The night of the Silent Dinner, when Athens placates the spirits of the dead, passes with a creeping mist accompanied by eerie portents and a strange disappearance. Stephanos and his teacher, the philosopher Aristotle, are about to be drawn into solving the perplexing abduction case of Anthia, the heiress of a prominent silver merchant. All that is known is that the abductor and the heiress are on the road to Delphi and its ancient oracle—whose help may be needed when a murder complicates the case in this follow-up to the “eminently enjoyable” Aristotle Detective (Colin Dexter, author of the Inspector Morse Mysteries). “Why did no one think of this before?”—The Times (UK)

Book Ascending and descending the Acropolis

Book excerpt: Ascending and Descending the Acropolis - Mobility in Athenian Religion provides new perspectives on religious mobilities within the geographically limited region of Attica in Greece from the Late Bronze Age to the second century AD. Attica is a particularly fruitful region to study these forms of mobility, as it provides rich evidence across a range of material and textual sources for a variety of different mobile situations - both inside the city of Athens itself (such as on and circumnavigating the Acropolis) and to sanctuaries in its hinterland (for example, those of Demeter and Kore at Eleusis and that of Artemis at Brauron), as well to as more distant sanctuaries, such as Delphi.

Book The Medieval Greek Romance

Download or read book The Medieval Greek Romance written by Roderick Beaton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published by CUP in 1989, The Medieval Greek Romance provides basic information for the non-specialist about Greek fiction during the period 1071-1453, as well as proposing new solutions to problems that have vexed previous generations of scholars. Roderick Beaton applies sophisticated methods of literary analysis to the material, and the bridges of the artificial gap which has separated `Byzantine'literature, in a form of ancient Greek as both homogenous and of a high level of literary sophistication. Throughout, consideration is given to relations and interconnections with similar literature in western Europe. As most of the texts discussed are not available in English translation, the argument is illustrated by lucid plot summaries and extensive quotation (accompanied by literal English renderings). For this edition, The Medieval Greek Romance has been revised throughout and expanded with the addition of an `Afterword' which assesses and responds to recent work on the subject.

Book Evolution of Water Supply Through the Millennia

Download or read book Evolution of Water Supply Through the Millennia written by Andreas N. Angelakis and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-14 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution of Water Supply Through the Millennia presents the major achievements in the scientific fields of water supply technologies and management throughout the millennia. It provides valuable insights into ancient water supply technologies with their apparent characteristics of durability, adaptability to the environment, and sustainability. A comparison of the water technological developments in several civilizations is undertaken. These technologies are the underpinning of modern achievements in water engineering and management practices. It is the best proof that “the past is the key for the future.” Rapid technological progress in the twentieth century created a disregard for past water technologies that were considered to be far behind the present ones. There are a great deal of unresolved problems related to the management principles, such as the decentralization of the processes, the durability of the water projects, the cost effectiveness, and sustainability issues such as protection from floods and droughts. In the developing world, such problems were intensified to an unprecedented degree. Moreover, new problems have arisen such as the contamination of surface and groundwater. Naturally, intensification of unresolved problems led societies to revisit the past and to reinvestigate the successful past achievements. To their surprise, those who attempted this retrospect, based on archaeological, historical, and technical evidence were impressed by two things: the similarity of principles with present ones and the advanced level of water engineering and management practices. Evolution of Water Supply Through the Millennia is intended for engineers in water resources companies, hydraulic design companies, and water Institutes. It can be used for all courses related to water resources. Authors: Andreas N. Angelakis, Institute of Iraklion, National Foundation for Agricultural Research (N.AG.RE.F.), Greece, Larry W. Mays, School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, Arizona State University, USA, Demetris Koutsoyiannis, School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Greece, Nikos Manassis, School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, Greece.

Book Pausanias Periegetes II

    Book Details:
  • Author : W Kendrick Pritchett
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2023-08-21
  • ISBN : 900467358X
  • Pages : 363 pages

Download or read book Pausanias Periegetes II written by W Kendrick Pritchett and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-21 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's second volume on Pausanias focuses on a collection of over fifty examples where Pausanias is alleged by modern scholars to have made errors in his topographical descriptions of sites and monuments, debating the pros and cons. He vindicates the Periegetes in most cases, finding his most serious error is duplicated in Strabo and Pliny. Tables are offered of figures where distances are given in stades, leading to the observation that various scholars independently hypothesize that alphabetical numerals, easily corruptable, were used at some stage in the transmission of the text. Following his earlier study of wooden cult statues, called xoana, the author collects examples of other statues of wood where the word is not used, noting that wooden statues of athletes are attested as early as 544 BC. Tables of bronze statues are also presented, leading to the conclusion that, although favored by the Romans as booty in war, many bronzes by famous artists still remained in Greece in the second century of our era. A third chapter is devoted to Pausanias' description of ruins, including towns and temples. The Periegete reported more ruins in Arkadia than in any other province. A final chapter collects Pausanias' record of sixty-one festivals and panegyreis. This book will be of interest to topographers, art-historians, and students of Greek religion.

Book The Sacred Law of Andania

Download or read book The Sacred Law of Andania written by Laura Gawlinski and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-12-23 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inscribed text referred to as the sacred law of Andania contains almost 200 lines of regulations about a mystery festival and the sanctuary in which it took place. Although it concerns one annual festival in Messenia, it imparts information relevant to the general nature of sanctuary activity and the issues that were important in the routine management of cult. This book contributes to the recent shift in scholarship that has sought to view sanctuaries as more than simply settings for temples, but as locations created and affected by people's various needs, activities, and agendas. This examination of the inscription includes a new and accurate edition of its text with full critical apparatus, an English translation, and copious images of the stone. The accompanying introduction and commentary incorporate literary and epigraphical comparanda and on-site topographical research to present a holistic view of the cultic regulations in their historical and geographical context.

Book A Brief Guide to the Greek Myths

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book leads the reader through these vibrant stories, from the origins of the gods through to the homecomings of the Trojan heroes. In addition to the tales, the book explains key issues arising from the narratives, and discusses the myths and their wider relevance. This long-overdue book crystallises three key areas of interest: the nature of the tales; the stories themselves; and how they have and might be interpreted. For the first time, it brings together aspects of Greek mythology only usually available in disparate forms - namely children's books and academic works. There will be much here that is interesting, surprising, and strange as well as familiar. Experts and non-experts, adults, students and schoolchildren alike will gain entertainment and insight from this fascinating and important volume.
