  • ISBN : 1642498025

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing a path across an array of human phenomenology, Respiring Ruin is a collection of poems that examine and convey a series of reflections articulating the nature of our existence unabashedly and unapologetically. The intent is to shed some light on the derelict forms of relationships between people and nature. It questions the quality of life we lead with brief appreciation for the simple joys and little pleasures life holds. The core idea is embodied within the book’s title, which is the ambitious communication of an almost cynical, yet awe-inspiring notion that we as humans are biological architectures that are a compromise between fantasy and decadence. Refraining from the usual title-poem caricature, Respiring Ruin is dialogue poetry, where two people explore not just their own but each other’s thoughts, addressing the masculine and feminine perspectives. Hence, it follows a ‘He-She narrative,’ the “He” written by Pragadish Kirubakaran and “She” by Nikitha Sathi. Interspersed within the book are illustrations which accompany every piece, ensuring you, the reader, a literary and visual treat.

Book The Many Lives of a Rajput Queen

Download or read book The Many Lives of a Rajput Queen written by Ramya Sreenivasan and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2015-08-03 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2009 Ananda Kentish Coomaraswamy Book Prize, sponsored by the Association for Asian Studies The medieval Rajput queen Padmini - believed to have been pursued by Alauddin Khalji, the Sultan of Delhi - has been the focus of numerous South Asian narratives, ranging from a Sufi mystical romance in the sixteenth century to nationalist histories in the late nineteenth century. The Many Lives of a Rajput Queen explores how early modern regional elites, caste groups, and mystical and monastic communities shaped their distinctive versions of the past through the repeated refashioning of the legend of Padmini. Ramya Sreenivasan investigates these legends and traces their subsequent appropriation by colonial administrators and nationalist intellectuals, for varying different political ends. Using Padmini as a means of illustrating the power of gender norms in constructing heroic memory, she shows how such narratives about virtuous women changed as they circulated across particular communities in South Asia between the sixteenth and early twentieth centuries. This book will interest historians of memory, gender, community, culture, and historywriting in South Asia. Illustrating how enduring legends emerged out of particular precolonial repositories of "tradition," the book also addresses the nature of colonial transitions and precolonial historical consciousness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Image Trap analyses the phenomenon of M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), the legendary film star-cum-politician of Tamil Nadu, as a modern-day political myth. This book offers fascinating details about the extent to which MGR was successful in creating a stereotypical cinematic persona, and what repercussions it had on Tamil Nadu. Delineating the cultural elements that were meticulously mobilised to constitute MGR’s on-screen image, it analyses the popularity he enjoyed among the poor whose interests he constantly violated. This is done by means of what Pandian termed as constructed biographies which are popular narratives that ingeniously present the cinematic as real. It brings out the interface and interplay between the media and political processes. A blend of essay writing, political rhetoric and scholarship, the book features the complete filmography of MGR and is a must for understanding the contemporary politics of the state.
