In the "Theory of Heavens" (1755), Kant intended to harmonize the Newtonian laws of motion with a physicotheological argument for the existence of God. But only a few years later, in the "Ground of Proof" essay (1763), Kant defended an ontological ('possibility' or 'modal') argument on the basis of its logical exactitude. Nevertheless he continued to praise the physicotheological argument. In the first "Critique" (1781/7), Kant replaced the traditional constitutive proofs with regulative theoretical and practical arguments. He continued to defend a moral argument in the second "Critique" (1788). But in the third "Critique" (1790), Kant reintroduced a physicotheological besides an ethicotheological argument in order to unify the critical system of philosophy. Kant developed further moral arguments in the "Theodicy" essay (1791) and the "Religion" (1793/4), and still continued to discuss proofs for God's existence in the "OP" (1796–1804). This volume speaks to Kant specialists in the fields of philosophy and theology, but can be used also as an introduction for non-academic readers.

Book excerpt: Analyzes the origin, structure and resolution of Kant's antinomies of reason from a systematic rather than a historical perspective, exploring the relationship between the theoretical antinomies and the practical antinomy in order to indicate their similarities and differences and to suggest the dependence of the latter on the former. The author focuses attention on four points: 1) The author discusses the antinomies in Kant's three Critiques in terms of their logical and transcendental characteristics in the hope of locating criteria for Kantian antinomies, 2) The antinomies are found to arise from an ambiguity common to their highest objects, 3) The resolution of the theoretical antinomies is found to be essentially different from the resolution of the practical antinomy in spite of Kant's claim that the solution to the practical antinomy is the same as the solution to the third theoretical antinomy, and 4) It is shown that the practical antinomy depends on the theoretical antinomies and consequently that the functioning of practical reason is facilitated by theoretical reason. The author concludes that the third and fourth theoretical antinomies contribute to the resolution of the practical antinomy by reinforcing the idea of a supersensible realm. For advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in Kantian philosophy.

Kant distinguishes things in themselves from phenomena, and in so doing he makes a metaphysical distinction between intrinsic and relational properties of substances. Kant says that phenomena—things as we know them—consist 'entirely of relations', by which he means forces. His claim that we have no knowledge of things in themselves is not idealism, but epistemic humility: we have no knowledge of the intrinsic properties of substances. This humility has its roots in some plausible philosophical beliefs: an empiricist belief in the receptivity of human knowledge and a metaphysical belief in the irreducibility of relational properties. Langton's interpretation vindicates Kant's scientific realism, and shows his primary/secondary quality distinction to be superior even to modern-day competitors. And it answers the famous charge that Kant's tale of things in themselves is one that makes itself untellable.
