Book Malawi s Lost Years 1964 1994

Download or read book Malawi s Lost Years 1964 1994 written by Mwakasungura, Kapote and published by Mzuni Press. This book was released on 2016-08-10 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malawi is a small and poorly known country, but the crimes committed against its people by the brutal dictatorship of Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda are a part of our shared human history. It is about what happens when governments turn state violence on their own people with impunity. The book gives voice to Malawians who were arbitrarily imprisoned, who fled for their lives into exile, or who suffered silently under the regime's state-sponsored terror from 1964 to 1994. These are not easy stories for the victims to tell and people in power do not want them to be made public. To add to the indignity endured by the regime's victims, Malawi's current leadership has been rehabilitating Banda's image and honouring him, despite well-documented reports of atrocities and abuse of human rights. Nevertheless, even unpleasant history must be openly faced, discussed and acknowledged to provide lessons for the future. The book helps redress this one-sided revision of Malawian history. Fifty years after independence, the Malawi people continue to suffer in absolute poverty and in greater numbers than ever, because the lessons of history from Malawi's lost years have not been learned.

I also appeal for a spirit of reconciliation and forgiveness amongst us all.' Kamuzu Banda is an epic play showing Kamuzu's return to Nyasaland, his subsequent imprisonment, his Gweru prison experience, the fall of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, the 1964 cabinet crisis, the 1971 MCP convention, the rise of dictatorship, the 1983 Mwanza murders, the fall of dictatorship, the landmark achievements in areas of education and agriculture and the exceptional foresight of Kamuzu's leadership.

Book Revolt of the Ministers

Download or read book Revolt of the Ministers written by Colin Baker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2001-03-23 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I certainly had very extreme views, very violent views... and I certainly did advocate... extreme methods.” So a leading Nyasaland nationalist characterised the struggle for independent Malawi, but Dr Hastings Banda, a highly respected medical doctor based for many years in London was invited back to Nyasaland to lead the movement to independent Malawi and the Malawi National Congress. Here was, or so it seemed, a loyal and progressive Government with pro-Western leadership – a final success in the story of British decolonisation. Yet within three months all but one of the cabinet ministers had resigned or were dismissed, former ministers fled the country including distinguished members of the independence movement. Even the pro-Congress Europeans feared for their lives. Colin Baker unravels this potentially disastrous episode in Malawi's history and in the story of decolonisation. He illuminates not only the immediate post-independence problems of Malawi, a newly independent African state, but charts the growth of Banda's autocracy. This detailed and revealing study reveals the problems inherent in the whole momentous story of Africa in independence and decolonisation.
