Book The Great Karnak Inscription of Merneptah

Download or read book The Great Karnak Inscription of Merneptah written by Colleen Manassa and published by Yale Egyptology. This book was released on 2004-12-31 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Karnak Inscription of Merneptah's 5th regnal year, the longest surviving continuous monumental text from Egypt, describes the combined Libyan and Sea People invasion of Egypt c.1208 BCE. This new study, the first complete commentary on this long but unfortunately damaged text, begins with a translation of the text, accompanied by detailed notes. The study considers specific military aspects of the inscription alongside its religious background. A grammatical analysis of the Great Karnak Inscription also sheds new light on the grammar of Ramesside monumental texts. Reviews for this volume: "...a very useful study of a highly important historical text, largely neglected hitherto.'" - K A Kitchen, Book List (2005) "...should be of interest to anyone studying issues relating to international relations of the period, aspects of military conflict in the later New Kingdom, or the monumental grammar of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Dynasties [...] The welcome inclusion of the complete hieroglyphic text should be of great use to anyone wishing to study the content and grammar of this inscription for themselves." - Joshua Roberson, Journal of the American Research Center in Egypt, Vol. XL (2005)

Book The Temples of Karnak

    Book Details:
  • Author : R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz
  • Publisher : Inner Traditions
  • Release : 1999-10-01
  • ISBN : 9780892817122
  • Pages : 736 pages

Download or read book The Temples of Karnak written by R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz and published by Inner Traditions. This book was released on 1999-10-01 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 700 photographs and line illustrations documenting the ancient Egyptian temples of Karnak • A magnificent excursion that explores the monuments, ruins, statues, and bas-reliefs from the ancient and highly developed civilization of Egypt • The only complete photographic record available of this important acheological treasure • Contains 600 photographs by two top French award-winning photographers This book is a magnificent excursion led by R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz to the monuments, ruins, statues, and bas-reliefs of the temples of Karnak. With nearly 600 photographs by Georges and Valentine de Mire, more than 450 of which are full-page plates, this volume is the only complete photographic record of this important historic site. Because of recent vandalism many of the artifacts are no longer intact, and it is no longer possible to see many of the details captured in these images. This promenade through the temples of Karnak reveals the remains of a world devoted to an unimpeachable faith in the afterlife, a faith whose conviction seems to have exalted its builders and artists, as was the case for several brief centuries with those who constructed the cathedrals of the Middle Ages. One did not work at fashioning these stones, nor were these works sculpted under someone's strict authority; here it was necessary to act out of the heart. Every gesture in the depictions, every arrangement in the buildings, is a hieroglyph from the symbolic language of the sages who spoke to spirit and consciousness.

Book Akhenatens Sed Festival At Karna

Download or read book Akhenatens Sed Festival At Karna written by Jocelyn Gohary and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-17 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992 as part of the Studies in Egyptology Series. This study looks at the depiction of the Sed-festival on blocks of the Temple at Karnak. According to some studies, Pharaoh Amenhotep IV recorded details of a Sed-festival event in his new temple complex dedicated to the Aten at Karnak. Blocks from the temple buildings which were re-used after the death of Amenhotep IV, were examined and photographed by the Akhenaten Temple Project between 1966 and 1977 in an attempt to analyse, with the aid of the computer, scenes carved on the blocks known as the Akhenaten 'talatat'.

Book The Graffiti on the Khonsu Temple Roof at Karnak

Download or read book The Graffiti on the Khonsu Temple Roof at Karnak written by Helen Jacquet-Gordon and published by Oriental Inst Publications Sales. This book was released on 2003 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graffiti incised on the roof blocks of the temple of Khonsu at Karnak, written in the hieroglyphic, hieratic, and Demotic scripts and accompanied by the outlines of pairs of feet, caught the eye of Champollion and other early voyagers who succeeded in clambering up onto that part of the roof still remaining over the colonnade of the first court. Such graffiti have usually been interpreted as mementos left by ancient visitors passing through Thebes. A complete survey of all the graffiti on the roof and a detailed study of the inscriptions, carried out over a considerable period of time, has revealed the unexpected fact that far from being casual tourists, it was mostly the priestly personnel of the temple itself whose graffiti have been preserved there. The inscriptions record the name and titles of the person whose footprints are depicted, as well as the name of his father and sometimes that of his grandfather, but only in three cases does the name of his mother appear. Prayers addressed mainly to Khonsu himself demonstrate the firm belief of these priestly servitors in the lasting protection afforded them by the god in whose sacred precinct their graffiti have been carved. The 334 graffiti recorded in the volume are richly illustrated by photographs and facsimile drawings. Transliterations, translations, line notes, and commentaries are provided. The text concludes with general, name, epithet, and title indices.

Book The Akhenaten Colossi of Karnak

Download or read book The Akhenaten Colossi of Karnak written by Lise Manniche and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the most fascinating sculptures to have survived from ancient Egypt are the colossal statues of Akhenaten, erected at the beginning of his reign in his new temple to the Aten at Karnak. Fragments of more than thirty statues are now known, showing the paradoxical features combining male and female, young and aged, characteristic of representations of this king. Did he look like this in real life? Or was his iconography skilfully devised to mirror his concept of his role in the universe? The author presents the history of the discovery of the statue fragments from 1925 to the present day; the profusion of opinions on the appearance of the king and his alleged medical conditions; and the various suggestions for an interpretation of the perplexing evidence. A complete catalog of all major fragments is included, as well as many pictures not previously published.

Book Architecture Power and Religion

Download or read book Architecture Power and Religion written by David Warburton and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2012 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the fundamental question of the origins and nature of monumental religious architecture. The principal argument is that the origins of monumental religious architecture were basically aspatial and that the gradual incorporation of functional space into religious architecture can be related to transformations in religious thought. Although the discussion ranges across the Old World, the argument centers on Egypt and the Egyptian female king Hatshepsut: she set the tone for the New Kingdom by tying her legitimacy to Amun and the monuments she built for him. This leads into the issues of power and political legitimacy, and their relevance to myths. The basic contention is that the political ideologies of the Near Eastern Bronze Age contributed fundamentally to what later became the phenomenon we know as "religion," and that the history of the architecture must be understood in order to understand both religion and architectural space.
