Book The Smile of a Ragpicker

Download or read book The Smile of a Ragpicker written by Paul Glynn and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following his acclaimed work, A Song for Nagasaki, in which Fr. Paul Glynn told the powerful story of Dr. Nagai, a Christian convert of remarkable courage and compassion who ministered to victims of the atomic bomb attack on his city, The Smile of a Ragpicker brings us the heroic story of Satoko Kitahara, a young, beautiful woman of wealth who gave up her riches and comfort to be among the ragpickers in the Tokyo slums. Motivated by her newfound faith in Christ, she plunged into the life of the poor, regardless of the consequences. As Satoko helped the poor with their material and spiritual needs, she also helped them to recover their self-respect and dignity. SatokoÕs story demonstrates how one personÕs life can affect so many others. Every day Satoko encountered Christ in some new and challenging way, calling the Church back to identification with the poor. Like Dr. Nagai, she expressed her faith through the sensitivity and beauty of her own Japanese culture. Satoko died a young woman, in dire poverty. Yet her death, mourned by many thousands, reflected her triumphant life of deep Christian faith and charity. This is a powerful story of reconciliation and healing, between people of different social, economic and religious backgrounds, inspired by a frail young woman of luminous faith. Book The Life and Thought of Kanzo Uchimura 1861 1930

Download or read book The Life and Thought of Kanzo Uchimura 1861 1930 written by Hiroshi Miura and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1996 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While staying in the United States in 1884 at the age of 23, Kanzo Uchimura (1861-1930) felt a sense of religious calling that led him to devote the rest of his life to Christian mission in Japan. His subsequent life and work earned him recognition as one of the most important Japanese thinkers, essayists, and theologians of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Uchimura claimed that Japan adopted Western civilization at the reopening of the country in the late nineteenth century but did not adopt Christianity itself -- the very cause, spirit, and life of Western civilization. This was the origin of all the difficulties Japan had been experiencing. There is no question that Uchimura believed Christianity would save Japan and the Japanese; the real question was "What kind of Christianity?" In his view Christian faith entails a radical dependence on the gospel; baptism, communion, and the other sacraments are not necessary. He also believed that God's truth can be revealed directly to each individual, so that an intermediary between God and people, such as a minister, priest, or pope, is not required. This argument led Uchimura to start the Mukyokai-shugi (Non-churchism), a denial of the institutional church. Miura here explores in depth this theme in Uchimura's thought as well as Uchimura's particular vision of Japan's mission to the world. This study not only offers Western readers new information about Kanzo Uchimura and the Japanese Non- church Movement; it also provides important insights into the way Christianity can be indigenized in a new culture, such as that of modern Japan.

Book Living for Jesus and Japan

Download or read book Living for Jesus and Japan written by Shibuya Hiroshi and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Uchimura Kanzo (1861 1930) was an independent, original, and thought-provoking pioneer of Christianity in modern Japan. His theological values were organically linked with his aspiration for living and practicing such evangelical ideas as prophetic existence, neighborly love, social justice, pacifism, patriotism, and internationalism in the sphere of public life. Uchimura's commitment to the interaction between religious thought and social life is apparent in his well-known epitaph: "I for Japan; Japan for the World; the World for Christ; and All for God." In this interdisciplinary, multi-angled approach to Uchimura Kanzo, the contributors shed light on the inner logic, meanings, and modes of interaction between the religious and social thought observable in Kanzo. Book Christian Converts and Social Protests in Meiji Japan

Download or read book Christian Converts and Social Protests in Meiji Japan written by Irwin Scheiner and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere has there been a discussion of the confusion necessarily generated by the rapidity of the change or of the agony created in the lives of many whose attitudes, expectations, and even success depended on the continuance of now abolished institutions. Historians have ignored the settled conditions of most samurai and instead concentrated on the study of the minority of activist samurai leaders who, with the backing of only a few Han (feudal domains) sought to overthrow the old order and whose success in doing so has made the study of the modernization of Japan the prime concern of historians. The history of the Meiji period may have been an overall political and industrial success story, but for a fuller understanding of the conditions of that success it is also necessary to understand "what it was really like" for the members of the old elite to be estranged from the proponents of revolution and what many members did to assure their own social and psychological position in a world they had not expected. In this book the author attempts to show that the impact of the Meiji Restoration destroyed the meaningfulness of the Confucian doctrine for these declasse samurai. Through Christianity, the samurai attempted to revive their status in society by finding a doctrine that offered a meaningful path to power. But in doing so, they had to accept a new theory of social relations. Ultimately, as the convert's understanding of society became totally informed by the Christian doctrine, they accepted a transcendent authority that brought them into conflict with society about them. Therefore, to understand the development of a Christian opposition in Meiji society we must begin with the conversion experience itself. [intro]

I became a Pentecostal Christian in 1984 - and Baptised into Pentecostal Church: Betel the 20th of September 1987 and baptized in Holy Spirit. To get Salvation from Jesus my King and Master is the biggest happening in my life and always will be. Know that the Bible is to 100% the truth - our bible not the catholic bible - but King James bible is God's words the sum of them to human kind and is Holy and the complete truth from beginning to end of the Holy Bible. THE SALVATION FROM JESUS CHRIST IS THE BIGGEST HAPPENING IN POSITIVE REMARK IN MY LIFE AS A WHOLE. I became baptized in Betel Pentecostal meeting 20th of September 1987. In 1981-1982 - 21 years old I went to a Christian Agricultural School to become a farmer - and I worked at a farm after that in 1981-1982 - it was hard work it was 18 hours a day - but after two months there at the farm I begun to work in the forrest - and at midsummer 1983 I was offer for a serious accident in the stairs I fell down while I was very tired after hard work in the forrest the stairs at my father's house - luckely my father was at home and he phoned after doctor and I was brought to the hospital it was very serious I was wounded - and I became clinically dead in 1983. I became clinically dead as I mention and met God and Jesus. And was of mercy given salvation and reborn on the 8th of July 1983 on Airport on my way Hospital where I should be transported to the department that healed damages I still had on the body - but had until then from the 24th of June been at a Main Hospital for operation - big operation it was and very difficult but very good doctors and they managed against all odds. - but I even became declared dead but was clinically dead - and was in the death - and met God and Jesus there among other things that did happen - saw my life as on a TV-Screen pass by at first the last that happened was that both God and Jesus were there and they said: "What shall we do with Nicholas?" It was said more then once. Then all of a sudden I was back to life in the hospital bed I am a Christian since 8th of July 1983. I do not believe that God and Jesus exists and rules - I do KNOW it. I have met them both personally in my spirit in contact with The Holy Spirit. THE SALVATION OF 8TH OF JULY 1983 THE GREATEST HAPPENING IN MY LIFE AS A WHOLE - BUT ALL HOLY SPIRITS WORK AND THEREBY JESUS WORK AND HIS IS ALL THE HONOR - HE WHO HAS ALL POWER IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH! This book is my personal experiences about Christianity as belief but in my experience Christianity is not a belief at all - it is even written Bible itself it is the case not needed belief in whether God and Jesus is the truth it is really easy doing to get to know that not believe at all - but know. But what then belief? It is what is told: Believe in Christ and his salvation doing on other word what he himself and Bible tells is truth every setting of it - that itself is really Christian belief - really no big case to know that God and Jesus do exist - not difficult doing at all it is - with setting I do end this spelling and this way the book itself do begin.

Book excerpt: First Level is the Gospel story carefully woven to speak to the Japanese heart. The loving relationship with the Creator - initiated, broken and restored - is emphasized throughout the material. From God's perspective, coming to know Him is 're-encountering', because He has always been our origin, and He created us with purpose. While we've tried to live our life with our own power apart from knowing God, He desired to bring us back to the relationship that we were originally meant to have with Him. All of our paths, even before we were born, are known by God. When we return to the Creator who made us, we are able to walk the path that the Creator originally intended for us to walk. Jesus is the Path to 'Re-encounter' God. This material is meant to be used in a relationship based Bible study, either one-on-one or in a group setting. During the study, Christians can share their personal experience of each of the five topics. Our hope is that through this study each Japanese person will re-encounter our Creator and develop a closer relationship with Him. This material was written from a Japanese perspective, and this English version is a translation of what is in the Japanese version. There may be some cultural and linguistic confusion for those who do not have much experience with Japanese culture. However, rather than reworking ideas in such a way as to make this material clear to English speakers, we have decided to merely translate the ideas so that you will know what the Japanese readers are seeing. We have included some cultural notes occasionally within the English text only, which are contained in parentheses and marked as "Translation Note: ".

Book excerpt: It's the greatest story never told- that of a boy who met Jesus and dared to ask him questions that have consumed mankind for more than 2,000 years. His name was Segatashya. He was a shepherd born into a penniless and illiterate pagan family in remote Rwanda. He never attended school, never saw a bible, and never set foot in a church. One summer day in 1982, while the 15-year-old was resting beneath a tree, Jesus Christ paid him a visit. Jesus asked the startled young man if he'd be willing to go on a mission to remind mankind how to live a life that leads to heaven. Segatashya accepted the assignment on one condition- that Jesus answer all his questions-and all the questions of those he met on his travels - about faith, religion, the purpose of life, and the nature of heaven and hell. Jesus agreed to the boy's terms, and Segatashya set off on what would become one of the most miraculous journeys in modern history. Written with grace, passion, and loving humour by Immaculée Ilibagiza, The Boy Who Met Jesus is certain to move you in profound ways.
