Book Journeys in the Canyon Lands of Utah and Arizona 1914 1916

Download or read book Journeys in the Canyon Lands of Utah and Arizona 1914 1916 written by George C. Fraser and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2017-12-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Corning Fraser, who lived in the days before automobile travel became a way of life, was an easterner who loved to vacation on horseback in the American Southwest. No mere tourist, he sought out the most remote and forbidding landscapes he could find: the seldom-visited country north of the Grand Canyon, the vast slickrock expanses of the Navajo Reservation, and sites such as Zion Canyon and Capitol Reef before they became national parks. An amateur geologist, Fraser penned his own memorable observations of the region’s landforms and jotted down engaging accounts of local ranchers, sheepherders, and villagers. Frederick H. Swanson has edited Fraser’s voluminous journals into a single volume covering three trips taken from 1914 to 1916. As Fraser wades the bone-chilling waters of the Zion Narrows, crosses the Grand Canyon in midsummer heat, and rides through the trackless forest of the Aquarius Plateau, he conveys impressions of the land that will fascinate any reader who wonders what the canyon country was like before it became a popular tourist destination—and one that will inform historians interested in early accounts of the region. Accompanied by a selection of photographs taken by Fraser and his fellow travelers, Journeys in the Canyon Lands brings to life the Southwest’s breathtaking backcountry on the brink of discovery.

The river runs south before turning west below Grand Lake, the largest natural lake in the state. After passing Kremmling it cuts a series of narrow canyons, including Gore, Glenwood, and De Beque. The Colorado emerges from the mountains at the Grand Valley, where it is joined by the Gunnison River before arcing northwest into desert Utah. Carving its way southwest across the Colorado Plateau, the Colorado forms Cataract Canyon and other gorges and receives its principal tributary, the Green River, before flowing into Lake Powell, a reservoir formed by the Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona nearly 200 miles (320 km) downstream. The Colorado passes Lee's Ferry in Arizona, the official dividing point of the Upper and Lower Colorado River Basins, before swinging south then west through the Grand Canyon. Book excerpt: Within Vermilion Cliffs National Monument there are exceptionally unique and seldom visited natural landscapes. The Wave is visited by tourist from around the world. As is the colorful and geological chaotic White Pockets. Buckskin slot canyon is the largest slot in the U.S. North Rim Grand Canyon is unique from the South Rim as it is not crowded. The western end, Tuweep, has the most dramatic view of the Colorado River.Kaibab Forest offers alternate views of the canyon that is really an extension of the national park's overlooks. Unlike Grand Canyon National Park trails, Kaibab Forest has a multitude of uncrowded hikes down to the river. Ancient Indian rock art (petroglyphs and pictographs) are abundant. The Arizona Strip is the most isolated area within continental U.S. almost void of human penetration. About 4,000 miles (6,436 km) of remote barren roads challenge exploration within an area that is slightly larger than the state of Massachusetts or one-half the size of Switzerland. Within that vast area is Lees Ferry Colorado River crossing. It is the history of this area from Mormon pioneers to gold seekers. Our book is a combination of driving, hiking, mountain-biking and other tours such as rafting and horseback riding. There are suggestions of what to see and do for each tour. Mile-By-Mile Location - Your exact location is known by using a meticulous identification of MPs (posts along the road indicating mileage) located at each mile (1.6 km) on every improved road. Where those MPs are not available, we use actual miles from a designated reference point. Where applicable, Global Positioning data (GPS) is supplied to complement walking tours in remote areas. Using this collection of information, you will always know your exact location. We are sure this book will make your vacation more memorable and successful.Table of Contents (Page number at end)Trip 1 - From St. George, Utah to Lee's Ferry, Arizona 6Tour 1-01 - Historic Lee's Ferry 20Tour 1-02 - Rachael's Pool & Bonelli Springs 42Tour 1-03 - Dominguez-Escalante Expedition. 51Tour 1-04 - Buffalo Ranch & Buck Farm Overlook 52Tour 1-05 - California Condors 54Tour 1-06 - Town of Fredonia 55Tour 1-07 - Tuweep Park and Toroweap Overlook from Fredonia 57Tour 1-08 - From Tuweep to St. George 69Tour 1-09 - Tuckup Canyon Hiking 71Tour 1-10 - Pipe Springs 75Tour 1-11 - Colorado City 78Trip 2 - Vermilion Cliffs National Monument Introduction 82Tour 2-1 - Paria Ranger Station and Camping 86Tour 2-2 - House Rock Valley Road (#700 & #1065) 88Tour 2-2-1 - Buckskin Gulch Trailhead 94Tour 2-2-1-A Buckskin Gulch Middle Trail 96Tour 2-2-2 - The Wave 1, 2 and 3 99Tour 2-2-3 - Paria Plateau's Historic Ranches 103” To Hancock Springs (Jacob's Pool) Trailhead 113” To Bonelli Springs and Ancient Indian Ruins 115Tour 2-2-4 - White Pocket Tour 116Trip 3 - From Jacob's Lake To Grand Canyon 118Tour 3-01 - North Rim Grand Canyon Park 123Trip 4 - Kaibab Forest, Overlooks & Tours 147Tour 4-01 - Fredonia to Kaibab Forest Tours 173Tour 4-02 - Jacobs Lake to Road #22 178Tour 4-03 - Snake Gulch & Slide Canyon 180Tour 4-04 - To Brow (Powell) Monument 181Tour 4-05 - To Jumpup Cabin & Trail 41 182Tour 4-06 - To Sowats, Indian Hollow, Crazy Jug and Monument Pt. 182Tour 4-07 - To Parissawampitts, & Timp Points Mountain Bike Trail 185Tour 4-08 - To Fire, Swamp and Sublime Overlooks 186Tour 4-09 - To Marble Pt., Saddle Mt. and Nankoweap Trailhead 188Trip 5 - Highway 89 from Paria Ranger Station to Kanab, UT. 191Tour 5-01 - Toadstool Formations 193Tour 5-02 - Paria Ghost Town 195Tour 5-03 - Town of Kanab and Local Tours 198Tour 5-04 - Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park 210Tour 5-05 - Moqui Cave 216Tour 5-06 - Best Friends Animal Sanctuary 216Trip 6 - Wupatki National Monument (Ancient Indian) & Sunset Crater 218

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woody wetlands constitute a relatively small but extremely important part of the landscape in the southwestern United States. These riparian habitats support more than one-third of the regionÕs vascular plant species, are home to a variety of wildlife, and provide essential havens for dozens of migratory animals. Because of their limited size and disproportionately high biological value, the goal of protecting wetland environments frequently takes priority over nearly all other habitat types. In The Ribbon of Green, hydrologists Robert H. Webb, and Stanley A. Leake and botanist Raymond M. Turner examine the factors that affect the stability of woody riparian vegetation, one of the largest components of riparian areas. Such factors include the diversion of surface water, flood control, and the excessive use of groundwater. Combining repeat photography with historical context and information on species composition, they document more than 140 years of change. Contrary to the common assumption of widespread losses of this type of ecosystem, the authors show that vegetation has increased on many river reaches as a result of flood control, favorable climatic conditions, and large winter floods that encourage ecosystem disturbance, germination, and the establishment of species in newly generated openings. Bringing well-documented and accessible insights to the ecological study of wetlands, this book will influence our perception of change in riparian ecosystems and how riparian restoration is practiced in the Southwest, and it will serve as an important reference in courses on plant ecology, riparian ecology, and ecosystem management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palaeohydrology is the study of changes in the waters of the Earth prior to continuous monitoring. Knowledge of these changes is important for the understanding of past and present environmental changes and of the form of the present-day environment. The evolution of the hydrological cycle in response to climatic change produces a chain of environmental and human consequences -- factors that are becoming more relevant as climate change is predicted. Evidence of past environmental changes may be used to validate models with which to predict future change -- thus the study of rates, mechanisms and processes of Late Quaternary hydrological changes is of critical importance. This volume is designed for all who are interested in the hydrological impacts of climatic change and the contribution that palaeohydrology can make to the study of these changes.
