Download or read book The Songs of Max Reger written by Richard Mercier and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2008-04-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This significant volume is the first to present in detail the entire prolific vocal repertoire of the late-Romantic German composer Max Reger. The Songs of Max Reger: A Guide and Study begins with a brief introduction discussing the development of German Lied, then journeys through this creative composer's works for voice and piano. With many musical examples, Richard Mercier and Donald Nold present a survey and discussion of Reger's lifetime of song output. The book proceeds through the songs chronologically by opus number, discussing each individually. All entries include details pertinent to the song's particular poem, its musical setting, the date of musical composition, the vocal range required, and discussion of specific vocal and pianistic features. The text also provides the original German poem, word-for-word English translation of the German text, IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) pronunciation symbols for the German, and a prose version of the poetic text in English for better appreciation of the piece. An index and two appendixes complete this important reference, arranging the songs by title and poet and supplying information on vocal range, level of difficulty, and gender. Designed for the classical vocal music enthusiast and invaluable to the singer and vocal coach, this book, commemorating the 135th anniversary of the composer's birth, will also appeal to accompanists, Reger scholars, and lovers of German Lieder and German art and culture.

Book Hans Christian Andersen and Music

Download or read book Hans Christian Andersen and Music written by AnnaHarwell Celenza and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Christian Andersen was the most prominent Danish author of the nineteenth century. Now known primarily for his fairy tales, during his lifetime he was equally famous for his novels, travelogues, poetry, and stage works, and it was through these genres that he most often reflected on the world around him. With the bicentennial of Andersen's birth in 2005, there is still much about the writer that is not yet common knowledge. This book explores a single aspect of that void - his interest in and relationship to the musical culture of nineteenth-century Europe. Why look to Andersen for information about music? To begin, Andersen had a musical background. He enjoyed a brief career as an opera singer and dancer at the Royal Theater in Copenhagen, and in later years he went on to produce opera libretti for the Danish and German stage. Andersen was also an avid music devotee. He made thirty major European tours during his seventy years, and on each of these trips he regularly attended opera and concert performances, recording his impressions in a series of travel diaries. In short, Andersen was a well-informed listener, and as this book reveals, his reflections on the music of his age serve as valuable sources for the study of music reception in the nineteenth century. Over the course of his life, Andersen embraced and then later rejected performers such as Maria Malibran, Franz Liszt, and Ole Bull, and his interest in opera and instrumental music underwent a series of dramatic transformations. In his final years, Andersen promoted figures as disparate as Wagner and Mendelssohn, while strongly objecting to Brahms. Although such changes in taste might be interpreted as indiscriminate by modern-day readers, this study shows that such shifts in opinion were not contradictory, but rather quite logical given the social and cultural climate of the age.

Book excerpt: How did Austrian writers grapple with their country's problematic twentieth-century history? Nine scholars investigate how the complex role of the national past changed the content and context of Austria's literature. Contributions range from Klaus Zeyringer's aggressive argument for an authentically Austrian literature, to the late Harry Zohn's autobiographical insights of a transplanted Viennese. Probing essays examine the Liberal and the National-Socialist era writers in exile and in their roles as post-war social critics. Shadows of the Past also puts the authors themselves in the spotlight: A «mini-reader» of hard-hitting as well as humorous narrative texts complements the literary history that begins the volume. Written by Barbara Frischmuth, Elisabeth Reichart, and Erich Wolfgang Skwara, these six texts are accompanied by helpful introductions to each author. As a further aid for English-speaking readers, the original in German literary and critical texts are translated for the first time. Shadows of the Past allows students of European culture and comparative literature to experience a dramatic century in Austrian literature and history.

Book Marlen Haushofer Texte und Kontexte

Download or read book Marlen Haushofer Texte und Kontexte written by Andrea Capovilla and published by Frank & Timme GmbH. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
