Book Imperial Beast Fables

Download or read book Imperial Beast Fables written by Kaori Nagai and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book coins the term ‘imperial beast fable’ to explore modern forms of human-animal relationships and their origins in the British Empire. Taking as a starting point the long nineteenth-century fascination with non-European beast fables, it examines literary reworkings of these fables, such as Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Books, in relation to the global politics of race, language, and species. The imperial beast fable figures variably as a key site where the nature and origins of mankind are hotly debated; an emerging space of conservation in which humans enclose animals to manage and control them; a cage in which an animal narrator talks to change its human jailors; and a vision of animal cosmopolitanism, in which a close kinship between humans and other animals is dreamt of. Written at the intersection of animal studies and postcolonial studies, this book proposes that the beast fable embodies the ideologies and values of the British Empire, while also covertly critiquing them. It therefore finds in the beast fable the possibility that the multitudinous animals it gives voice to might challenge the imperial networks which threaten their existence, both in the nineteenth century and today.

Book Sublime Voices

Download or read book Sublime Voices written by Christopher Bolton and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Since the 1950s, Abe Kōbō (1924–1993) has achieved an international reputation for his surreal or grotesque brand of avant-garde literature. From his early forays into science fiction to his more mature psychological novels and films, and finally the complicated experimental works produced near the end of his career, Abe weaves together a range of “voices”: the styles of science and the language of literary forms. In Abe’s oeuvre, this stylistic interplay links questions of language and subjectivity with issues of national identity and technological development in a way that ultimately aspires to become the catalyst for an artistic revolution. While recognizing the disruptions such a revolution might entail, Abe’s texts embrace these disjunctions as a way of realizing radical new possibilities beyond everyday experience and everyday values. By arguing that the crisis of identity and postwar anomie in Abe’s works is inseparable from the need to marshal these different scientific and literary voices, Christopher Bolton explores how this reconciliation of ideas and dialects is for Abe part of the process whereby texts and individuals form themselves—a search for identity that must take place at the level of the self and society at large."

Book ELEPHANT AND THE KANGAROO

Download or read book ELEPHANT AND THE KANGAROO written by T.H. WHITE. and published by Alien Ebooks. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Announcement by the Archangel Michael of the coming of a second flood brings into play all the theories, and their practice, of scientifically minded English Mr. White, as he sets about building an ark on an Irish farm. With his landlords, Mike and Mrs. O’Callaghan, and their ability to mishandle his plans, Mr. White encounters a series of cyclonic problems in attempting to carry out his projects:—the choice of animals, necessary cargo and the stupendous job of converting an old barn into an ark. There is the bitterly contemptuous attitude of the town, the strange misadventures—before and after the flood—and the promise the rainbow brings as they are picked up at sea." —Kirkus Reviews

Book The Frontier Within

Download or read book The Frontier Within written by Kōbō Abe and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abe Kobo (1924–1993) was one of Japan's greatest postwar writers, widely recognized for his imaginative science fiction and plays of the absurd. However, he also wrote theoretical criticism for which he is lesser known, merging literary, historical, and philosophical perspectives into keen reflections on the nature of creativity, the evolution of the human species, and an impressive range of other subjects. Abe Kobo tackled contemporary social issues and literary theory with the depth and facility of a visionary thinker. Featuring twelve essays from his prolific career—including "Poetry and Poets (Consciousness and the Unconscious)," written in 1944, and "The Frontier Within, Part II," written in 1969—this anthology introduces English-speaking readers to Abe Kobo as critic and intellectual for the first time. Demonstrating the importance of his theoretical work to a broader understanding of his fiction—and a richer portrait of Japan's postwar imagination—Richard F. Calichman provides an incisive introduction to Abe Kobo's achievements and situates his essays historically and intellectually.

Book An Explorer s Notebook

Download or read book An Explorer s Notebook written by Tim Flannery and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An invaluable collection of think pieces from a climate change expert and the author of the #1 international bestseller The Weather Makers. Tim Flannery is one of the world’s most influential scientists, a foremost expert on climate change credited with discovering more species than Charles Darwin. But Flannery didn’t come to his knowledge overnight. With its selection of exhilarating essays and articles written over the past twenty-five years, An Explorer’s Notebook charts the evolution of a young scientist doing fieldwork in remote locations to the major thinker who has changed the way we think about global warming. In over thirty pieces, Flannery writes about his journeys in the jungles of New Guinea and Indonesia, about the extraordinary people he met and the species he discovered. He writes about matters as wide-ranging as love, insects, population, water, and the stresses we put on the environment. He shows us how we can better predict our future by understanding the profound history of life on Earth. And he chronicles the seismic shift in the world’s attitude toward climate change. An Explorer’s Notebook is classic Flannery—wide-ranging, eye-opening science, conveyed with richly detailed storytelling. “Tim Flannery is in the league of all-time great explorers like Dr. David Livingstone.” —Sir David Attenborough
