and social patterns. His findings transform debate and set the agenda for the next generation of thought about wealth and inequality. He shows that modern economic growth and the diffusion of knowledge have allowed us to avoid inequalities on the apocalyptic scale predicted by Karl Marx. But we have not modified the deep structures of capital and inequality as much as we thought in the optimistic decades following World War II. The main driver of inequality--the tendency of returns on capital to exceed the rate of economic growth--today threatens to generate extreme inequalities that stir discontent and undermine democratic values if political action is not taken. But economic trends are not acts of God. Political action has curbed dangerous inequalities in the past, the author says, and may do so again. This original work reorients our understanding of economic history and confronts us with sobering lessons for today.

Book The Carnival of the Animals

Download or read book The Carnival of the Animals written by Jack Prelutsky and published by Knopf Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great way to introduce children to classical music. America’s first Children's Poet Laureate has written all-new verses to accompany the composer Camille Saint-Saëns’s The Carnival of the Animals, and the illustrator of the Harry Potter books has turned these rollicking rhymes into a picture-book fun fest. A note to parents and teachers by Judith Bachleitner, head of the music department at the prestigious Rudolf Steiner School in New York City, suggests ways preschoolers can act out the music—tromp like an elephant, hop like a kangaroo, glide like a swan—or, for older children, be creatively inspired by this joyful work.

Book excerpt: Stretching from the coast of the North and Baltic seas to the precipitous peaks of the Alps, this guide journeys from north to south, traversing the many different natural and cultural landscapes of Germany. From the unique environment of the coastal mudflats and the popular islands of Sylt and Rügen, across the plains of northern Germany and the midlands hills to the highest point in the land, the Zugspitze, this illustrated volume depicts the country's geographical diversity in all its glory. Churches, castles, and palaces are captured, bearing witness to a rich and turbulent past, from the Romanesque cathedrals of the German emperors to the fairytale castles of Ludwig II of Bavaria. Medieval cities, such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Lübeck, and Wernigerode and modern metropolises boasting up-to-the-minute architectural constructions--with the new capital of Berlin firmly to the fore--harbor many highlights of Germany's artistic and cultural history. Showcasing this country in the very heart of Europe, this guide also comments on the castles on the Rhine and Saale, the making of wine, and the great writers of Classical Weimar, Goethe and Schiller.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben presents his fierce, passionate, and deeply personal commentaries regarding the 2020 health emergency as it played out in Italy and across the world. Alongside and beyond accusations, these texts reflect upon the great transformation affecting Western democracies. In the name of biosecurity and health, the model of bourgeois democracy—together with its rights, institutions, and constitutions—is surrendering everywhere to a new despotism where citizens accept unprecedented limitations to their freedoms. The push to accept this new normal leads to the urgency of the volume’s title: Where Are We Now? For how long will we accept living in a constantly extended state of exception, the end of which remains impossible to see?
