Book excerpt: In 1862, a mere four years after becoming a state, the Dakota Uprising was a watershed event that would affect Minnesota at all levels. The tenacity and stoicism of the settlers and pioneers would be tested; but, so too, the very survival of the Eastern Dakota and their society, all were in the balance. The Dakota Uprising was one of the many chapters in the 'story' of the American Indian wars that occurred across the western United States up into the 1890's. However, the Dakota Uprising was largely overshadowed by a greater conflict that was occurring in the East – the Civil War. This book, this story, is an attempt to relay the events surrounding the Uprising – before, during, and immediately after. But, the author has tried to shift the focus of the story off of the battles slightly and to highlight the 'heroes' that emerged during the Uprising. The 'heroes' are well represented on both sides – settler and native. These 'heroes' in this story, both native and settler, are highlighted because we need to remember their deeds and the effort they put forth in trying to save themselves, their families, and their people. In our modern society, where we spend so much time keeping track of what is going on in exotic places around the globe, we sometimes forget the very important history that occurred right in our own backyards.

Book Language and Cultural Diversity in U S Schools

Download or read book Language and Cultural Diversity in U S Schools written by Terry A. Osborn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2005-08-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diversity is at the heart of today's education debates. Often, school policies and programs designed to encourage and embrace diversity are met with public ire and a deep misunderstanding of how diversity serves learning. This work explains how diversity is an essential element in classroom settings. As children from around the world continue to pour into U.S. classrooms, an understanding of cultural and linguistic diversity in its broadest sense moves to the foreground. In a post 9/11 world, the benefits of understanding diversity take on urgent meaning. The introdutory chapter, Participating in Democracy Means Participating in Schools, sets the tone for the discussion to follow. As the geographic backgrounds of immigrants becomes increasingly diverse, religion must be added to previous discussions of race, ethnicity, and language. Thus, the need for the public to understand how shifts in population affect schools, makes this work a vital resource for anyone concerned with education today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For three days in January, 1873, a severe snowstorm struck the Dakota Territory, Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota. People awoke on January 7 to an unusually warm winter's day with temperatures above freezing. Farmers and their families took advantage of the warmer temperatures, not knowing a severe storm was approaching. They brought grain to the mills, cut firewood in nearby forests, tended to their cattle, visited family or tended to other duties. The blizzard took the lives of hundreds of people in several states, including seventy in Minnesota. Twelve people died in Kandiyohi County. This book takes a detailed look at these 12 victims of the blizzard: who they were; where they lived; their journeys and deaths in the storm; and the families who mourned. All victims were immigrants and early pioneers to Minnesota"--Back cover.
