Download or read book Kalmar Nyckel The Tall Ship of Delaware written by Samuel W. Heed, Esq. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Launched in Wilmington in 1997, Kalmar Nyckel--The Tall Ship of Delaware--is one of the region's great educational resources, a floating classroom and inspirational platform for a broad array of land-and sea-based programs. An accurate replica of the original Swedish naval vessel that launched the colony of New Sweden in the Delaware Valley in 1638, today's Kalmar Nyckel voyages over 2,000 nautical miles and reaches more than 30,000 students, passengers, and visitors a year. A photographer's dream wherever she goes, Kalmar Nyckel embodies America's maritime heritage and has become one of Delaware's defining treasures. Samuel W. Heed, Esq., is the senior historian and director of education at the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, where since 2008 he has been developing the programs, exhibits, articles, and documentaries that bring the Kalmar Nyckel story to life and give it meaning. Heed serves on a number of nonprofit boards, including the Council of American Maritime Museums. The Kalmar Nyckel Foundation archives provided the primary resources for this book.

Book A Man and His Ship

Download or read book A Man and His Ship written by Clinton Alfred Weslager and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many vessels braved the Atlantic bringing explorers, traders, & settlers to the New World - Columbus's NINA, PINTA, & SANTA MARIA - Henry Hudson's HALF MOON - Lord Baltimore's ARK & DOVE - William Penn's WELCOME - & numerous others. None played a more significant role in the history of the Middle Atlantic States than the KALMAR NYCKEL, although the name may be unfamiliar to many Americans. Meaning "the key of Kalmar" (Kalmar was a Swedish city in the Baltic), the KALMAR NYCKEL, commanded by Peter Minuit, made the first permanent European settlement in the Delaware River valley at present Wilmington in 1638. Dr. Weslager reveals that the KALMAR NYCKEL continued to bring colonists on three subsequent voyages, blazing a route to the Delaware estuary on the trade winds. New Sweden became a home not only for Swedes & Finns, but for immigrants from Germany, the Netherlands, the British Isles, Belgium, Poland - even Danes & Schleswig-Holsteiners. The author maintains that the KALMAR NYCKEL has not received its just due. He argues that the ship did more than transporting a handful of Scandinavians. It brought more people, & of differing cultural backgrounds, than the venerable MAYFLOWER, & it planted the seeds for three of the original thirteen colonies - Delaware, Pennsylvania, & New Jersey. Finally, the KALMAR NYCKEL heroically ended its career as a spy ship in the Swedish-Danish War. "Dr. Weslager is universally recognized as America's foremost historian on New Sweden...he cites information found in contemporary letters, journals, notorial records, & other primary sources many of which have been translated into English for the first time."--Peter S. Craig, SWEDISH COLONIAL NEWS.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilmingtonas Waterfront tells the story of what has happened along the Brandywine and Christina rivers in Wilmington. These two rivers encompass downtown Wilmington and have been the lifeblood of the city ever since they provided a pathway for its Swedish settlers. With their perpetual rise and fall of tide, ceaseless source of power, and never-ending supply of water, the rivers have seen the growth and decline of industry, nurture and neglect by government, and respect and rejection by residents. In 1979 and 1980, the authors visited every inch of both sides of the rivers, taking photographs, making notes, and doing historical and environmental research. Their efforts resulted in Project R.O.W. (Reclaim Our Waterfront), a detailed report funded by a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In this book, Priscilla M. Thompson and Sally OaByrne invite you to join them on a pictorial tour of Wilmingtonas waterfront. Through their collection of photographs, etchings, and lithographs showing waterfront recreation and industries, you will discover shipbuilding companies, steamboat excursions, parks, waterworks, bridge dedications, and all the landmarks and activities that are a part of the Wilmington waterfrontas past.

Book An American Family

Download or read book An American Family written by Ralph F. Warner and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An American Family is about the Warner family of Philadelphia's Blockley Township. R. David Warner Sr., the author, is qualified to write this book because he and his father are the twelfth and thirteenth generation of a family which settled on the shores of the Schuylkill River five years before William Penn laid out the city. Before his death in 1992, the author's father wrote a series of letters containing the stories told to him as a child in the early twentieth century. He researched the public records of both the Historical Societies and the Quaker Meetinghouse to build upon the actual accounts of his family members. He spent the last twenty years of his life collecting this historical information. In the mid-nineteenth century, the author's great-grandfather began building on the names and facts about family members. The information he gathered was also used to write this book. Actual letters written from the foxholes of the civil war are typical of the documents used to complete this book. Our past can only be retrieved from what we remember and from the historical records that have been kept. Without memories and without records, we have no personal history!
