Since aesthetic judgment of the beautiful becomes possible only when the mind is confronted with things of nature, for which no determined concepts of understanding are available, aesthetic judgment is involved in an epistemological or, rather, para-epistemological task. The predicate "beautiful" indicates that something has minimal form and is cognizable. This book explores this concept of form, in particular the role of presentation ("Darstellung") in what Kant refers to as "mere form," which involves not only the understanding, but also reason as the faculty of ideas. Such a notion of form reveals why the beautiful can be related to the morally good. On the basis of this reinterpreted concept of form, most major concepts and themes of the "Critique of Judgment"--such as disinterestedness, free play, the sublime, genius, and beautiful arts--are examined by the author and shown in a new light.

By arguing that Wittgenstein's later work and contemporary theory of perception offer just what we need for a unified approach to art and beauty, Sonia Sedivy provides new answers to these contemporary challenges. These new accounts also provide support for the Wittgensteinian realism and theory of perception that make them possible. Wittgenstein's subtle form of realism explains artworks in terms of norm governed practices that have their own varied constitutive norms and values. Wittgensteinian realism also suggests that diverse beauties become available and compelling in different cultural eras and bring a shared 'higher-order' value into view. With this framework in place, Sedivy argues that perception is a form of engagement with the world that draws on our conceptual capacities. This approach explains how perceptual experience and the perceptible presence of the world are of value, helping to account for the diversity of beauties that are available in different historical contexts and why the many faces of beauty allow us to experience the value of the world's perceptible presence. Carefully examining contemporary debates about art, aesthetics and perception, Beauty and the End of Art presents an original approach. Book excerpt: This paper explains Immanuel Kant's theories of art and fine art, and argues that tattoos should be considered fine art within his aesthetic framework. After outlining Kant's general conception of art and how it differs from nature, science, and craft, I demonstrate that individual tattoos can be designated as works of art in Kant’s theory. I then use Kant’s method of comparing the relative talent presupposed by a discipline to show that tattooing as a discipline should be considered an art form. Afterwards, I explain Kant’s conception of fine art and describe how it differs from mechanical, aesthetic, and agreeable art. I then demonstrate that individual tattoos can be designated as works of fine art in Kant’s theory. Next, I shift my focus from individual works of fine art to examining what makes a discipline a fine art. I provide an analysis of the phrase "X is a fine art” and offer two novel views. First, the Inherence View, which posits that when we claim a discipline to be a fine art, we are claiming that the discipline inherently lends itself to the creation of fine art. Second, the Cultural Entrenchment View, which posits that when we claim that a discipline is a fine art, we are claiming that the discipline is culturally established to have as its intention the production of works of fine art, and as a result, most artists in the discipline hold this intention. I argue that these viewpoints are consistent with Kant's perspective and are more satisfactory accounts than two noteworthy alternatives. With these accounts in place, I then argue that tattooing as a discipline should be considered a fine art.

Central to de Duve’s re-reading of the Critique of Judgment is Kant’s idea of sensus communis, ultimately interpreted as the mere yet necessary idea that human beings are capable of living in peace with one another. De Duve pushes Kant’s skepticism to its limits by submitting the idea of sensus communis to various tests leading to questions such as: Do artists speak on behalf of all of us? Is art the transcendental ground of democracy? Or, Was Adorno right when he claimed that no poetry could be written after Auschwitz? Loaded with de Duve’s trademark blend of wit and erudition and written without jargon, these essays radically renew current approaches to some of the most burning issues raised by modern and contemporary art. They are indispensable reading for anyone with a deep interest in art, art history, or philosophical aesthetics.
